Hecklers Cause Coulter to Cut UConn Speech
By SHELLEY K. WONG, Associated Press Writer
3 minutes ago

STORRS, Conn. - Conservative columnist Ann Coulter gave up trying to finish a speech at the University of Connecticut on Wednesday night when boos and jeers from the audience became overwhelming.

Coulter cut off the talk after 15 minutes and instead held a half-hour question-and-answer session.

"I love to engage in repartee with people who are stupider than I am," Coulter told the 2,600 people at Jorgensen Auditorium.

Coulter's appearance prompted protests from several groups, including Students Against Hate and the Puerto Rican/Latin American Cultural Center. They criticized her for spreading a message of hate and intolerance.

I posted this earlier in another thread. It seems there's a lot of this going around, especially among self proclaimed conservatives: http://www.lingsoft.fi/~reriksso/competence.html

12. I believe in freedom of speech, and this is a disgrace.
Why act like animals just because she does? Shes' crass, rude, always wrong, but she still has a right to speech. It's juvenile to disrupt her. Let her speak, and let people disagree. Trying to stifle dialogue is a fascist tactic, one that we should fight against, not engage in.

It's not an excuse or justification to say "She does it". Coulter says outrageous things. Great. There are people on the right who would say the same about people on the left. And if Mike Malloy gave a speech, and people roundly booed him to the point that he couldn't speak, or threw pies at him, it would be condemned here.

You have to ask yourself if you support freedom, or just freedom for those with whom you disagree. If you support civility, or just civility towards those you respect.

Make no mistake. The intent is to silent her, and that is plain wrong. No matter what she says. Let her be judged and forgotten for the content of her words, we don't need to employ republican tactics against those we disagree with. There is always a Q and A session. That's an appropriate time to engage.

If they took off their clothes and sang "We love you Annie"

26. Idiotic
Sure, she has a right to speak. Everyone does.

But the moment she gets PAID to speak, she needs to be more responsible in what she says. She lies constantly, misrepresents things, and lobs insults with no factual backing.

If my college hired her to speak, you bet I'd help boo her off the stage. She shouldn't be getting paid to do the crap she does. And just as its her right to speak, its my right to boo.

61. Exactly! She has made hate speech a commercial enterprise.
She's not just voicing an opinion she's selling a product. And if you don't like what she's peddling you have the right to protest. You have the right to harass her and make her take her business elsewhere. It's no different than a consumer group picketing an unethical business.

just because she didn't run away but stuck it out and even did a question answer session. Dear Leader would never do that, but then he would have made sure the audience was full of hand-picked followers.

So as much as I loathe her she did better than some righties would have done. And at least our side got a chance to tell her what we think even if she did call us stupid.

....she is very educated and must know the truth.
Ann has an emotional problem. She boasted of her free publicity with Tweety last week......she said it...that is her need.....and boasted of her 4 best selling books$$$$$$$$$$$ She is laughing about it. She loves being outrageous.SHE HAS AN EXCESSIVE NEED FOR ATTENTION!!!!!...ANY ATTENTION.....and this is the pathetic way she has been able to achieve it.
She has chosen to use the word 'repartee" not discourse
Does she see herself as "FAST WIT"....I think that is what she does and she is clever to NOT discuss facts and spews unrelated facts all the time....she does not debate but throws off the debate with "fast wit"....ie: "repartee"
I wish everyone would ignore her( including me) but her "character" is sooooo over the top , it intrigues.Unfortunately it hurts as well because the hatred and lies are over the top yet heard by many who believe it to be true....!

It's just like when the Nazis show up for their rallies. You can't outlaw speech, but you can sure as heck show up in large numbers and shout them down. That's free speech too. That's the way it works. These people have absolutely nothing worthwhile to say and are destroying our country. We've given them way too much "free speech" latitude for way too long.

105. They DID, it DOES
That's the whole point. That is what they do all the time.

Assholes like Ann Coulter and O'Reilly have been dealt with through public opinion forever. It's when they aren't that they grow. Back in the 80's, when Limbaugh first came on the scene, we thought he'd disappear because nobody could be stupid enough to believe anything he said. He wss FUNNY. Once in a while he'd say some cute little thing about PC and there was a collective national teeheehee. And that was it.

Falwell, Robertson? Who knew they'd become more looney than the Birchers and actually influential???

