Their Levees VS Our Levees

Here's how the British hold back the waters from flooding London:

And the Dutch solution to protecting an entire nation that mostly rests below sea level:

The Italians are defending their city on the sea, Venice:

And the richest, most powerful and technologically advanced nation on earth.

Hey, it takes a lot of money to keep corrupt politicians corrupt and run an illegal and immoral war .........

5. now, now... we have to get our priorities straight...
first, tax cuts for the rich.
then maybe we can patch-up those levees if there's anything left.

6. I've seen these "levees" in each of these cities/countries-they are amazin
I used to live in Europe and traveled a lot. I had a boyfriend who was an engineer and for "fun" he loved to travel and visit these places while we were there. At first I thought "yawn" but then when he started pointing out the technology to me, I actually was intriqued and marveled at what Engineering feats were being dreamt of and implemented. In particular, I thought that what the Dutch did with not just the "dikes" and "levees" but their massive projects for land-reclamation from the sea (Holland is basically at sea level - the entire country!).

I had never seen the New Orleans Levees until after Katrina hit...then as I hear more and more about how they have known of the risks of Gulf Waters in Hurricanes, I can only shake my head in disbelief at what our so-called "engineers" and tax dollars built for the city of New Orleans.

Pictures say a 1000 words, don't they? :eyes:

7. Mary Landrieu
Is meeting with the Dutch to determine what and how to rebuilt NOLA's defenses.

When the Dutch flooded out back in the 50's they came to LSU for help.Isn't that ironic?

10. Adviser: No federal promise on La. levees

Adviser: No federal promise on La. levees

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The White House's top hurricane-relief adviser said Tuesday he has not decided whether the federal government should pay to make New Orleans' levees stronger than they were before Katrina.

Donald Powell declined to say how long it would take before a decision is made.

Katrin, a Category 3 storm, surged through the city's levees at numerous points when it struck three months ago, killing more than 1,000 people.

Powell said he is gathering information from local and state officials and will eventually recommend to the Bush administration whether the levees should be strengthened to protect against more powerful Category 4 or Category 5 storms.

http://www.nola.com/newsflash/louisiana/index.ssf?/base/news-21/1133216082119040.xml&storylist=louisiana

U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu said Monday she is prepared to prevent the U.S. Senate from taking Christmas and New Year's break until Washington has approved money to pay for flood protection improvements along Louisiana's coast.

"We may be getting to a point where we've just got to raise the level of attention" on Louisiana's critical flood control needs, Landrieu said Monday while touring damaged neighborhoods here with Boudewijn J. van Eenennaam, the Dutch ambassador to the United States. "We've got to get people down here to walk through these neighborhoods, to see these houses, to see the stretch of devastation along the whole Gulf Coast."

Van Eenennaam said Dutch engineers agree southeastern Louisiana could be rebuilt and well protected, much as the Netherlands was after widespread flooding in 1953. It's a matter whether the federal government is willing to pay to build and properly maintain modern flood-control structures.

He also noted that what may seem like a hefty price to build a state-of-the-art flood control system can in fact be a rather small investment if it protects a densely populated area where industry exists. Holland's entire flood-control system cost about $18 billion in current dollars, plus about $500 million per year for maintenance, which amounted to an investment of "less than pennies on the dollar" returned from economic activity in flood-protected parts of that country, he said.

13. Want some interesting reading

Go back to this summer and find the senate debate on the amendment to the energy bill that would have let the oil producing Gulf states get more of the tax dollars the oil revenue creates. Landrieu and Lott were running the debate and they were all over the administration over levees, wetlands and storm prep. Pretty scary when they are talking with each other about what could happen to their hometowns (New Orleans and Pascagoula) in a major hurricane. The amendment was of course defeated mainly along party lines with only Gulf state republicans voting for it.

23. well, there stands our infrastructure...
as previous said above, the only thing worth investing in for conservatives is apparently the military, to send on wild goose chases and defend our junta's business interests.

we have become a shadow of any former glory we had.
