What Muslim leaders/groups have condemned terrorism?
Edited on Sat Dec-03-05 01:10 PM by booley
You know the back story..argueing with freeper bigots who claim that Islam condones and requires pedophilia and slave owning and all Liberals who are against the war are going to join Al Que-da because we all so full of "hate", don't you know...

etc ect, blah blah blah...

ANYWHO, an interesting point popped into my head. One freeper said that if Muslim (and democrat) leaders would condemn terrorist tactics, then he would feel differently.

I know I have heard of Muslims who have condemned things like the beheading and 9-11 and the kidnappings. But like so much other stuff crammed into my little brain, it got lost.

So can anyone cite me Muslims who have condemned terrorist tactics and what precisely they have said?

Links appreciated...

1. While you're at it, cite some Christian leaders who condemn invasion and
occupation, and killing thousands of innocents in the name of freedom.

2. Good point
and there are quite a few.

Alas, they aren't the ones that the Shrubbery of the cons listen too or consider 'real" Christians.

3. Timmy McVeigh was a Christian.
I don't recall that all Christian religious leaders were obliged to make official statements condemning the OK City bombing in order to prove that they were not supporters of right wing lunatic christian terrorists.

I could be wrong though, it might have happened, perhaps I just forgot.

8. In all fairness...
Was Timothy someone who killed in the name of a christianity or someone who killed and happened to be a christian?

9. Unaware of the Christian Identity movement?
Yes McVeigh and his co-conspirators were part of the lunatic right wing christian identity neo-nazi underground. Perhaps you can make the argument that they are not 'true' christians, but I will assure you that quite a few muslims will make the same argument about al qaida. I think the analogy is quite fair, and reveals the massive bigotry in the original question.

13. Google Christian Identity Movement McVeigh
I'll admit that other than the fact that the bombing was timed to coincide with the Waco massacre, a holy event for the CI creeps, and that McVeigh used all of the christian identity language (ZOG etc.) to describe his beliefs, that evidence of a direct membership in recognized CI organizations has not been proven. It is clear that he at a minimum shared their belief system and moved within their circle of associates.

17. No he just used all the language of the CI movement.
If you want to split hairs here, fine. McVeigh moved in CI circles, associated with CI people, and spoke using CI terms. Nichols too. If you want to deny the relation because neither of them said 'I'm killing for God', ok.

18. basically
You are trying to make the argument that McVeigh was a "Christian terrorist". You are using his association with the Identity movement which is loose connection in it of itself. You are trying to compare McVeigh to extremists of other religions, and that is what I am doing too.

And once again, was Dobson asked to publicly disavow his actions? Was the pope? Pat Roberts? Jerry Falwell?

14. At the time, I was recently ex-fundamentalist.
And of the democrats I was around drew a distinction between the violence-prone movements, the "Identity movement" (some segments of which are emphatically non-violent), and fundamentalism or even evangelism. One of those "they all look the same" things, I guess. Nary a word about Xianity being a "religion of peace", or "it's only a few fruitcakes" or "McVeigh wasn't representative of the mass of Xians."

On the other hand, the church I had left condemned McVeigh, and nearly every congregation I knew a member of condemned McVeigh, to the effect that he was a horrible, insane murderer, engaging in terrorism and hate, with absolutely no possible justification. Even if you hated the federal government, McVeigh was far, far over the line.

No hedging. No "but attacks on other federal installations be ok." Or "they weren't really innocent victims." No hint of "root causes", no hint of "he was bad, but ..." Most churches I heard about (almost all very conservative, to a congregation) weren't even concerned about being smeared with the same brush: they didn't wait until people were looking at them and questioning them. Unlike CAIR. Unlike al-Azhar University, which at first justified, then under pressure condemned the 9/11 attackers.

I have to assume some lunatics celebrated 9/11, but nobody on the Xian side tried to say they didn't (if they did--I honestly didn't hear of any) or say "well, they're oppressed" or "we have to understand where they're coming from." Unlike pictures and descriptions I've seen elsewhere of some segments of the Muslim population, poetry by the then-ambassador of Sa'udi Arabia to Britain, or many, many others that hedge or find excuses.

Although I will say there are conspiracy theorists: those behind the Murrow Bldg attack were Muslims; or it was an inside job. And they cite alleged inconsistencies and inadequacies in the evidence. But those are marginal kooks, and nobody cares about hurting their feelings or denouncing them in no uncertain terms, to the extent they're even visible.

This pretty much sums up the Majority of the Muslim groups in the US. As a Muslim it gets nerve racking because I've seen reports of groups condemning the attacks on American MSM news. MSN, CNN, CBS, ABC, NBC and even Fox right after 9-11. If I've seen the reports what's stopping others from seeing them.

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

U.S. MUSLIM RELIGIOUS COUNCIL ISSUES FATWA AGAINST TERRORISM

The Fiqh Council of North America wishes to reaffirm Islam's absolute condemnation of terrorism and religious extremism.

Islam strictly condemns religious extremism and the use of violence against innocent lives.

There is no justification in Islam for extremism or terrorism.

Targeting civilians’ life and property through suicide bombings or any other method of attack is haram – or forbidden - and those who commit these barbaric acts are criminals, not “martyrs.”

The Qur’an, Islam’s revealed text, states: "Whoever kills a person …it is as though he has killed all mankind. And whoever saves a life, it is as though he had saved all mankind."
(Qur’an, 5:32)

Prophet Muhammad said there is no excuse for committing unjust acts: "Do not be people without minds of your own, saying that if others treat you well you will treat them well, and that if they do wrong you will do wrong to them. Instead, accustom yourselves to do good if people do good and not to do wrong (even) if they do evil." (Al-Tirmidhi)

God mandates moderation in faith and in all aspects of life when He states in the Qur’an: “We made you to be a community of the middle way, so that (with the example of your lives) you might bear witness to the truth before all mankind.” (Qur’an, 2:143)

In another verse, God explains our duties as human beings when he says: “Let there arise from among you a band of people who invite to righteousness, and enjoin good and forbid evil.” (Qur’an, 3:104)

Islam teaches us to act in a caring manner to all of God's creation. The Prophet Muhammad, who is described in the Qur’an as “a mercy to the worlds” said: “All creation is the family of God, and the person most beloved by God (is the one) who is kind and caring toward His
family."

In the light of the teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah we clearly and strongly state:

1. All acts of terrorism targeting civilians are haram (forbidden) in Islam.

2. It is haram for a Muslim to cooperate with any individual or group that is involved in any act of terrorism or violence.

3. It is the civic and religious duty of Muslims to cooperate with law enforcement authorities to protect the lives of all civilians.
We issue this fatwa following the guidance of our scripture, the Qur’an, and the teachings of our Prophet Muhammad – peace be upon him. We urge all people to resolve all conflicts in just and peaceful manners.

We pray for the defeat of extremism and terrorism. We pray for the safety and security of our country, the United States, and its people. We pray for the safety and security of all inhabitants of our planet. We pray that interfaith harmony and cooperation prevail both in the United States and all around the globe.