They have a right to free speech, just like the Nazis and the KKK. But we have a right to show up and shout 'em down too.

I guess it's ok to act like an animal instead of a human. I guess reasoned response has no place in our soicety. It's better to shout and scream then to allow others to talk. If the message is offensive, we should prevent others from hearing it. WE have that right!

We also have the right to crap our pants.

It is the only moral and decent response to the first wrong. I am waiting and waiting for the day that some American, somewhere, stands up in the middle of a Bush lie-a-thon and just says BULLSHIT and demands to ask his or her President questions. Your belief in reason and mannered society is why he gets away with his shit.

That aside, agree to disagree. I don't believe in shouting down people and in essence preventing them from talking, you do. And calling Bullshit on the president is different from just making noise and preventing him from speaking. In fact, your idea of calling bullshit is a good, nay, great one, and I would love to watch a citizen hold the president accountable and ask him some tough questions. I guess it's my love of discourse and debate. Maybe that's why part of me dies when I watch some people fight behave like idiots around someone as insignificant as Ann Coulter. But if screaming like a monkey floats your boat, scream on.

I don't follow your logic, wixomblues.

When one person stands to shout B/S to Prez, they get hauled away and those around him titter in embarrassment so they don't get hauled away too. In fact, the Prez's audience is vetted, to the extent that he seems to prefer speaking only to troops now. Citizens who aren't donors can't seem to get an audience.

When enough people stand up to shout B/S to Prez, it's the scenario Ann Coulter just faced.

How can you imagine our Prez acting in the same polite manner you prescribe to his dissentors, when he's shown time/again for years to be intolerant of any questions not posed by gay hookers?

62. Coulter's free speech (actually she was paid handsomely)
needs to be sacredly protected but not the free speech of the college students? Nope, sorry, they didn't want to listen to her bullshit. She was paid, whether they listened raptly or told her what they thought of her, which they chose to do in the spirit of, you got it, free speech. Democracy in action, baby.

She says this is the typical response of her audiences. I think that would constitute a clue by four, wouldn't you? But again, she gets paid for her hate speech and I support her right to speak as long as she can speak over my loud objecting boos. That's how those of us not on stage express that we believe her swill to be hate spewing bullshit and quite stinky bullshit at that.

I would have booed Hitler off the stage too. He needed more booing off the stage. So does she. They are of the same ilk, these fascist worms.

100. Not at all.
Protest all you want. I am a tireless advocate of free speech, I have been all my life. You'll see a lot of my posts recently on the whole videogame issue. I get really irritated when anyone, and I mean anyone, is censored or silenced. I think the tactics used by people against Coulter are unapropriate, and I stated my reasons above.

As for the "Hitler would execute people", that comment was referring to the ridiculous comparisons between Ann and Hitler. People were saying that they would boo hitler if he gave a speech, my point being that Hitler was not on the college lecture circuit and pretty much did away with a free press. Ann is not Hitler, or anyone else. She's a pundit that says rude, overblown things about Democrats.

I think it's a shame that we can't let people express ideas, even ones we disagree with. And yes, people can always boo and disrupt someone. In this case, it elevates her, and gives her much more power then she has. It's better to let someone speak, and disagree with it, then to silence them completly.

People who compare her to Hitler, or feel that herwords are so dangerous that she needs to be silenced, or think that shouting someone down to prevent them from being hear is free speech are just plain dumb. The first amendment is designed to protect your right to express ideas. It's not designed to use one word, in this case, the word boo, to prevent someone elses speech from being heard.

79. not so sure...
Does Mike Malloy advocate the mass murder of Liberals, introduction of an American caste system, and other Hate-filled whoremongery? I think what you're truly discussing is courtesy, not free speech. If those students interrupted her by using their voices, why isn't their speech protected? They pay to go to that University, Coulter got paid to give that speech. If i was a student there i'd be pissed off enough to "disrupt" her speech. Besides what do you think Coulter, Olielly, Tweety, and the others do on their shows and in their segments? They shout everyone down, they interrupt, they displace intent, etc. Not practices that conform to common courtesy, but at this point i think people have been feeling the need to move past niceties. And really who can blame them? I'd be interested to hear WHAT these protesters shouted... at what point during the speech they started (were they calling her on a lie?) and/or whether the students issued a statement or tried to stop her from coming to the school to begin with. As for the Q and A... those sessions are only actually helpful/rewarding when the presenter is actually interested in "answering" questions. I'm not sure i've ever heard her give a straight answer, so IMO a Q & A with Coulter is pointless.

