Another GOP Closet Gay Hypocrite Bites the Dust!

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2005/12/06/national/a202906S47.DTL

(12-06) 21:20 PST Spokane, Wash. (AP) --

Mayor James E. West was recalled from office Tuesday in a special election over allegations he offered jobs and perks to young men he met in a gay Internet chat room.

West, 54, must leave his position when the election results are certified Dec. 16.

With just over half of the 110,000 mail-in ballots counted, 38,718, or 65 percent, voted to recall West, while 20,681, or 35 percent, voted to retain him.

"I said I'd abide by the will of the voters, obviously, and they've spoken," West told The Associated Press. "I'm at peace with their decision and disappointed."

West has spent 25 years in public office and is the city's first elected chief executive to be ousted before his term expired.

The campaign to recall him began last spring after the Spokesman-Review newspaper reported that West was a closeted homosexual who visited gay chat rooms using his city-owned laptop computer, and offered internships and other favors to young men he hoped to have sex with.

West, a former Boy Scout executive and sheriff's deputy, was elected mayor in 2003 after serving more than two decades as a conservative Republican in the state Legislature, where he voted against gay-friendly bills.

The recall petition contended West used his political office for personal benefit by offering a city internship to someone he thought was an 18-year-old man he had met in a gay online chat room and with whom he had sexually explicit chats.

One person West believed was a high school senior was actually a computer expert hired by the newspaper to snare West.

West, who has not been charged with any crime, acknowledged making mistakes in his personal life but asked voters to give him a second chance.

City Council President Dennis Hession will become interim mayor until the council appoints someone to finish the two years remaining on West's term.

3. Why is it always the Repukes that come out against gays?
He deserves everything he is getting and more--he should also be made to publicly apologize for every hateful, anti-gay bill he has supported.

7. Didn't some guy close to Raygun do the same?
Gosh--I'm mad at myself, because I can't recall his name right now, but I seem to recall he was very outspoken about what he called the 'gay lifestyle' and backed anti-gay rulings himself. It was later found he was gay.

8. He was the guy who started the first PACs, maybe?
That one, whose name I can't remember either, was very conservative. He was a closet case who died of AIDS. IIRC, he was mentioned in the book And The Band Played On.

16. Perhaps, murielm--
I'm so drawing a blank on this guy--I just know I was rather outraged and surprised to find out what a huge closet case he was.

I didn't know that he was mentioned in The Band Played On--thanks for letting me know.

I'm relieved someone else knows what/who I am talking about--

:hi:

Thanks!

17. Craig Spence?
I believe you're referring to Craig Spence. He was a lobbyist during the Bush-Reagan years and was found dead in a motel room in Boston. It was ruled a suicide. I'm not sure if he had Aids or not.

12. No one (okay, almost no one) would have a problem with these guys
being gay if they didn't spend so much time publicly bashing gay people. Hypocrites.

18. Yep. Self-loathing in action.
He claims to be both "at peace" and dissapointed", which is an interesting combination.

I wonder what exactly it is he's dissapointed in? There are so many possibilities.

If he'd like to come clean and spill some beans, (another interesting combination) well, that's sometimes a good and believable form of apology.

20. So if he was disappointed in their decision
he should just look in the mirror. He has only himself to blame.
