I have a question regarding the whole "War on Christmas" dilema....
Is the outrage just with Christmas being replaced? Today's WP reported that many were peeved that their yearly White House "Christmas card" didn't have the word "Christmas". Do they believe that there should be separate cards for the various religions (Hanuka, Kwanzaa, etc..). Or it should be just a Christmas card to all, end of story?

Yesterday bush participated in a menorah lighting ceremony:

President George W. Bush participates in the Menorah lighting at the White House with Rabbi Joshua Skoff and members of the Skoff family, Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005, prior to the annual White House Hanukkah reception.

How do the WOC "warriors" feel about these kind of ceremonies?

1. Ignorant backlash from the majority. That's all it is.

2. Repeat after me: There is no war on Christmas
The majority of people just do not care. The neocon fundies are having a hissy because no one is paying attention to them so like a spoiled child they throw a tantrum.:eyes:

3. It's the new "moral" distraction
The RW needs something like gay marriage, violent video games or flag burning to distract attention away from their corruption and incompetence. They can rely on shark attacks, pretty blonde girls disappearing, little Timmy falling into the well to help, but they need something to fall back on when those "events" don't happen on their schedule.

4. Misdirection...get the fools so stirred up by "Christmas" that they forget
Iraq, Frist, Delay, Downing Street Minutes, the war on the poor, the endless Repuke scandal machine, and so forth. By the way, isn't that a nice portrait of Calvin Coolidge? Probably one one B*shit's big role models.

9. see, calling those that care about this silliness 'fools' is precisely...
...what conservative strategists are banking on. These myriad fake issues that are foisted upon the public only have one purpose: to paint liberals as outside the mainstream.

There are people who genuinely dislike the prevalence of 'Happy Holidays.' Fine, whatever. It's absolutely the definition of silliness to take a political stand on this issue, because you are alienating folks that otherwise might agree with you on issues that really matter.

The only appropriate response to this whole wackiness is an eye roll and a 'whatever.'

6. the key to this 'debate' is not to get sucked in
this whole fake outrage over the 'holiday' vs 'Christmas' is invented by the Heritage Foundation to lay the seeds of conservative ideology in the minds of otherwise apolitical citizens.

This whole inanity is aimed at getting a rise out of liberals in order to paint us as the ones outside the mainstream. But that only works if we take the bait, and frankly, I don't know why anyone with half a brain would. The whole thing is utterly silly.

They are kicking our ass up and down the street in the Culture War because we continue to take up their invented bait, and take the national focus off shit that really matters.

8. It's Because WAAAAAA, We Can't Have Our Way All The Time, Every Time!!
That's it, in a nutshell.
They want to impose Christianity on everyone else...or, at least, their version of "Christianity," anyway.

When I look at someone, I don't know if they are pagan...or maybe they are Jewish and would rather hear "Happy Hanukkah" and might be insulted by "Merry Christmas."

Generally, I try to use the holiday of choice of the person I am addressing, if known, else I use Happy Holidays, so as to include everyone, and insult no-one.

If I KNOW I'm speaking to a Jew, I'll say Happy Hanukkah. If I KNOW I am speaking to a Christian, I'll say Merry Christmas. If I DON'T KNOW...then I tend to say Happy holidays. And if they don't like it they can kiss my ass.

11. Like others have said, it's a make believe war made up BECAUSE
it's something the RW nutjobs know they can win. (And with all their shit raining down on their own heads these days, they DESPERATELY need to win at SOMETHING. So they started to shadowbox a nonexistent antagonist, the Librul Christmas-Killers).

Nobody ever failed to win in a fistfight with a strawman--although with Bush at the helm I'd give them no better than even odds.
