Poll question: Irrespective of the recent shooting:
I've been trying to parse the posts I'm reading, and I'm curious:

How do you feel about law enforcement in general?

1. mostly fine, a few bad apples...
brother-in-law down in torrence calif was called to a domestic and when they got there they found a doped up 'dad' bashing a baby in a crib into a pulp beyond human recognition with a baseball bat; when they entered, 'the perp' had enough sense somehow :eyes: to understand the high moment beyond his clearly pernicious actions and simply dropped the bat & held up his hands behind his head with a strangely odd, teethy grin.

but they had to deal with the scene and not stuff this asshole as their emotions, and yes; perhaps 'simple sense' dictated at the time.

my brother-in-law resigned from the force shortly thereafter.

someone has to perform these functions for the betterment of this social-republic. what are anyone here presuming the alternative to be? chaos?

2. NYPD
Have know many. The stories they told are amazing. From throw down guns to sitting in a room with a 4 day old corpse strung up from the ceiling and not being able to even open a window until the corner arrives, to patrolling the Theater District in Times Square and falling asleep watching Broadway Shows undercover. It runs the gamut.

Not an easy life to say the least. No wonder there is so much "burn out".

3. you bet, HockeyMom, that's part of what i'm saying straight up!!
it's always lovely when you look up into a breezy blue sky w/puffy white clouds, and gum drops start raining down...but most every city has a 'shit city' inside of it somewhere, even if it may be hidden from view. and that might be the difference between their doing a good job and a poor one.

thanks for your post.

14. Try over Thanksgiving Dinner
(they invited us). The man was NYPD, his FATHER was NYPD, and his BROTHER was too. They all talked about their "work" over dinner. Plus, when we would sit around waiting for our daughters to come back from a dance or we were invited to BBQ's. We were very close friends of these people.

Husband also had a friend from HS too who was NYPD and we invited him and wife over several times. My husband's UNCLE was also NYPD, so he also had a lot of stories to tell us too.

NOT BAR TALK.

4. I appreciate and support the local cops. But you HAVE to watch them.
Anyone with a gun and power must be constrained by a vigilent public. A sane society demands it.

5. Some law enforcement agencies are worse than others.
But I voted "Mostly fine, a few bad apples."

Many are astonishingly fine, and a few are astonishingly rotten. Racists are among the worst.

6. Most police get paid lousy for a difficult job.
I have relatives who are police officiers who have to buy their own bullet prove vests if they actually want them to stop bullets.

10. There are fine men that are police officers
There are bad men who are police officers. Unfortunately the fine men have to protect the not-so-fine men or they all get painted with the same brush. Intellectually I understand it. Ethically I abhor it. I actually come from a LE/military family. My uncle is probably one of the most kind men I have ever met, I have no doubt he was fair when doing his police duties. Unfortunately I also believe he would have covered for bad apples.

I agree with most of the posters here about it being a difficult job that somebody has to do.

My problems are with their training and the "blue line."

I believe cops are trained to "take charge" when they come into a situation. The training they get is not complete, and I have seen cops come into situations, start ordering people around, and generally inflame an already bad situation. A little more diplomacy under certain circumstances would be very helpful. So, my complaint about their training, is they need to understand more about defusing a situation through diplomacy.

The "blue line." Anyone ever been arrested? How you're treated depends an awful lot on the arresting officer. My problem is that if you happen to be arrested by a scumbag, he can take you back to the police station and beat the living shit out of you in front of a dozen other cops; and none of them will back you; either to stop the beating or to testify as to what took place. The obvious evidence is the man who was arrested and sodomized with a night stick in a Brooklyn police station. But that's just a known example, the reality is that this type of treatment is pervasive; and the "good" cops do nothing to stop it.
