'Vanity Fair' Offers Fresh Details on Judith Miller Saga

NEW YORK In a lengthy feature piece on this autumn's Judith Miller saga forthcoming in the January issue of Vanity Fair (on newstands Dec. 13), writer Seth Mnookin covers much familiar ground but also reveals new details and complaints from the reporter's colleagues at The New York Times. Publisher Arthur O. Sulzberger Jr. also gets a good working-over from unnamed in-house critics.

The Vanity Fair article reveals that the Times team actually finished a draft of that piece exactly a week before it appeared. Adam Liptak, one of the team members, recalls printing it out at 3 a.m. on a Saturday morning and reading it in the cab home, before deciding, "This thing sucks and I don't want my name on it. ... There was no logical reason why she couldn't tell us her testimony." So it went through another week of drafting, with Miller finally convinced, partly on the advice of her Times friend David Barstow, to reveal her grand jury testimony.

Elsewhere, Mnookin pulls no punches in stating that over the years Miller "had built a reputation for sleeping with her sources," had dated one of Sulzberger's best friends, Steve Ratner, "and had even, for a time, shared a vacation home with Sulzberger," whatever that means.

I heard an authorative rumor a couple of years ago. Told to me by a former Notre Dame University prof, who said that some years back, the President of that university was caught having inappropriate sexual contact with an undergraduate in his office. According to my informant, the President was a Priest (which is normal at a Catholic university) and the undergraduate was male. But the remarkable part of the rumor is this: the university payed $10 million to the NY Times to keep them from reporting this story. Of course, I have absolutely no way of knowing if this rumor is true. But it is so wonderfully creepy, I can't help but repeating it. :grin:

I can't say I'm surprised about Miller at least. She seems to be a little "over invested" in the political intrigue. Coming out of prison like a smiley cheerleader with moist bloomers.

I was gingerly turning a reference with which you and I both disagree with.

I find sexuality coupled with high self-esteem pretty damned attractive. Hence my first post. I do however feel sorrow for someone like Miller who seems desperate for attention. The term skank would not be one I would choose.

Those are my judgemental bases laid bare. Plus the fact that it rhymes with my last name and I know the childishness of it being thrown around personally.

I did not catch that you were calling the other poster out on their use of the word and it sounded like you were suggesting that a woman who flirts is a skank. Sorry I didn't catch that (it's still early).

Of course, the use of the word skank in this thread does demonstrate the point of my post - that being by what criteria we judge and condemn women. The original article is actually interesting in that the person being interviewed seemed to think it necessary to include the idea that JM is sleeping her way to the good stories, that this was her "reputation". Says a great deal about how women are judged in general and the responses on this thread support that idea rather than challenging why the point was made in the first place.

I shouldn't have taken it so light heartedly. I was sort of joking my way out of this thread.

of her I have felt that she plays: sexy,provocative,eye twinkler glances towards men.....very obvious to me.her recent interview in Britan showed her being seated to a couch and she was 'over the top" giggly etc.they then cut to the interview.......why did they show her being seated?......I think for this very inappropriate reason.......manipulation.( the interviewer WAS very handsome tee hee)
