Gulf Coast (Mississippi) Still in Ruins 3 Months After Katrina

Gulf Coast Still in Ruins 3 Months After Katrina

GULFPORT, Miss., Nov. 30, 2005 — For more than 80 miles along Mississippi's coast, the devastation is still stunning three months after Katrina hit. Millions of tons of debris have been hauled away, but little has been rebuilt.

Large sections are still off limits, thousands of people are living in trailers or tents, and in Waveland, the medical clinic is a tent and the waiting room is a school bus.

"Mississippi continues to be forgotten, yet Mississippi has the highest need," said volunteer Elizabeth Gallup. "Mississippi is now a third world country."

While most of the schools have reopened, at Waveland Elementary School, only 37 percent of the kids have returned. Those in attendance get special counseling to help them cope.

This story ran on ABC's World News this evening. It is odd to watch the network news and have your community, your corner of the United States of America, the greatest nation in the world, referred to as a third world country. It is odd, but it is true.

On a personal note, I know the police officer interviewed in this story. He went to high school with my brother and we have always referred to him as our adopted brother. I've celebrated birthdays with his family and he has been at so many of our family functions. He serves on the same police force as my brother. Like me, my brother lost all he and his family had to Katrina.

We are trying to rebuild, but we need your help. Don't let our nation forget us.

Listen to Congressman Gene Taylor's plea on the floor of the House. It will inspire you and it will help you appreciate the battle and why we need your help. http://www.leftandrightfight.com/genetaylor.wmv

Please, don't let them forget us. :-(

...the good news is that, I'm trying to start a Hurricane Victims Forum, click this link:

The bad news is, I've only gotten 3 interested responses.

If you know anyone else from the effected area, tell them to give the thread a positive kick too.

but the problem is, we have to keep this front page.

Do you see how threads about Katrina are ignored here? Just imagine how the issues are ignored in congress. We have to impress upon our fellow DUers that this is an issue that requires their attention.

I'm not asking for money, I'm asking that folks here let their congress critters know that the 3rd World Nation that is the Gulf Coast requires the attention of the government.

citizens didn't vote red. And ever if we were all red, we don't deserve to be neglected and I'm not asking for a dime from you. I am asking that you do something more than pontificate and I told you so, I'm asking that you let your congress critters know you expect them to help us out, that you expect them to help out your fellow Americans. I'd do it for you even if you voted red.

Watch the Taylor video that I linked in the OP - it might inspired you - I hope something inspires you because your attitude that I am toast is rather pathetic.

I am not toast and I won't let the rest of my neighbors be toast.

Just because someone lives around conservatives does not mean they should be treated like underclass citizens. It is comments like these that make me realize that people just don't understand the connectedness of us all. Aftermath of these hurricanes is affecting us all, economically, emotionally. People are being laid off all over, many people in the gulf coast states are not able to make money as many jobs there are gone, more and more in need of assistance, what is your problem?

7. It's an outrage. Haley Barbour is one fat useless sack of shit.
Funny how he got things done as a lobbyist; now as a republican governor he's accomplishing nothing. But it's the same in Florida; Pensacola and Pensacola Beach are still heavily damaged from Ivan- Sept. 2004. My grandmother will not get to live in Waveland again. I don't know if I will ever go back. I just want to move back to California ASAP - with rising oceans and temperatures it seems like folly to live along the gulf. Hope you're doing well - I know what the deal is in MS and it is outrageous. Gene Taylor does rock - hope his district isn't stolen via diebold.

10. That's the best key "memo" point to make to the US Public!
You said it...

All of us, should say everytime to people, to letters to the Newspapers etc. when talking about Iraq:

"How can the the Bush Administration and US help rebuild Iraq when they can't even rebuild our own country after Hurricane Katrina?"

I think that point needs to be hammered home, again and again and again every time the issue comes up...

28. We will be back, but we must let the rest of the nation know of our
battles and our on going efforts. Three (3) months later and folks are still living in tents and shelters or hotel rooms?

