All this hoopla over a co-opted Pagan custom is just moronic.
In truth, Holiday is the correct term for a birthday celebration that was conveniently selected to coincide with much older and ongoing festivities.

Try as I might, I cannot find any New Testament references to “decking the halls” or “trimming the tree.”

This religious outrage over some presumed entitlement to marketing is pathetic.

(This is a repost of a comment I made in a previous thread.)

1. Christian sulking.....
That's what it is. Looking for ways to feel victimized, despite the fact that we Christians are an 80% majority in this country.

2. I always thought the word HOLIDAY came out of HOLY DAY
I guess if ya don't put Jesus front and center, they get all pissy about it. But he was a humble guy, by all accounts, so I doubt HE would mind....

4. Actually, it's brilliant
Fundy checkbooks spring wide open at the thought of "persecution." Read: Republican fund-raising. Plus, the Corporate Media LOVE any lame-ass alleged divisive subject that will keep the peasants shopping til they drop.

Ah...if only "Christmas" could go missing on Aruba.

9. actually, the whole thing is wrong. The gospel says that there were
shepherds watching their flocks by night. That means it was spring. Tie that in with the astronomy for the star and you have April 17, 7 BC for the birth date. Isn't december 25 the saturnalia? Didn't they overrun that date to kill the Saturnalia? I think so.

11. Some say it was March
Thus the fish symbol for the early church- Jesus was a Pisces! :) But regardless of the day asserted by various people, I don't think any religious scholar argues that Christ was born in December.

And if you really want to see their heads explode, tell them that the Bible prohibits the very modern day celebration that they are trying to defend. There are several books of the OT that forbid the decorating of evergreens and the Yule celebrations, as they were definitely known as Pagan customs at the time they were written. It's just so funny because they don't know their own Bible. :)

14. I'm going to make this the last Christmas post I open.
I think the thought that some believe that there is actually an organized movement to destroy Christmas is starting to anger me. This pops in my head as the 20th person of the day asks me how my Christmas Shopping is going ( I don't celebrate it) and as to avoid a long explanation or offense I just respond " I guess it's going" and give a little smile. They tend to laugh and go on about their shopping hijinks while I sit there and hope they don't ask me to go into details.

If I continue reading these posts I think the next person who asks about my Christmas is going to get an ear full. I'm going to answer the way I want to but it may come out as an outburst. So since this is my last reading and last post about the Christmas issue: May All the Christians on DU have a Merry Christmas, May All of the Jews on DU have a Happy Hanukkah, May those who celebrate Kwanzaa have a Happy Kwanzaa, and whoever I've left out May you keep your sanity this month and have a Happy New Year.
