Racist holiday music playing on Southern radio stations
From the post at Daily Kos (http://dailykos.com/story/2005/12/2/16275/1369)

A racist song called "12 Days of Kwanzaa" has been playing on radio stations in North Carolina, Virginia, and Arkansas (at least). It is performed by a white guy in blackface and drag. It is stupifyingly offensive.

Song, photo of the "artist" and offending stations are HERE

4. Here's the mp3 and the offensive websites:
Here is the mp3:

http://www.coreyandjayshow.com/media/12%20Days%20Of%20Kwanza.mp3

Here's the racist's website and another:

http://www.shirleyqliquor.com
http://www.zackery.net/sql

Here's a snippet of this song's so-called "humor," copied verbatim from a White Supremacist message board:

"On the third day of Kwanzaa...
I went out to the store. I needed beer and cigarettes
but they was closed, so I smashed out the windows, did
a drive-by and cursed em all out.
On the fifth day of Kwanzaa...
My check came in the mail. AFDC! "Thank you Lord" I
said, "come on kids, let's go to the store for some
collard greens, hamhocks and some cheese."

On the eleventh day of Kwanzaa...
I got out on parole. I rolled a big joint, went down
to church and talked all out of my head. Got happy and
shouted, passed out and hollered. They called 911 and
the Lord set me free! Gave my testimony, stepped on
home, didn't even remember where I stayed, I woke up
real hungry and confused. LORD

On the twelfth day of Kwanzaa...
My childrens gathered around me. Lincoln, Alow vera,
Gyne-Lotrimin, LemonJello, OrangeJello, Tinactin,
Tempasia, KMartina, Fallopia, Shi'Thead,
Shameka-Vonquishia, Salmonella, Chlamydia Champagne,
Democtorius, Saskatoon, Cheeto and Skuketia..."

7. That's "free speech" as legislated from the gutter by Republicans
Our "forefathers" guaranteed our right to free speech so that we could speak out against a tyrannical government, without being prosecuted for our beliefs or our words. The Republicans have altered that ideal just a bit.

9. FCC complaint
Here's a strategy: Get the local NAACP chapter to file a complaint against the station at the FCC, and have them put out a press release which is sent to the trade publications covering the industry.

The FCC won't grant the complaint. That's a given. But if there is publicity, it will be hard for them to simply bury it. And having them say this is okay, but Janet Jackson's nipple requires a half million dollar fine... well, let's make the repugs squirm

Protests Close Shirley Q. Liquor Drag Minstrel Show
By Keith Boykin
September 18, 2002 06:00 AM
in sexuality
When New York organizers got word last week about a racially offensive performance involving a white man in drag and blackface, they quickly put together a demonstration that helped shut down the show.

But the strategy that worked in New York may not work in New Orleans. With a devoted following of gay men and a nationwide tour, the show's star, Charles Knipp (aka Shirley Q. Liquor), is a popular drag queen who is not going away anytime soon.

Cartoon Images of Blacks

In the 1991 poem "Tongues Untied," Marlon Riggs tells of his experience moving from Augusta, Georgia to the "great gay mecca" of San Francisco, where he "tried not to notice the few images of blacks that were most popular — joke, fetish, cartoon caricature, or disco diva adored from the distance."

.....

Perhaps it's no surprise that most of Knipp's performance cities are located in the South, but New Yorkers, on the other hand, don't take kindly to old-fashioned racism. That's what Knipp learned when his New York performance was protested and closed last Friday at the View Bar in Chelsea.

.....

Perhaps it's no surprise that some white gay men, who comprised most of the audience at the View Bar last week, love the show. Knipp reinforces preconceived negative images of African Americans that are already reflected in the white gay media.

Knipp reportedly brushed aside criticism about his show's racial content. “To be honest, people of colour who have seen my shows live or heard my CD’s overwhelmingly tell me how much they enjoyed my accurate portrayal of a certain genre of the gritty, witty Southern women that they fondly remember, no matter what her race,” he said.