Right now the greatest crime that is being perpetrated against the Coast citizens and ALL U.S. taxpayers is the no bid Bechtel contract with FEMA. It is a joke. There is no coordination or organization. Thousands of trailers sit in lots waiting to be delivered to those that lost their homes. The trailers that have been delivered are full of defects and are in need of repairs but the subcontractors that Becthel has working for them relative to the maintenance don't know their ass from a hole in the ground.

The wasted efforts of this joke we call FEMA is not only hampering folks attempts to live and rebuild, it is wasting millions of tax dollars and is a prime example of the republican good ole boy buddy system. They don't care about the waste of our tax dollars, they just care which one of their buddies gets to line his pockets.

See Gene Taylor's speech, you will be inspired.

"How can the the Bush Administration and US help rebuild Iraq when they can't even rebuild our own country after Hurricane Katrina?"

If we weren't fighting an illegal and immoral war, if we brought our troops home, we could direct the money we are spending in Iraq to the third world regions of our nation.

It's a no brainer - stop the killing, stop funding the killing and spend that money to rebuild and rejuvenate our nation.

I was thinking of some way to bring attention to it. Thanks Merh.

I am planning to head back down there at some point in time. I just want to be somewhat prepared and self-sufficient. I am trying to locate a small camper/trailer to bring with me. I need to be with my kids and I need to be a part of the rebuilding process. I just had to get away for a while to regroup.

I try to check the Sun-Herald website daily to try to keep up with what's going on.

My son got a job laying concrete restoring curbs on Hwy 90. He's going to keep a lookout for some place I could park a camper and plug in somewhere.

I hope you are doing okay. What things are you having problems getting down there?

government the media censored the news that the same crises that were bringing Louisiana to it's knees were happening in Mississippi.

This has made me so DAMNED angry and so DAMNED sad from the beginning. I've been screaming, "What about Mississippi?!!??" for MONTHS to everyone who's whipped out that idiotic "corrupt Louisiana" argument.

Mississippi has been SACRIFICED; doomed to being virtually ignored by the American public in an effort to bolster Louisiana's reputation as the lone spot of trouble in FEMAs disastrous wake.

The federal government AND the media have betrayed BOTH states to save Shrubya's sorry ass.

I'm not from the US and I'm OUTRAGED! How unbelievable that especially at Christmas Time, these stories aren't all over the news. It's utterly pathetic what this government is NOT DOING. Conservative governments are cruel and selfish. It is beyond words..here I am thinking, what can I do to help. I've donated already (a few times)..but of course you wonder who's stealing that too these days!!! I feel HELPLESS.

Can I mail supplies to any one family..or something...can't that be coordinated on CNN...can we not have an "Adopt a Family Program" on the National Media for every damn family affected by the hurricanes - list them on the internet - sponsor or adopt them just as I am currently doing for a child in Uganda - now didn't that sound amazing considering we are talking about the USA!. It won't give them homes, but then again, some of the wealthy may figure out a way to give big..I'm at a loss. What a useless piece of shit government you have. This is more than a rant but

32. Haven't watched the video yet
I just wanted to say that I think about the folks down in the Gulf every day, especially the DUers who have been affected. You all are some strong beautiful people.

I went through the flooding from the remnants of Hurricane Ivan last year in the Upper Ohio Valley and my home was pretty seriously damaged. I filled out an online form at my Mom's house, had a FEMA guy inspecting my house within 3 days and a check in my bank for emergency repairs 3 days after that. It was an election year and they took care of us because they needed OH and WV votes, and knew they wouldn't get them from angry people who were suffering. I stressed out so much over the damage and the magnitude of what I personally would have to do to make my home liveable again. Never, not once, did I ever have to forage for food or water, or a blanket, or medicines, or a hot shower. My kids never went hungry and they never had to eat from a Red Cross or Salvation Army mobile kitchen. We never went for days without a drink of water. We never saw or smelled a dead body rotting in the sun. I never had to live in a FEMA trailer home or a tent. I'm one of just a few thousand who were affected then.

