5. Uh, maybe just a guess about...
... why you think this is bogus?

Hell, I don't know the guy from Adam, and I don't know Lawrence, KS, except that it's a college town. And, I certainly can't judge his veracity based on what's in the story. So, what in it do you think is out of place?

Cheers.

Seems ridiculous.

It's not the people who believe in science who take up the pitchforks and torches, figuratively speaking.

13. Where do you glean that it's "evolution proponents"...
who attacked him? From reading the article, I think the total opposite:

"Last week, Mirecki asked the university to cancel the class after he created a furor by sending an e-mail to a student organization mocking Christian fundamentalists.

Mirecki had referred to religious conservatives as "fundies," and said a course describing intelligent design as mythology would be a "nice slap in their big fat face." He has apologized for those comments."

16. No they weren't evolution proponents
This professor was planning on teaching a course in creationism as a form of mythology. He is a very liberal professor of religious studies. He sent an email out that became public where he made fun of creationists. It said something to the effect of 'putting the creationists in their place' or making them look stupid. The fundies went nuts and the university canceled the class. Then today he got beat up.

There is a thread on the KS board about this

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=153x3115

The professor isn't the bad guy here. He made a stupid mistake with the comments in his email but the guys who beat him up are way more wrong, IMO.

KU class angers ‘design’ advocates

Course would be taught as religion, not as science

By Sophia Maines (Contact)

Tuesday, November 22, 2005

Creationism and intelligent design are slated to be the subjects of a Kansas University class next semester — but as mythology, not science.

“The KU faculty has had enough,” said Paul Mirecki, chairman of KU’s religious studies department. He said he planned to teach “Special Topics in Religion: Intelligent Design, Creationism and other Religious Mythologies” next semester.

Mirecki’s plans angered some of the state’s religious conservatives, who earlier this month successfully pushed changes in state science standards that critique evolution. And one intelligent design proponent questioned Mirecki’s science credentials.

“I would predict that (Mirecki’s) effort will go down in history as one of the laughingstocks of the century,” said John Calvert, an attorney and managing director of the Intelligent Design Network in Johnson County.

but the prof made a stupid mistake with those email comments. I don't think he deserved to be beat up for it, but it was a dumb move on his part. And by all accounts, he is an excellent teacher.

21. and another article about the class being canceled
KU Delays Class on Creationism After Professor's Comments
AP

A class to discuss creationism and intelligent design has been canceled from the spring schedule at the University of Kansas.

The school said today the professor who has been a target of conservative criticism requested that the class be withdrawn. Professor Paul Mirecki made the decision in light of e-mails he posted on a student organization forum deriding Christianity and religious conservatives.

It is not clear if and when the course will be taught, which already had 25 students enrolled.

Mirecki, chairman of the Religious Studies Department, repeated an earlier apology for his statements.

The class was added after the Kansas State Board of Education decided to include more criticism of evolution in science standards for public-school students.

26. Well, the Troglodytes of Topeka...
... the Phelps Gang, are picketing the funerals of dead soldiers because Fred Phelps says their deaths are "God's response to America's acceptance of homosexuals."

Wichita was at one time the home of Randall Terry and his renamed Operation Rescue (now Operation Save America), where someone in 1994 walked up to Dr. George Tiller and fired two shots into him while he was about to drive away from his abortion clinic. Operation Save America then were responsible for periodic episodes of stalking his female employees.

I could see a couple of hard-core hothead fundies getting all worked up about teaching the guy a lesson because he made fun of them.

Cheers.

Like that wackjob at Duke who faked a report of a "hate crime", it ended up being part of the routine talking points of all the conservative talk shows for a year.

But we'll see.

14. As was pointed out up the thread a bit,
I did read the story wrong.

I thought this guy was saying he was IN SUPPORT of creationism and some of evolution-toughs beat him up.

Looks like he was criticizing creationism, so I have no problem believing some local knuckle-draggers beat some love of Jesus into him.