102. The KKK on the college lecture circuit?
If, for some reason, the college booked the KKK to give a speech, indoors, as part of a series of lectures, I would be surprised. I would defend their right to speak though. Now, as for the student fees, of course the students have a right to protest the use of the money. You can protest anything you want. These students were not protesting the use of student fees when they yell so loud she can't speak. Coulter didn't spend their money. If they want to protest the fees, take it up with the university.

Think of this as a slippery slope. or for example, look at Cindy Sheehan. I'm sure we can all agree that people who suppport Coulter are not going to support Sheehan. And vice versa. Would it have been as appropriate for students to disrupt Sheehan? You can always find people who believe in something passionaetly, and as rabid as people are twoards Coulter, you can find the same fanatical dislike of Sheehan.

SO, the arguments that this is justified, would it be justified if it was someone you supported? Or is there a double standard?

The ACLU defended Nazi's right to speak. Our country was founded in order for people to live freely. And nothing is moer important then that then the first amendment.

There are people on both sides of the spectrum who would like to silence those who disagree with them. And they are all wrong.

158. They're not equal.
Coulter has a platform to spew her bile. Those students don't. Coulter can always have the last word, because of her access to pundit shows. They don't. Public figures are fair game because they have infinitely more access to get their POVs out than standard humans, thus the rules for them are different. She has media privelege, they don't.

Nobody suppressed her freedom of speech. They shouted her down because she insulted them. Once that happens, she gave up any right to be heard. Nobody should have to be quiet and put up with that, just because of some lofty notion of the first amendment that our vocal opponents have a right to demonize us. If she was hauled off to jail for saying these things, then you would have an argument. She has a right to spew bile, they have a right to shout her down for it. No government was involved, so the First Amendment doesn't apply here.

No, people on both sides don't do what she does, and you know it.

160. Ok, yeah, sure, whatever.
You keep framing this debate with different fact and justifications. This is the first I'm hearing that the students shouted her down because she insulted them. After watching the tape, it looked like they were yelling from the beginning, and she responded to people that were yelling at her. Not that it matters.

Of course the students have a right to shout her down....I guess. I never said they didn't. I said it was rude, inappropriate, and infringed on her rights to speak, and the intent was to prevent her from being heard. I think we can agree that they didn't want her to be heard. They were not conversing with her, rather, they were chanting and booing. And as far as them having a right, it seems like that could be considered disorderly conduct. But that's neither here nor there.

My point, which you disagree with, is that people shouldn't behave the way the students did, towards anyone. It's unproductive, and unamerican, in my opinion. But, you disagree, and we can have a healthy exchange on this board. Fun for all.

I'm not sure why her being a media pundit justifies them yelling at her, or gives anyone equal time. If people want to become media pundits, go for it. Apparently, after a few best selling books, you get the shot.

As far as people on both sides doing it, well, both do. People on the left say hateful things about people on the right, and are viewed just as negatively as people view Coulter. If you want examples of this sort of thing, look closely at Franken, Malloy, and Howard Dean. Although they have their own reasons, motivations, and justifications, all hurl insults at people on the right on a fairly regular basis. Franken loves speaking in hyperbole, and people on the right love to pretend he's being serious; just like Coulter. I know COulter has said outrageous, offensive things, but so have people you agree with. Outrage is a choice, and a waste of time. But don't pretend that the left is above human nature. And besides, humor is a powerful tool. I love Franken, and I wish Dean was president. 151. Everyone has a right to free speech, the students included.
However, only a moran, moron, or any assortment of low intelligence, furrowed browed sentient beings understand free speech to encompass an absolute time line that necessitates at the expense of clarity that all parties interested in exercising their right to speak do so at the same time.

Sorry, but she has it coming.

If you are a liberal, she wants you dead.

If you are a woman, she thinks you should lose the right to vote....

I could go on and on and on and on and on and on with all of the vile words this woman has said.

If an audience likes you, they become disruptively loud with their applause.

If they hate you, they become disruptively loud with insults. She puts herself on the stage to be judged.

And so she has been.

113. Honestly my friend, I don't have cablle and I haven't seen
Coulter in years, since she was a regular on Maher's old show.

But I have been a talk show host myself and I still occasionally play music on stage and I'm sayin' that the audience rules.