These people in the Gulf, hundreds of thousands of them, are suffering. They are the walking definition of hardship. Very few stores operating, no homes to save, no homes to buy or rent. No jobs. Lost family members. Bodies unidentified. They're living in tents in December. This wasn't a big election year and Brownie did not do a heck of a job. I don't care if they were Republicans or Democrats. Nobody deserves what the federal government has done to them. I'll never forget what happened.

Posting through the tears....

39. Oh, they are getting the stores opened.
Don't you know that shopping is key to returning our lives to normalcy?

Corporate America will profit from Katrina - the people will suffer and be foresaken.

Walmart has emptied its warehouses of items that did not sale (even on the clearance racks) from years gone by and have put them on the shelves in their Gulf Coast stores. I mean, afer all, we lost everything so we need the Walmarts and the Lowes. And for many, their only joy is found in shopping and trying to replace all that was lost.

TODAY is a day for me to write another round of letters to senators and reps to rebuild and support our country's people in the Gulf.

Another nomination to keep this thread up, for more letters and phone calls from DUers!!!

We've gotta show that we've got the backs of Katrina survivors, and get congress to put rebuilding on the FRONT BURNER.

we in louisiana and mississippi can only do so much, our senators and representatives already know there is a problem

we need to have people in the other 48 states contact their senators and congresscritter and let them know that rebuilding the gulf coast is a priority for you

phone calls and faxes are probably best but snail mail and even email or leaving comments in the forms some senators have on their websites can't be a bad idea

thank you

86. agreed donor fatique is no excuse
even those here who have no money can send an email or a 37 cent snail mail letter to their senior senator, a postcard is even cheaper than a letter and goes thru the anthrax screening process faster

folks, think abt sending a xmas card or xmas postcard to at least yr senior senator saying in yr own words that you think it is more important to rebuild the coast than to continue w. huge tax cuts to the wealthiest and esp. w. tax cuts to dead people (the estate tax!), working people need to be given more consideration for assistance than people who just inherit some $$$

41. "Regular Joe" Scarborough keeping it on the air though
I never thought I'd be saying nice things about Joe Scarborough. But he has been a strong voice (on MSNBC, at least) for the victims of Katrina. He has also been outspoken on the utter failure of the * administration to do ANYTHING in the wake of Katrina. His show last night was from Biloxi, I believe, and he spoke strongly on behalf of Waveland, Bay St. Louis, and the rest of the Mississippi coast residents.

While I usually disagree with him, on this one I gotta say, "Way to go, Joe."

107. Assisting Katrina's victims doesn't benefit */GOP politically
Therefore, no meaningful actions on their part. The GOP will continue to win the affected gulf coast states regardless of whether he pulls out all the stops or does absolutely nothing. On a national level, the expectation is that the populace will forget about Katrina with the passage of time, and that it will have no long term impact (except to the victims). That strategy enables the GOP to focus on their higher priorities, such as engaging in unprovoked wars, shifting the tax burden to lower incomes, milking Christmas for all it's worth, and keeping the minimum wage below the poverty level, to name but a few.

48. A kick and a rant for "...My bell"
Isn't it convenient ? Control the media... Control the world.

It is a TRAGEDY that we have left Mississippi behind.

Just... yesterdays News.

Hell, we'll just put a big Yellow Crime Ribbon around the state ...don't let anybody in....We'lll all forget about it as we go to the mall and consume those great bargains this holiday season.

Remember Indonesia? No telathons today. ...just not conducive to the new "Marketing Plan" ... So say The Admins. new Publicity folks.

PURE BULLSHIT!!

We can spend HOW many Billions of Dollars on other countries other then our own, Making Private contractors rich beyond their wildest dreams... and yet....We have a complete inability to bring people together in our own country.

Where is the compassion? Where is the effort? WHERE IS THE LEADERSHIP?

What of the the spirit of the WPA...