Unlike Spike Lee's film, Knipp's routine is not a case of using a stereotype to educate the public. His website suggests otherwise, as he repeatedly identifies black people as "ignunt" and even creates a "compendium of ignunce." Rather than challenging the ignorance of stereotypes, Knipp uses the stereotypes to show why he thinks blacks are ignorant.

.....

Last year, Knipp gained notoriety for his holiday song "12 Days of Kwanzaa," which The Atlanta Journal-Constitution described as "toxically politically incorrect." The year before, he ran for Congress as a Libertarian candidate in Beaumont, Texas and claimed to be a black woman with 19 children.

Upon listening to this performance, I didn't know what to think. The stereotypes he is promoting are pretty offensive and gratuitous, but some of it made me laugh, too. The man has the southern black dialect down pat - it's a shame that he feels it's necessary to make the character such a negative caricature. I guess what I'm saying is that I saw a spark of real talent there, and it's a real shame that it's being used in this way.

It says Knipp ran for office as a Libertarian in Beaumont.

I do find it rather hard to believe that blacks who see his show unanimously find it funny and accurate...

48. Here here.
Racism is more obvious in the south, but it's hardly exclusive to the south.

Liberal San Francisco and Los Angeles are just as segregated at Atlanta and Dallas.

But I still prefer the culture here. Besides, neighborhoods having an ethnic identity isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I really would be curious to hear what this person's views on race, etc. are. I'm not entirely convinced that he believes in these stereotypes. Maybe he thinks he's blasting them by bringing them out in the open.

But being a white guy making a living at this does not make him look good. Whatever his motivations, it's a waste of talent. He has a knack for voice and dialect, as well as comedic timing.

He could have created a sympathetic character and still been funny. Look at Tyler Perry's "Mad Black Woman" for an example of what I'm talking about.

My last question is: if he had used more convincing makeup and less offensively stereotypical material, would people still be offended by him?

Is it wrong for a white person to impersonate a person of another race for entertainment purposes?

I don't know the answer to the question, but I suspect there are some pretty strong opinions about that.

47. Why?
Edited on Sat Dec-03-05 06:40 PM by Solly Mack
:)

Why do you zero in on the trailer hitches?

I was thinking of James Byrd - the black man that was dragged to death behind a pick-up truck - but what were you thinking?

People use trailer hitches to pull things like boats, cars, U-Hauls, and trailers - and haters use them to drag black men to their deaths.

Pabst has nothing to do with hate either - but it is a cheap beer and I wanted to use a cheap beer - because the guy in black face is a mean and cheap person.

Wrestling has nothing to with hate either - but some of the people who follow wrestling are also klan types. At least that's been this southerners experience.

Not having front teeth has nothing to do with hate either - but the depiction of a toothless, backward, butt crack showing moron angers racists and I want to anger racists.

Tipping cows is cruel - so are racists. Having sex with animals is pretty sick - so are racists.

The guy in black face IS white trash - hence the reference to the type of woman he would like

The klan robe, swastikas, nazis, confederate flag ,and fred phelps flyer's are rather self explanatory...

http://www.mywesttexas.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=15559188&BRD=2288&PAG=461&dept_id=475626&rfi=6

The first murder of the year in town, and what a murder.

And it seems to be getting worse.

The newspaper reported the woman has told her story to the police. The man was screaming the whole time and it made her so unnerved that she sideswiped a pick-up to try to get him scraped off. She said he was alive when she fled the scene.

He was completely naked and his one leg was barely attached by a thread at the hip.

If anyone deserves the death penalty, this woman, if found guilty does.

I guess I zero in on the trailer hitches because I see them as a tool, and I didn't get the idea of hate being realted to a tool. I looked at it like this: replace trailer hitch with pliers, and see whether it makes sense. I get now what you were taling about with the dragging deaths and didn't think about it at first.

