OMG everyone NEEDS to watch this!! Zombie GIs, stolen election...
Does anyone watch that series "Masters of Horror" on Showtime? I don't normally like horror movies, but last night my boyfriend said "I saved a horror movie for us to watch." Naturally, I scowled at him, because I figured he was just being sadistic because I hate horror movies, but he said that he was going to watch it by himself until he saw it being flamed on conservative websites, where people were saying "fucking liberals" and "George Bush isn't really like that."

OOOOOOOOOOHHHHH.

So I watched this one-hour segment called "The Homecoming" by Joe Dante.

What can I say? Except that it was the best thing ever. Few things are as satisfying as seeing your own deepest beliefs adapted for a pop culture medium.

So, the story is about a Republican presidential speech writer, whose mentor is "Karl Rove" (the character's initials are KR, I can't remember what his name is in the script), and his lover is Ann Coulter ("Jane Cleaver"). He goes on some weasel-pundit type show and faces off with "Cindy Sheehan," who was arrested for asking the President why her son had died. They talk about how no WMDs have been found, and the host "Marty" asks if the GIs are dying for nothing, and the speechwriter says "no, it's not like that...my own brother died in vietnam...if I could have one wish, I wish that woman's son could come back..." At this point he sort of spazzes and blanks out, then catches himself and blah blahs about how if the GIs came back, they would tell everyone how important it is to serve their country and how proud they were to make the sacrifice.

Less than 48 hours later, on an air base where flag-draped coffins have been delivered, a soldier patrols, hears noises that he things are photographers, yells that no photographs of dead soldiers are allowed, US Army policy, but instead is confronted by the sight of zombie GIs rising out of the coffins.

What do they want?

They want to vote. After they vote, they really die, for good.

At first "Ann Coulter" and "Karl Rove" are all over that, "Ann Coulter" goes on the talk show with some religious troglodyte and they are all, like, this is a miracle, and as per legality schmegality, who is going to tell these brave formerly deceased veterans that they can't vote?

Until, of course, it turns out they are not voting for "Bush." They are voting "for anyone who will end this evil war."

Then they get quarantined in orange jumpsuits and declared a public hazard and the same troglodyte and "Ann Coulter" are all, blah, gates of hell spewed them out, etc. etc.

Then there are some really touching moments (like "Karl Rove" emotionally blackmailing "Cindy Sheehan" using her resurrected son as bait or a couple whose son is in Iraq giving shelter to a zombie GI in their diner), some WHOA plot twists and at the end when the election is STOLEN (which is explicitly copped to), the zombie soldiers realize that their votes were not counted and "call for reinforcement." "Ann Coulter" gets her brains blown out while she is screaming "bring it on." By the end the zombies (who never harm anyone in the movie until they eat "Karl Rove" after they realize the election was fixed and their voices were not heard) take over DC to ensure that never again are soldiers set to die for "horseshit and elbow grease."

Seriously. I have not seen anything I enjoyed so much, well...ever.

If you at all have access to this, WATCH IT!

I don't have showtime either but I watched it last night...it's brutally anti-Bush. whoever made the movie left no prisoners, that's for sure.

3. Fantastic show...
And that was a great episode. Did you notice at the end during the election they mention the discrepency between the exit polls and the actual results? Very good. It's clear that Dante's a dem expressing his outrage through his art.

4. Some not-so-unimportant tidbits I saw
Edited on Wed Dec-07-05 02:22 PM by StopThePendulum
The Ann Coulter character engaging in kinky sex (bondage, S&M) while pontificating about family values and blaming liberals for the courseness of our culture while on camera (exposure of hypocrisy)

At no time have the zombies attacked blacks, Democrats, or the disenfranchised. Their targets were the repuke power brokers who sent them to "die for horseshit and elbow grease."

The Rove type whose brother was allegedly killed in Vietnam was actually murdered by his own hand--he got away with it because he was a little boy at the time of the crime. Mama covered it up for all those years.

Aren't they so lovely, those pious repukes? :sarcasm:

5. there was lots of good throwaway stuff
that just set the context. Rove's joke about treating zombie vets as real vets, meaning screwing them out of benefits, orange jumpsuits, etc. etc. It was amazing.

9. really? why did you feel it was overhyped?
do you mean politically? Because it couldn't have been any more political/explici in its indictment of Bush.

11. Wayyyyyy Overhyped. The Night Of Its Original Airing There Were
Multiple threads and eternal links exclaiming that "this is huge. It could be a B horror movie that turns the country on to impeachment. Everyone will be talking about it. Tune in, it is gonna wake everybody up. This is major. Like nothing you've ever seen etc..."

I posted a thread afterwards saying I enjoyed it all, but only because I am a DU'er and know so much, but that from my point of view I didn't think that any average joe would pay much mind and that it definitely wouldn't be talk of the town.

I was right.

about whom they were depicting. LOL. They didn't even bother to hide Bush's voice when he was making a speech in the background.

I hope every fundie freeper sees this and has nightmares from how on. The zombie soldiers are coming for them. It's the Rapture. Gaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

19. Fan-Frelling-Tastic!
I'm not big into horror stuff other than "Buffy" and "Angel", but this was fan-frelling-tastic! I don't know whether to laugh or cry. The ending was so perfect. And Bob Picardo (the HoloDoc from Star Trek: Voyager) as "Karl Rove" was hysterical! He must've been loving that role. That was the best TV I've seen all year!

20. it's sort of the same as Buffy or Angel
taking a metaphor and making it literal: high school is hell/high school is literally on a hellmouth, soldiers are made into zombies and disenfrenchized of their vote.

Really, really funny dark comedy mixed with satire. Robert Picardo was hillarious as the Karl Rove stand-in.

23. pleasantly surprised
At first I thought it was a bit absurd but kept watching it to see how it would play out. After about 20 minutes it actually started to show some signs of being a real movie rather than than just a political lampoon against the bush team. By the end of the movie we decided it really was not a bad movie at all. As many have posted, some of the things they said were truly interesting. I don't want to go overboard on details as it may ruin it for someone else. I may watch it again.

I don't think it will have any political effect but it was entertaining.

26. I LOVED the scene with the Pat Robertson character
The sleazy political talk show host whose show we saw from time to time had a Pat Robertson/Falwell type of character who was at first interviewed about the soldiers coming back from the dead. At first, the White House thought they were going to be able to use them to their advantage because the President in a speech called back the dead. The Pat Robertson character was practically calling the President the son of God and attributing holy powers to him to be able to raise the dead. He was praising the return of dead soldiers as a sign that heaven was on the administration's side.

Then when we quickly discover that the dead soldiers are against the war and the White House, the same TV preacher calls them the spawn of Satan. What a quick turnaround.

I found it quite amusing, as this is probably exactly how Robertson or Falwell would react.