On May 6, 1935, the Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.) was created to help provide economic relief to the citizens of the United States who were suffering through the Great Depression.

Give Mississippi a 200,000 people with 400 000 hands....more then that have been displaced in this rebuttal from nature against industry, and they WILL fix it themselves.

....NAH.... lets just give it all to KBR ...they can subcontract it out.. pay minimum wage... put in some waterfront Condos... keep that false economy goin' for another couple months...You betcha.

...way too busy covering your ass.

Bless ya merh... Be of good cheer.

53. Even the media here is controlled, btmlndfrmr.
The local newspaper will not report on the insurance companies failure to honor our insurance policies. Oh, they report that the insurance commissioner will be mediating and investigating the refusal to pay claims and they will report that folks are having troubles because claims are being denied, but they refuse to investigate the blanket policy adopted by all of the corporations that all damage was due to storm surge and is not covered under the average home owner policies.

They report that all is happy, that we are returning to normalcy as they encourage citizens to go out and shop, our admin's answer to everything, go shopping. They report of folks in tents, but they haven't investigated just how incompetent FEMA and its subcontracters really are. I had 7 men in my yard yesterday for 3 hours to repair a sewer line and to properly tie down my trailer. They would not have been there if I hadn't called Congressman Taylor's office and raised hell that after 5 weeks, my trailer still had the initial maintenance issues. They wouldn't have fixed my sewer line if I had listened to them when they first came on my property. When they looked at the line they told me I had to hire a plumber. I told them the Bechtel folks had caused the damage to my line when they intially installed the trailer and they were responsible for fixing it. I knew to stand up to them and to demand they fix what FEMA is required to fix. Imagine those who don't know what they have a right to demand of FEMA.

Yes, please give us the resources and we will fix it ourselves. Give us the support and the materials and we will rebuild. But for the sake of the efforts, help us demand that congress get a handle on the misuse of the federal funds allocated and that the incompetence of FEMA be corrected.

We will rebuild, it will take time.

Thank you btmlndfrmr, I try to remember your words "be of good cheer" and your posting in this thread and adding your insights and your support helps me be of good cheer.

It's inefficiency ... If you hand a couple hundred thousand displaced workers with nothing to do ... can you imagine a better way for them to earn a living by volunteering to revitalize the place where they have a history... where they reside... the state they call home?

They would NEVER forget the contribution they made.

If this sort of thing happened In Wisconsin ... I'd be right there.

52. We don't need to ask the citizens to give - listen to Taylor's
speech on the floor found at the link I provided. We need to increase taxes -- no more tax cuts for the wealthy, those that can and should be paying taxes must start paying taxes. No more loopholes, no more breaks.

Generic Other, you have given of your times and talents to help me and I am eternally grateful. It is hard to ask people to keep giving, they have their own financial issues.

It isn't too much to ask that folks take the time to write to their congressmen critters and ask that the government actually pay attention the needs of the citizens of Mississippi and Louisiana and Alabama. How sad is it that we have third world conditions in our own homeland. The no bid contracts to Bechtel and the other friends of the administration should be investigated. The incompetence is common place and frustrating for those of us that have to deal with FEMA/Bechtel. The misuse of federal funds is a crime, I can give you specific instances and have told my congressman that I will testify before congress if need be. I am strong, I have my wits and my health. Imagine those not as fortunate or as pig headed as I am, imagine how they are not having their needs met because they don't know they have the right to demand attention.

Yes, it would be nice if folks could find it in their hearts to keep giving, but more importantly, it is essential that congress gets a grip on the situation now. The misuse of federal funds, the abuse of the good ole boy system is not just harming those of us in Mississippi, it has an adverse effect on the rest of the nation.

Again, Generic Other, thank you for your support and for your caring.

I'll fight for myself here, I am hard headed enough to not let them stop me, but what about others who don't have the constitution I have? What about the elderly, the illiterate, the disabled, the frightened? I'm not that strong emotionally thanks to the storm, but I am stronger than many and I won't take the time for PTSD to stop me, I can't afford to. Many are paralyzed by their fears, their losses, the denials and the apathy of the corporations and the nation.