If they like you, they can drown you out with screams of adoration. If they don't, well, they can drown you out with a disparaging display of noise.

She chooses to put herself out there, and she is paid handsomely to run her ignorant mouth. If she can't take the heat, she should shut the hell up. No one forces her to reveal her mental illness to the world.

only to watch as they are drowned out by bigmouths on the right. But they host the shows, and there's not much I can do to shut them up so I can hear the Dems say anything.

This is the STUDENTS' school. THEIR money paid for this psycopath to speak. If they want to drown her out at their school, more power to them. Freedom of speech works both ways.

And most members keep a low profile.

My show of course was named after me, and I personally don't give out my name over the internet. You MAY be Oscar Willis from Wixom, MI or you may REALLY by Joe Dickhead from OshKosh, Illinois. I really don't know, do I?

Right now, I could namedrop the people I worked with ( as producer and board op) and you would recognize the names, but my point was not "woohoo, look at me, I was on the radio" my point was, if you put yourself in front of an AUDIENCE, that audience can make all the noise they want. You asked them to view your performance: YOU deal with the instant reviews.

Now, your obsession with me is certainly flattering and frightening, but doesn't seem to indicate you got my point.

That's the charge tacked on to tuition that goes for upkeep of the student center, etc.

If she was, in fact, paid out of student fees, I'd say the protesters had an extra incentive to speak up. Every year, college gets more expensive. Those student fees would have been better spent, say, for janitorial raises.

Either way, the last person to ask would seem to be Angry Annie

In a series of studies, Kruger and Dunning tested their theory of incompetence. They found that subjects who scored in the lowest quartile on tests of logic, English grammar and humor were also the most likely to ``grossly overestimate'' how well they had performed.

42. That's some study!
Even when faced with evidence to the contrary ...

Unlike unskilled counterparts, the most able subjects in the study, Kruger and Dunning found, were likely to underestimate their competence. The researchers attributed this to the fact that, in the absence of information about how others were doing, highly competent subjects assumed that others were performing as well as they were -- a phenomenon psychologists term the “false consensus effect.''

When high-scoring subjects were asked to “grade'' the grammar tests of their peers, however, they quickly revised their evaluations of their own performance. In contrast, the self-assessments of those who scored badly themselves were unaffected by the experience of grading others; some subjects even further inflated their estimates of their own abilities.

“Incompetent individuals were less able to recognize competence in others," the researchers concluded.

NOW, I understand the phenomenon of Faux News viewership.

Boxer would make a good candidate for the Dems because "she's a woman and she's learning disabled?" Well, hey, I'm a woman and I'm learning disabled, as are millions of other intelligent, productive Americans, and we'd all make far better candidates than any of the hateful, cruel, bile-filled repubs COMBINED!

Goddamn, how dare she say that? How fucking DARE she say that! Does she even have a fucking clue at all about learning disabilities? Did she realize she was probably insulting at least a third of her audience, including the repuke students?

I've had to deal with the problems caused by my learning disability every single fucking day of my life, and I've learned to deal with it, developed compensating mechanisms, and managed to prove my college "you really will not be successful at working most jobs, you should face that reality" counselors wrong with this new job I left my home and son and family and friends for and that people were worried I wouldn't do well at, like too many of my other jobs. I've stuck with it through the years and become a productive, contributing member of society. And many others with learning disabilities have faced the same trials and come through the fire. Again, how FUCKING DARE SHE!

Oh, and Annie babe-learning disabled is NOT the equivalent of learning "unabled" like your idiot Great Leader you're so itching to suck off, and two thirds of your repuke heroes. Those of us with such disabilities have average to above average intelligence, some with even genius level. Like, say, Einstein and Churchill, just to name two of the endless list of notables with learning disabilities. So a hearty FUCK YOU and FUCK OFF and take your fucking hateful nazi garbage off to some deserted island where you can dream all day of sucking off your beloved Great Leader, and practice that fucking nazi salute you're so itching to publicly display. And take all your repuke buddies with you and leave the rest of us the hell alone, 'kay?

Sorry for the extra use of "French", people, but that sometimes happens when I'm really, really, really pissed off.

...note the make-up is heavier than usual too- perhaps to cover up paleness?

I'm no Dr. Frist- but she does not look well. At the least, she could use a milk-shake & a cheeseburger.

We should pity her.

