The so called Liberal War On Christmas
Edited on Thu Dec-08-05 11:51 AM by RGBolen
This has to be the biggest load of crap right wingers have ever come up with. As far as the right wing evangelicals it’s probably been a brilliant fund raising scheme.

Let’s look at the greetings at retail outlets. Why would a store have a policy on what employees say in a greeting? Because they play to the fear of offending anyone. I am a Christian I celebrate Christmas, I tell people Merry Christmas. I’m sure I have said it to atheists, I am sure I have said it to Jews as well and to people of other beliefs. I have business with a company that is owned by and the employees are primarily of Indian descent, I have said Merry Christmas to many of them, it’s a good bet that some are not Christian. So far, I have not had anyone begin to jump up and down and scream at me because I have uttered words that reference an event that does not have a religious significance to them. Like I said I have said this while conducting business, if someone were to be offended, I would sincerely apologize and would think everything would be ok. Retail stores seem to think that at some point someone is going to be so offended if their employees are left to make their own greetings that there will be mass boycotts or media attention. It’s NOT liberals that have made these stores chose this it is their own silly fears of something that probably wouldn’t happen anyway.

It appears the right wing has found a good way to incorporate Christmas into their fund raising activities. I guess conservative Christians have discovered that any child that wants to carry a Bible to school can, and that unless they are disrupting the educational process students can pretty much pray anytime they want at a school. So maybe the "schools outlaw the bible," and "schools outlaw prayer" fund raising letters have dried up a bit. The next logical step is "schools or wal-mart or insert regional store name here outlaw Christmas." As fund raising from conservative Christians goes it’s a great choice, has the one thing you need to raise money, emotion. Ever get a DNC fund raising letter that doesn’t contain one of the following names, George Bush, Tom DeLay, Newt Gingrich, or Dick Cheney? Of course not they stir emotions in Democrats, that’s how you raise money.

The big news today on the issue I guess is the White House "Holiday Cards" that some right wing idiots got. A bit of a difference here, this is a government issued publication where there are constitutional issues involved. I do kind of laugh over this because I am sure that George and Laura send actual Christmas cards to friends and family, perhaps these idiots just weren’t on their list.

I would say what I think the right wing idiots should be doing to celebrate Christmas, but that is not their intentions so no reason to waste my time. I will just ignore their idiotic actions and join with liberal, conservative, and non-political Christians in helping to feed, cloth and provide Christmas gifts for those less fortunate than I. I do hope that some who got the fund raising letters see through this and join us this Christmas season in doing something that makes us proud of our faith.

What really makes me chuckle over this is the Christmas Blend coffee I am sipping right now, that I bought at Starbucks (100% Democrat donations per buyblue.org) prepared for me as "have yourself a merry little Christmas day" was playing, and as I looked at the CD of Christmas music they had for sale. I must have missed all the liberal protesters picketing the Starbucks, and somehow all the evil liberals must have missed my car when putting their war on Christmas fliers out. Some war huh?

1. O'Reilly even called Comedy Central "Secular Central" and went
on to show a clip of Samantha bee reporting on the holidays from 1 year ago.

3. Yes, was a great segment
A very pregnant Samantha Bee, wearing the same pink sweater but with a different fit from the one bashed by O'Reilly.

As mentioned in another thread - "upblowsing" and "downskirting?"

2. This is such total Bull Shit
I am a Progressive Liberal, ACLU, Progressive Club, walked precincts, manned phone banks, the whole 9 yards.

Faith wise I have one foot in Reform Judaism and the other foot in Unitarian-Universalist.

But - going back to my Active Duty Coast Guard Days (when I stood watches for my Christian ship mates during Christmas, Easter),
*I will be at the top of the Red Cross phone list for local disasters from 12/16 until 1/2/06, and
*I will also be volunteering at one of Bill Frist/HCA's local hospitals.

I wish these fundies would get off of this. As a Jewish person - I am a better Christian then the people selling those bracelets.

4. Conservative Christians came up with "Happy Holidays" a few decades ago
Back when it first became a popular saying, "Happy Holidays" was put into the lexicon by conservative Christians (CCs) back when they were actually Christian in their behavior.

Back in the day (the 50s or 60s?), these CCs got upset because there was so much commercialism associated with the period between Thanksgiving & Christmas that these CCs wanted to disassociate that most holy of Christian holidays with such crass commercialism. Since Thanksgiving, Hannukah & Kwanzaa are all around the same time frame, they came up with "Happy Holidays" as a way to disassociate just Christmas with our consumer culture...
