Unhappy with 'Holiday': Religious groups decry wording as war on Christmas
By Stephen Kiehl and Abigail Tucker
Baltimore Sun
Friday, Dec. 2, 2005

In a campaign led by the Rev. Jerry Falwell, Christian conservatives have come to the defense of the term "Christmas tree" this, um, holiday season.

They have lambasted governments that have put "holiday trees" on display and targeted retailers that wish customers "Happy Holidays," threatening them with boycotts and dunning them with phone calls and online petitions. The groups say Christmas is under attack, and they have amassed an army of more than 1,500 lawyers to defend it.

"We want to make sure that Christmas is safe, but we know that it is not," said Mat Staver, president of the Liberty Counsel, a group endorsed by Falwell that offers free legal services to those fighting limits on Christmas displays.

"The renaming of Christmas trees to holiday trees is symbolic of what's happening with Christmas," Staver said. "When people seek to rename what otherwise is a secular symbol simply because of the name 'Christmas,' that shows the depths of political correctness run amok."

2. It should read "Christian groups decry wording"
I don't think Muslims, Jews, Buddhists or Atheists are too worried about the wording.

3. The conservatives have to declare war on something
They use to say that the libs were crying all the time. I have never heard so much crying from the right.

The Morons Do Not Apply To DU'ers, but rather the morons in the linked article above.

I'll connect my thread to this one. I think we might have a weapon against these idiots. Since Hannukah came first, "saving" Christmas as a cause is because THEY are anti-Semitic.

If it is just an "otherwise ... secular symbol" then what is the brouhaha all about?

In fact, if it is a secular symbol, shouldn't you be upset about people diluting the meaning of Christmas by attaching all these secular customs to the holy day? Isn't that why the Puritans forbade the celebration of Christmas in the first place, because of the secular and pagan connections?

It seems to me that everyone who sets up a Holiday Tree is helping to protect Christmas, by separating it from the solstice festivals that coincide with it.
