Carper supports gradual withdrawal.
Just read this on the UD site:

"...Carper, who spoke to about 150 students in Smith Hall Dec. 5, a day after his return from a visit to Israel, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Iraq, said the U.S. military is not welcome in Iraq and that a political solution is now the best way forward....

Carper praised the troops who have served in Iraq and said the pullout should begin with the National Guards and Reserves..."

As the article continues, you can see why he's DLC ;( driving down the middle of the road.

1. There is no easy fix right now

Why criticize him for admitting that?

2. Uh, cause of his voting record & weasel words?
Kind of a trademark of the DLC. I know as a "Hill" dem you think they do no wrong, but there are those who disagree and feel the DLC is destroying the Democratic Party.

But this is just a guess...

4. I hardly think the DLC can do no wrong
Oh and BTW, I'm a "Hill" dem because I live on Capitol Hill.

I just think we need to change our strategy in Iraq and the stakes are too high to leave now.

5. In that case I apologize for jumping to conclusions.
You need a disclaimer! I have a real problem with staying there, I am old enough to have been caught up in the last time we tried to "withdraw with honor". Bad for them, bad for our troops.

6. "withdraw with honor"
I hope that kind of empty pride doesn't get any of our guys killed.

But that being said I think the stakes are too high to leave now.

History is on your side though, wars of occupation usually are lost by the occupiers.

Either way, we dug ourselves a pretty deep hole.

7. Mainly because of the last paragraph
“There are some, not a lot, but some who feel that we should just be there for as long as it takes with very high levels of troop presence,” he said. “There are others who would...see us pull out in six months. The broader cross-section of them believes there is some...middle ground better meets our security needs and those of the Iraqis.”

I know it's a restating of his take on the students, but it just sounded wishy-washy to me. I love the guy. Carper is a very nice guy and he wants everyone to play fair and be nice to each other. He really doesn't like the atmosphere in DC, but playing fair and trying to compromise all the time doesn't get us where we need to be - at least not right now. If everyone worked the way he did, we really would be better off than we are today. We'd have our enviro policies back on track, businesses would still be getting a decent handout (not what they want, but he wouldn't cut them off), AND our programs for the poor, needy and homeless would be getting the attention they needed.

Unfortunately, he can't fix it all and playing middle ground isn't what we need right now. In the "Lead, Follow, or get out of the way" methodology, I think he needs to pick one and stick with it. I don't think he's doing any of the 3 right now for the dem party as a whole.

3. Fix? That's the problem.
We keep on insisting that we can 'fix' this. We can't.

Gradual withdrawal is bullshit. At some point the troops on the ground are insufficient to protect and supply the bases. Given that our idiots in washington went with a minimal force to start, I'm guessing that the tipping point is not far below the normal force level of 130,000 (we are at 160,000 now) that we have had there since the misguided invasion.

We need to get out, and once we realize that, we need to do so swiftly and completely.
