1. He's a comedian, not a newsman.
He's paid to be funny, and believe it or not, our side does some pretty funny and stupid stuff sometimes too.

66. It's a parody of Bill O'Reilly, and other anchor-based shows.
Maybe it's not your thing, but if you don't think it's funny, then you may want to get your head checked.

156. I never go anywhere without my emergency Baby Ruth -- just in case...
...I find myself in close proximity to a punch bowl or a swimming pool. Or, perhaps the Holy Grail -- a pool party WITH a punch bowl! (Nirvana!)

Oddly enough, I seldom get invited to parties where there's a punch bowl or a swimming pool. I can't imagine why.

Whatsamatter? Mistake Comedy Central for being a real "news" channel? Maybe that's a sad commentary on the state of the corporate media. You're kinda walking into a movie after the first 20 minutes...stick around, watch a couple episodes and then see what you think.

Yes, we know it's satire, yes we know he makes fun of the RW guys, but it's too much like Daily Show, and the set is very dark and mostly he's not that funny but bland. He just yaps and yaps too much for my ears.

Liked him on Stranges With Candy though. He oughta to stick to acting not yapping so much.

138. I didn't like the format at first. However, I think that the show's...
gotten better over time. I think that they've made a concerted effort to have it be different from the Daily Show. Otherwise, it would just be more of the same. The most impressive part for me is that Colbert does almost the entire show himself (along with his guest). The Daily Show has other contributing "reporters" to at least give Jon Stewart a break.

I like the format now that I've gotten used to it. The Word is great, in my opinion. That's where you can really tell that they're doing a parody of the right. If anyone doubts it, this is the proof.

And I've always been a huge Daily Show fan. No confusion about real news vs. comedy from me. I just can't take him in more than small doses and that's why I loved him on the Daily Show. I know he's spoofing O'Reilly et al, but after about 5 minutes, I have to turn his show off because I just find him annoying. My husband and I wanted to give him a chance and tried to stick it out through the first episode, but ended up turning it off after about 10-15 minutes.

Sorry, the annoyance factor outweighs the comedy factor for me.

Colbert does verbose and intricate monologue, and even though I love both shows, by the time Colbert is on it can be a little tiring. That's not a bad thing. There's another layer of satire to work through that some people aren't up to at 11pm at night.

With respect to Raleigh? I've been living there a long time, and I don't remember seeing him... His bio on www.colbertnation.com says he worked at "WKJC Channel 5 News" in Raleigh from 1991 to 1998, but channel 5 here is WRAL, and has been for at least the last fifteen years. WKJC is a country music station in Michigan. And my subject line is meant to be tongue in cheek, I see colbertnation.com as just another part of the satire, animated gif waving flags and all.

80. Hey just so you know...
I wasn't trying to get all snarky with you in my second post, Professor--just thought I'd continue the trend. Sometimes threads about 'the funny' fall into the pet peeve category. I guess I'm not alone on that. Anyway, thanks for the nudge in the right direction. :D

I'm pretty familiar with Karl's posts. I knew that wasn't something that would come from him without tongue firmly in cheek. And, since you left open the option that he was kidding, thought i'd help.

Have a good day.

I hate those guys who get on their high horse and talk down to you as if you are an idiot. He claims to deliver the Truth and then goes off on these stupid asides...

And what's with that eagle? I swear, at the opening of every show, it dives down off the screen like Judy going down on Chalabi!

And the way he dances into the interview area like he's a champion boxer or something - it's disrespectful of his guests, fer christsakes...

68. No, you are not...
Btw, what does being in lock step with "our" humor mean?

Nevertheless, my point is that you can find him funny or boring... but calling him names and saying that he isn't on our side or whatever is just based on some distorted judgment. He is playing a character, if you think his satire is ineffective, then that's fine with me. But that doesn't make him a twit, does it? If Stewart stops making me laugh and his jokes fall flat, would that make him a republican shill or just a guy trying to be funny but failing?

71. You said "get a damn sense of humor"
implying that anyone who didn't find him funny lacks a sense of humor. I agree name calling is unnecessary. The lock step with our humor comment was in reference to another thread about dem bashing and how some feel that we shouldn't criticize dems, in other words, be in lock step.

78. No, anyone who doesn't understand that he is "playing" a twit...
lacks a sense of humor. Not finding him funny would mean you have a "different" sense of humor. Not understanding his schtick would mean you have no sense of humor. You can still understand what he is doing and find it utterly boring and unsuccessful. But to imply that Colbert is a twit and not on our side simply means one doesn't get satire... and therefore, lacks a sense of humor.

Every frame (to use the incorrect term) of that show is a direct parody of one of a faux channel show. He O'Lielly, Insannity, That hume-orless show that I can't remember the name of, all of them. 127. heeeheeeheee
have been assured by a very knowing American of my acquaintance in London, that a young healthy child well nursed is at a year old a most delicious, nourishing, and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled; and I make no doubt that it will equally serve in a fricassee or a ragout.
I do therefore humbly offer it to public consideration that of the hundred and twenty thousand children already computed, twenty thousand may be reserved for breed, whereof only one-fourth part to be males; which is more than we allow to sheep, black cattle or swine; and my reason is, that these children are seldom the fruits of marriage, a circumstance not much regarded by our savages, therefore one male will be sufficient to serve four females. That the remaining hundred thousand may, at a year old, be offered in the sale to the persons of quality and fortune through the kingdom; always advising the mother to let them suck plentifully in the last month, so as to render them plump and fat for a good table. A child will make two dishes at an entertainment for friends; and when the family dines alone, the fore or hind quarter will make a reasonable dish, and seasoned with a little pepper or salt will be very good boiled on the fourth day, especially in winter.
I have reckoned upon a medium that a child just born will weigh 12 pounds, and in a solar year, if tolerably nursed, increaseth to 28 pounds.
I grant this food will be somewhat dear, and therefore very proper for landlords, who, as they have already devoured most of the parents, seem to have the best title to the children.

153. I like it better than the daily show -for now
I like it better because it's new and has a different agnle. Once the novelty wears off in a few months it might lose steam.

136. I think that he's gotten better with each episode.
He's so good at parodying the right that it's sometimes difficult to even tell that it's a parody. In fact, there was recently a post on Free Republic about how much they liked him. It wasn't until about a dozen posts down where someone finally said "Dude, he's making fun of us!".

144. Clear rip on O'Reilly
I was a big fan of Colbert while he was on the Daily Show, which is easily one of the funniest shows on TV. His new show is great too, but you have to watch it from a certain perspective. If you have the stomach, watch a few minutes of the O'Reilly Factor or Shep Smith or Cavuto before you watch the Colbert Report and you'll soon see that everything Colbert says is a giant rip on the format of those idiotic shows. He says things that are very conservative and insane, but its clearly just to get a laugh from his extremely liberal crowd. The format of his show mirrors that of the shows on Faux News, and every segment, although presented as ultra-conservative, is meant to be made fun of.

It's no Daily Show, but it provides a few laughs here and there.

151. I'm wondering...
For the people who can't understand that this show is satire -- what did they think Colbert was doing as a "correspondent" on The Daily Show? Was he a real reporter in these people's mind?

It's mindboggling to me. The original poster must've just been introduced to television..

LOL. "You're an idiot" & "It's a joke" - how much longer can it go?
