1. It makes passengers feel better about flying
Having worked airport security for a period of time I can tell you, airport security is all for show. It's a "feel good" thing.

to this day I can see a million ways around it.

7. somebody who is really good could pick out a bomb about 99.9% of the time
People like that don't stick around because the pay is nowhere near high enough. I made just barely above minimum wage when I did it years ago. I have the FAA test me a total of eight times (you don't know when they are coming through). They never got the test item past me, but I've seen them do it to a lot of others.

As soon as I found something that paid better, I left.

14. Well, they must be either idiots, or entirely self-absorbed,
because I NEVER "feel good" about going through a security check. In fact, I avoid them if it's at all possible.

12. Intersting you say that
Every day, the secuirty personnel are suppposed to calibrate the magnetometer. If not done correctly every day, there is a "hole" in the ability to properly detecet a metal device. something as small as a .22 caliber pistol can still make it through one of these devices by the right person with the right body capacitance. The way to do it is to move through the magnetometer in a diagonal fashion (ie. enter to the left side of the entrance and exit through the right side of the exit).

somebody is supposed to be watching people moving through the magnetometer and if they see somebody going through it this way, they are supposed to send them through again.

If you have some loose change or some keys the next time you go through one of these devices, and don't want to bother putting the metal in their little bowl, give this a shot. Most times you'll make it through.

I guess you could say, "sashaying" through security is a way to get around it. ;-)

9. Oh, and the flight yesterday originated in Columbia
which is not noted for picking up people who get on planes with things they shouldn't have.

15. Its about feeling good about flying. Really
The reality is that TSA cannot stop weapons or bombs from getting aboard.

Weapons can be fashioned from mundane items. We cant even keep weapons out of prisons.

Bomb material is not detected by metal detectors, and is easily carried on the body.

All that TSA can really do is shake down passengers and make everyone think that they are safe.

Nothing more.

16. This passenger changed planes. He had to go through the AP.
He and his wife flew in on a flight from Ecuador. They changed planes in Miami, therefore had to go through the terminal.

Ridicule the security process if you wish, but there is always the possibility of a bomb or anything else being hidden in the terminal and picked up during the plane change.

I think we all need to do a wait and see on this story. There's still a lot of conflicting info out there and it's going to take some time to shake out.

17. How many bombs have been found by TSA ?
Edited on Thu Dec-08-05 03:54 PM by Fescue4u
Sure they find guns all the time...mostly on people who forgot they had packed it.

They also find nail clippers and swiss army knives.

But how many news headlines have you read about bombs being found at the checkpoint? I've never heard of it happening.

No. They only time you hear about bombs on airplanes is after they blow up. Richard Reid being a notable exception and he was caught by fellow passengers.

TSA cannot stop bombs from getting on board.

18. Because THIS is how ineffective security checkpoints are:
"Recent tests of airport security to determine whether screeners would discover concealed guns, knives, and simulated bombs had failure rates comparable to tests done in the 1980s and 1990s, says Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.), who was briefed in April on the classified results. The earlier tests showed that screeners missed roughly 20 percent of the prohibited items at checkpoints and that screeners using X-ray machines to examine luggage missed 2 of every 3 bags carrying simulated explosives."