When hecklers shout her down, it only makes her look like a martyr. She can then go on the TV circuit and whine about who liberals hate opposing viewpoints. Just pointing it out. Just because Coulter uses the same tactics, doesn't mean we should do the same.

there was a thread at Something Awful about mAnn coming to speak there, and there were a few suggestions on things to do to her. Looks like they just went with the straight up booing.

EDIT: There was one suggestion I thought was particularly funny--someone suggested to the UConn kids that one of the men should stand up in the audience and ask her a normal question, but have his **** hanging out of his pants, and as he talks, it, uh, "stands up."

123. Coulter: "Frankly, I'm not a big fan of the First Amendment."
She also criticized the media for being liberal and Democrats for whining about their rights under the First Amendment.

"They're always accusing us of repressing their speech," she said. "I say let's do it. Let's repress them."

She later added, "Frankly, I'm not a big fan of the First Amendment."

Her statements received applause, and many attendees said they enjoyed her speech, but some added that they think she's somewhat extreme.

126. Some wisdom from Ann Coulter:
"We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity. We weren't punctilious about locating and punishing only Hitler and his top officers. We carpet-bombed German cities; we killed civilians. That's war. And this is war."

"I take the biblical idea. God gave us the earth...We have dominion over the plants, the animals, the trees... God says, 'Earth is yours. Take it. Rape it. It's yours.'"

"I love Texas Republicans! They're these beautiful women, they're so great-looking, they're completely loaded. They're dripping in this gorgeous jewelry, they're really funny and sarcastic and smart. Americans are so cool, and they're such parochial idiots here in New York."

"Cheney is my ideal man. Because he's solid. He's funny. He's very handsome. He was a football player. People don't think about him as the glamour type because he's a serious person, he wears glasses, he's lost his hair. But he's a very handsome man. And you cannot imagine him losing his temper, which I find extremely sexy. Men who get upset and lose their tempers and claim to be sensitive males: talk about girly boys. No, there's a reason hurricanes are named after women and homosexual men, it's one of our little methods of social control. We're supposed to fly off the handle."

"My only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times Building."

"Taxes are like abortion, and not just because both are grotesque procedures supported by Democrats."

“If Giuliani wants to have a national ambition, and I’m a big fan of his, he’s going to have to become pro-life if he wants to run for president. No one ever believed he was pro-choice anyway - he’s a Catholic from Queens... Americans understand that Manhattan is the Soviet Union.”

"Kwanzaa itself is a lunatic blend of schmaltzy '60s rhetoric, black racism and Marxism. Indeed, the seven 'principles'of Kwanzaa praise collectivism in every possible arena of life – economics, work, personality, even litter removal."

"When you look at Pat Robertson’s positions, they are really quite moderate positions, as one would expect from a Yale Law School graduate."

"We need to execute people like John Walker in order to physically intimidate liberals, by making them realize that they can be killed too."

"The problem with women voting -- and your Communists will back me up on this -- is that, you know, women have no capacity to understand how money is earned. They have a lot of ideas on how to spend it. And when they take these polls, it's always more money on education, more money on child care, more money on day care."

"The thing I like about Bush is I think he hates liberals."

"Let's say I go out every night, I meet a guy and have sex with him. Good for me. I'm not married."

"If you don't hate Clinton and the people who labored to keep him in office, you don't love your country."

To a disabled Vietnam vet: "People like you caused us to lose that war."

"I am emboldened by my looks to say things Republican men wouldn't."

"I think there should be a literacy test and a poll tax for people to vote."

"My libertarian friends are probably getting a little upset now but I think that's because they never appreciate the benefits of local fascism."

141. The UConn College Republicans invited Coulter
The UConn College Republicans invited Coulter as part of their mission to bring conservative speakers to the University of Connecticut and to promote conservative propoganda to campus. The student who chiefly helped bring Coulter to campus provoked outrage among her fellow students because she was both a member of the College Republicans who abused her position as a high-ranking member of the student government. Sane students on campus warned that Coulter is hateful and correctly predicted she would attempt to marginalize certain student groups. An editorial in the Daily Campus student newspaper denounced the student government's vote to bring such a creep to campus using student fees. Tom Gaffey, editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, said "it's not that she's a Republican; it's her reputation as a hate promoter. . . . Can't we bring a more intelligent speaker to campus? Can't we spend our money more wisely?"