101. But you see, fighting for the Gulf Coast,
fighting for the survivors of Katrina and Wilma is part of the fight for our nation. It is a simple/stupid concept in my book. Get out of Iraq, stop wasting tax dollars and lives on foreign soil and put the money spent on the war and the bodies fighting in that war to work at home, on our shores, rebuilding our beloved nation.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out how all this ties together. Bring our 4000 national guards members how to rebuild Mississippi and stop killing them or asking them to kill in Iraq.

91. See the map of the City of Biloxi (my city) at the link below.
the red dots are destroyed houses and structures that were totally destroyed. One of those red dots is mine and my house was not in the 100 year flood plan.

Approximately 5000 structures were destroyed out of the 25,000 pre-storm structures that existed in the city of Biloxi. Thousands more were not destroyed like mine and the other 4999, they were severly damaged and require a lot to rebuild or to make them habitable. Imagine the mold, imagine the contaiminents from the sewage and the pollution. Imagine a gutted house that stands, but has no walls or only a 2nd story and the continued deterioration of that structure as the owner awaits the insurance companies decision of loans from the SBA.

Imagine the worse and you haven't come close.

If you look southwest of the red legend reference, about 4 inches south of that red box, you can see a penisula with streets and lots of red dots. That is my neighborhood.

Who has been most helpful? In what way?

There are too many orgs, too many fingers in the pie and too much red tape. In honor of the red tape, I am going to stripe the sewer vent that they just added to my sewer line -- it is in the shape of a candy cane and the FEMA rep said I could. I think it will make a delightful Christmas decoration.

The churches have been the most helpful to folks in need. (Baptists and Methodists - the Catholic church has been disgracefully absent from the recovery efforts.)

Write the congress critters and ask them to not forget or neglect the citizens of the USofA that are living in 3rd world conditions in Texas, Mississippi, Louisana & Alabama.

Wilma & Katrina did a great deal of damage. The incompetence of FEMA is adding insult to injury and wasting our tax dollars.

What more do you need to know, we need help and it ain't happening with they way things are being run now.

110. No -- it's operation Get a Grip of FEMA and all those
damned contractors and subcontractors that are taking our tax dollars to help in the Katrina recovery but are actually complicating things and screwing the little guys along the way.

124. The first time ever I saw the the beach (19!) was in Biloxi
and I remember being on the beach and seeing Jefferson Davis' home which is gone now too. I'm sorry this happened to you all down there. I do an enviormental page for work and will put the links to the before and after video you told me about (misty eyes, pit in stomach). God Bless. I only have computer access at work so until then, take care and keep hammering at DC! We won't forget you!

127. Jefferson Davis' home, Beauvoir, was severely damaged
and they believe they can rebuild it. All of the older homes that lined the coast line, the beautiful southern homes, are gone.

Right now I'm watching a 2 hour special being aired by our local news station that contains footage of the storm as she wrecked havoc, that contains footage of before and after.

It total devastation, 80 miles long. You can get the video at wlox.com.

I'm crying, I'm reliving that day and I am riveted to the screen. I can't stop watching it. Maybe that is because I don't want to forget and become complacent, I want to remember that others share my grief and my fears. My hopefulness and my hopelessness.

Don't let folks forget us, we have been hurt by so much, forgetting us would be the ultimate hurt. We matter and we can't do this alone.

92. That is great - but that doesn't let the rest of DU off the hook.
And if Katrina threads that are posted in GD are banished to this forum, then our efforts will be harmed.

Hiding in a forum of our own does not keep this on the front page, I hope the mods get that.

135. That is great news.
Imperial Palace will open on New Years Eve.

The City of Gulfport opened 2 lanes of Hwy 90 this past week and Biloxi will be opening all four lanes of Hwy 90 on the 15th.

That will be a big help to the traffic problems we have been facing.
