Compassionate Conservative

I'd like to tell a story in memory of my cousin, Dr. Ned R. Johnson, a good and dedicated Democrat, who died a couple of weeks ago.

Because of an injury when he was in med school, Ned suffered from increasingly painful back and eventually had to rely on crutches, the kind you fit your arms into. At a truck stop somewhere on the West Coast (I'm not exactly sure where), he fell in a particularly nasty restroom and couldn't get up. A man in a scuffed pair of boots came in, looked down at him, said "Someone ought to help this man" and walked out. "That man," said Ned, "is a compassionate conservative."
