3. Ugh
Cross comes off pretty elitist about his comedy/audience. The "if you don't get it, you're stupid" thing that some comdians get when they are oh so serious about their art.

Pity, I thought he was a little more down to earth with a very twisted sense of humor.

10. But that isn't what he said
It's me, David Cross. Recently I was shooting something for my friends at "Wonder Showzen" (the funniest, most subversive comedy on American T.V. at the moment)

... that's a quick (and smart) plug. He called them "my friends", not "REAL comics".

4. it is worth the read.
Though it seems sad that anyone should have to put out any effort to answer anyone who calls themselves Larry the Cable Guy.

5. I read the whole thing and didn't fart once.
David is my favorite member of the Blue Man Group.

As for "Larry the Cable Guy", he ain't blue collar. Roseanne, now SHE and Dan was true blue collar. The "Larry" character is just one of the worlds less pleasant and lower functioning fartards.

As for that show Larry crawls around on: Blue Collar Comedy my gay ass. It's just HeeHaw with a shiny new pick-up, a roof that don't leak and $2,000 in the bank.

But now I done-git-went and insulted Hee-Haw, which had enough honesty in it to actually be funny every now and again. My bad.

25. I'm gonna miss AD too. You just knew it was doomed when FOX
started shunting it around.

Do you think there's any chance someone else will pick it up?

I can't imagine that Comedy Central would have the kind of dough required to pay the crew.

Arrested Development is too damn good to fade away like this.

26. My biggest hope is that HBO picks it up...
I've come to dislike almost all shows of the sitcom-genre (because of their inherent predictability), with the exception of AD. Just as Seinfeld resurrected sitcoms in the 90's, AD, if given a fighting chance and not moved from time-slot to time-slot, making it increasingly difficult to find, would've done the same in this decade.

34. yeah, Larry is a moron...
the only guy i think is remotely funny on the blue comedy tour thing, is Ron White...:) I like his bit on hating garth brooks...:)

I do agree, the last family i saw on tv that remotely was blue collar, was the Roseanne show...and to an extent the Kents, on Smallville, who are always in finacnial trouble...which, is a big part of blue collar life it seems..(at least in my exp)...:)

36. Oh, yeah. "Keeping your head above water."
And actually striving to do better than that.

I've never seen "Smallville".

The Bundy's (Married With Children) were blue-collar, if very broadly drawn. That was some brilliant "low-brow" humor there. IMO

37. Yeah, i forgot about Al Bundy, shame on me!...:)
Smallville is good, its a superman show, about his coming of age, but his parents, the Kents are always in financial trouble and what nots....:) Its not a bad show, but i'm totally biased because I like superman...:)

12. Great read, thanks!
I didn't really know much about "The Cable Guy's" shtick, and really didn't want to know after hearing a few seconds of his ridiculously fake and obnoxious accent and seeing the incredibly inane "get r done" catch-phrase on numerous pickup trucks here in South-Central PA (usually with accompanying */Cheney stickers.) I had no idea blatant racism and homophobia are part of his act, although it certainly doesn't surprise me. The David Cross letter is great.

13. Larry is funny, but he can stick his right wing bullsh*t right up his ass
He's funny all right, but he's also an avenue to bring more right wing bullsh*t into our homes. He goes off on the Dixie Chicks, Rosie O'Donnell. Go f*ck yourself Larry. Be funny, but don't be an ass. And speaking of asses, please cram that confederate flag guitar up your ass, with the rest of your right wing bullsh*t.
Now, I'll go read the article.

That pretty much summed it up.

But, what it comes down to, as with most of them, is plain $$$$$. 'Larry' is doing this for $$$$$$. It's not political to him.

19. i saw that jack ass....
larry the cable guy. my wife and some of her co-workers got tickets and at the time i really didn't know who he was. his act was exactly as david cross describes it, one juvenile joke after another.....lots of fart jokes and fat chick jokes, a whole lot of anti gay and racial humor. at the very end of the show, the last words he screamed into the microphone were "if any 'yall ever vote for that bitch hillary clinton, 'yall can kiss my ass".....

20. Wow, I'm not the only one
who doesn't care for the "humor" of Larry the Cable Guy. I always thought he sounded like an idiot. I've always had trouble understanding a damn word he had to say. At least Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall and Ron White spoke clear enough English to be understood.

I posted this in entertainment an hour before you did.

Cross is a comic genius... although I still can't help but love his Just Shoot Me character. Chicken pot chicken pot ckicken pot PIE! Also loved his Jeepers Creepers Superstar from Mr Show.
If you haven't seen it, check out Run Ronnie Run... freaking hilarious!

Underlined, exclamation point. Now, let's see, who's the best leftofcenter comedian with American values and intellectual pride...Seinfeld used to carry the torch for us...but he wore himself out. We need a new standard bearer, pronto !

I admit I didn't follow his act that closely in his hayday (I wasn't even in highschool yet) but he just seems like the vanguard non-threatening observational humorist. With any political content being a brief occasional undertone at most.

Edited on Thu Dec-08-05 05:12 PM by EVDebs
the vanguard of humor isn't exactly Ron White or Jeff Foxworthy either, not that there's anything wrong with that !

So who do YOU nominate as the 'vanguard' of political hip with-it humour ? eh wiseguy ? (excuse my absense of intellectual pride).

38. First of all, I was talking about during Seinfelds day, before Cross's day
which was like mid-90's I think most can agree, and during that time the vanguard political comic was probably either STILL Carlin, or perhaps Bill Maher, even though I'm not sure how popular Politically Incorrect was in it's infancy, or how popular he was right before that.
