Anybody see Daryn Kagan's little smear piece on us "Christmas haters"
She had this "Christian" bookstore owner (who has nine kids) on who is promoting a wristband campaign saying Merry Christmas. Just some of this person's talking points are:

The war on Christmas is as evident as pornography on the Internet.

The separation between church and state is a myth.

Christmas is for the true followers of Christ

Isn't Ms. Kagan dating Rush Limbaugh? The final blow in this smear piece was Ms. Kagan pointedly saying Merry Christmas to the Borg-again Lady.

Where can I find a transcript? What's the best way to complain to CNN about this? Will it do any good?

1. the scariest thing
said was that there is no seperation between church and state and that Christmas is only for Christians (what kind? I'm sure this person has a list of "acceptible" churches-bet UU and Unity aren't on it.). This is the rantings of someone who wants to establish a theocracy, imho.

3. I'm sure the nation's retailers want to hear they want ONLY CHRISTIANS
to shop! THAT would really send a strong message..."Christmas is only for Christians! Everyone else stay out of the mall between Halloween and New Years Day!"

4. The "true followers of Christ", huh?
People who truly adhere to the spirit of Christ's teachings almost never get cameras pointed at them. And they'd never try use the Christmas celebration as a club to beat people with.

Q: What do you think about the War on Christmas?
A: I REJECT THE PREMISE OF YOUR QUESTION. THERE IS NO WAR ON CHRISTMAS.

DON'T DIGNIFY THIS BULLSHIT WITH A DEBATE. THERE IS NO DEBATE. THERE ARE ONLY REPUBLICANS TRYING TO CHANGE THE FUCKING SUBJECT.

REJECT THE PREMISE.

21. It is so transparent it is almost funny
when they start taxing churches I'll take Christian persecution seriously.

Is this argument what they call a strawman? I have only just learned that term...might not fit here 100%, tho.

Just coming up on the transcript page ...

"While we're on the subject of the holidays, there is a new colored bracelet, this one designed to save the phrase "Merry Christmas." We'll meet the woman behind the red and green. The second hour of CNN LIVE TODAY begins right now."

8. What a freakin' idiot
"The war on Christmas is as evident as pornography on the Internet."
And you would know about porn on the 'Net how, exactly?

"The separation between church and state is a myth."
Actually, it isn't. In fact the seperation of church and state was codified into US law with the 1797 Treaty of Tripoli, which was passed into law by both houses of Congress, and signed into law by John Adams. The relavent passage states "As the Government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion;". This section was either authored by George Washington or John Adams. This wording went through without a hitch or raising the ire of anybody. I hate it when fundies expound upon the very history that they never studied. The always get it wrong.

"Christmas is for the true followers of Christ" Well, d'uh, it is a Christian holiday. But it isn't exclusively for Christians either. It is also for those folks who worship Mithras and Sol Invictus, whom the Christians stole the date from, and it also coincides with winter celebrations of many other religious traditions.

But I think why this woman is really getting all up in arms about this non-issue is because she is using this faux outrage to fleece, err, sell the sheep here little wrist-band thingy, and the more outrage she can whip up, the more money she makes. Somehow extorting cash from the gullible doesn't seem to be very Christian to me.

13. Good points
I didn't know about the Treaty of Tripoli. That pretty much slaps down any argument by the fundies.

... oh, and by the way, Merry Yule and Happy Solstice everyone.

I'm guessing he's going far and above the 15%-20% retail profit margin.

She is his beard, his front. And as soon as she figures she is in a loveless, sexless relationship with a man who likes young boys, she'll be gone like all the other Mrs. Limbaughs:evilgrin:

where it concerns religious freedom? Not seperate enough for them? Even Jesus was for seperation of Church and State. "Render that which is Ceaser unto Ceaser and that which is God's unto God."

17. So he's been watching lots of porn, huh? Is it the "good" christian porn?
Yes, separation of church and state is getting to be more of a myth, but it's one of the basic premises of this country's government.

Fine, so Christmas is for the true followers of Christ. Does that mean that the rest of us have to be bombarded by it in the public realm too? Go ahead, pummel us with it socially, commercially and in every other sphere of life, but not with the endorsement of government. Is your belief so pathetically unsure that you have to have EVERYONE EVERYWHERE confirming your supernatural guess? Do others simply not deserve to exist? Would you tolerate the intrusiveness of other belief systems that you demand is your right to shove down the throat of others?

Happy winter solstice; Jesus was probably born in the spring.

18. Is this what the Repugs are running on now, Christmas?
Edited on Thu Dec-08-05 01:07 PM by Strawman
Let them eat Christmas cheer. Let them eat "the sanctity of marriage."

For Christ's sake, guys, create a few more net jobs already. It took four years to create one. You have to be the actual government now. Get some of those 9/11 commission grades up into the B minus range at least first then you can talk about Christmas.

First things first.

24. Every minute the "War on Christmas" is discussed on a news show....
--Is a minute they are NOT discussing the continuing carnage in Iraq.

--Is a minute they are NOT asking how well New Orleans is doing.

--Is a minute they are NOT reviewing the latest Republican Corruption Scandal.

Remember, children. Every time a Republican is indicted, an angel gets his wings!

25. That's right! That's right!
If anyone brings this up to me, I just laugh my ass off.

"Are you unable to attend your own Christian church, then? Is someone stopping you?"

"Has anyone acted offended if you said 'Merry Christmas?'"

"Is anyone preventing you from celebrating Christmas?"

If the answers are no, they can shut the fuck up.

Our soldiers and our fellow Americans are in a LIVING HELL, and someone else wants to sell cheap bracelets made in China to make it all go away.

What a sad, sad time in our nation's history...
