it originally was asking or telling God to damn someone (to hell). Therefore it was taking God's name in vain since only God makes that decision. Today, it just has degenerated into a cuss word. I was raised in a fundie church and left when I was 16 because of the hypocrisy.

I left the church over ridicule of my music ministry... I was rockin' and my music was clearly bringing in a bunch of kids that wouldn't ordinarily come to church. I had a request list every Friday and Sunday night; people were diggin' it. Everyone except a few church elders who told me the beat of my music came from the depths of hell. I told them that Jesus works in mysterious ways and we should all be careful of what we deem unfit because it could be one of those mysterious ways.

It is a good thing to learn a few simple tenets of Christ from the Bible that directly attacks what they support and believe and throw it in their faces, and then shake the dust off your feet as you leave them with a few choice quips.
