Last weekend on This American Life, they rean this story:
David and Goliath
Cambodia's the only poor country in the world that's agreed to follow strict labor practices in their clothing factories (eliminating sweatshops for workers like those pictured here). This makes their clothes more expensive. And since January first, because of changing trade laws, they've had to compete against giants like China that produce clothes more cheaply. Can their experiment in treating workers fairly survive?
http://www.thisamericanlife.org/This is a story about how the Clinton White House passed a law that gave Cambodia preferred trading status if they enacted some of the most progressive labor laws in the world. It worked. It really worked. Under Bush, the law lapsed and now Cambodia is suffering.
So, Cambodia is asking the US to do renew that law (which helps poor people in Cambodia AND in the US by not requiring US workers to compete down to the level of the lowest common denominator).
And guess who is supporting their cause? Barak Obama.