34. I'm not really surprised.
I lived in the South in a small rual Republican town as a kid. The town was called Bronwood outside of Albany Ga. My dad would shield us from those kinds of people. In the mid 80s they still referred to adult black males as "Boy". In my first time back down south in 15 years I went to visit my sister in Ocala, FL. Listening to some of the talk radio stations that are in syndication down there its like night and day compared to Northern radio. Some things are so blatantly racist it sends your head into a tailspin. I was completely mortified. I asked her "There are black people living here and they don't say anything or do anything?". Her answer was "Most of the people grew up here so to them it's normal." I don't want those things to be "normal" to anyone in 2005.

58. Ft. Myers, Florida

First trip there was in 1989. Was invited to a big family party by the friend I was visiting. Met her father. Big bear of a man. Throws his arm around me (too familiar!), asks where I'm from.

"San Francisco?" he says. "Is it true it's fulla nothin' but n----rs 'n' queers?" Big laugh.

Later, friend apologizes for father's behavior, reassures me that no, my plane to FL did not go through a time warp.

"That's just the way it is," friend says, still ashamed of father's behavior. "You know, a lot of people have stopped shopping at the Piggly-Wiggly because a few black families have started showing up there."

Friend was also gay and very closeted.

I forget what a bubble I live in out here. A beautiful, precious bubble.

41. I'm just curious
I agree that this is offensive and wrong, but also I notice that there are a fair amount of black comedians whose act consists largely of mocking white people. Shows like Chapelle Show and movies like "White Chicks" show black actors dressing in white face. Should this not be codemned as well?

43. I don't think the issue is black face itself.
Edited on Sat Dec-03-05 05:23 PM by Aimah
SNL has Darrel Hammond play Jesse Jackson in black face. I don't have a problem with that. White Chicks was basically two black guys in white face trying to impersonate two white girls badly. From what I saw of the movie most of the joke was them "acting black" while in white face. If there is anything out there with a black person doing white face while doling out negative white stereotypes I condemn it.

52. Of course, that was not blackface so much as realistic makeup.
If he had used bootblack and bright red lips it would have been offensive (and stupid).

51. I personally don't mind some good-natured ribbing between the races...
Edited on Sat Dec-03-05 07:33 PM by Yollam
...when it's good-natured, based in truth, and acknowledges the humanity of the characters concerned.

Liquor reinforces some pretty B.S. stereotypes about blacks- that they are all drunk, on welfare, have a ton of kids, all with unusual or names like Sharktreesha or Revlon, on welfare, etc. etc.

He claims to be paying homage to wise, witty southern black women, and there is a little of that in his act, but the negative and false stereotypes turn it into something ugly.

I saw an episode of Chapelle where he said that white people don't use wash cloths, and they just stick the soap up their asses in the shower. It made me laugh, because I don't usually use a washcloth, but I don't put the bar of soap up there, I lather up on my hands and then... well, you get the idea. I really liked Chapelle's comedy, but I completely understand his decision to leave it. I wish him luck in finding a dew way to use his talent.

I have only seen the previews of white chicks, but it seemed to be pretty good-natured ridicule of the white sorority girl stereotype...

But there is another distinction - It's one thing to ridicule a person of privilege, like the white sorority girl growing up in a sheltered world, it's a whole other thing to make fun of the most powerless and oppressed in our society, like the homeless or a single welfare mom of color. To do so requires a lot more compassion and understanding than Knipp apparently has.

63. Dave Chapelle made fun of black people more than anything
Hell, he made fun of everyone. It wasn't about mocking white people.

56. Hate to say it, but that ShirlyQLiqueur has been on RW Hate Radio in...
...Georgia too. I think Neil Boortz had (or still does have) "her" on as far back as 2003.

I heard something like that back in 2003, when my former boss was surfing one of those websites. I don't think he understood why I didn't find it funny, or maybe he did... :grr:

If we are to have free speech here, he must also be allowed free speech. It is a sword that cuts both ways. If we create a gov't that can shut him down, it will also move to shut us down.

They're calling for radio stations not to play him.

Doesn't that fall under free speech too?

66. Agree with what many are saying: race-based humor is not objectionable in
and of itself. It's when that humor wallows in nothing but purely negative stereotypes that we a have a problem.
