Who is your favorite Republican?
I like Larry Johnson myself. Smart guy. Really knows his stuff, in and out.

I respect a lot of old-school Repubs too, the true statesman types. I have great respect for Eisenhower of course. I respect for Barry Goldwater, he was a man of integrity, I wouldn't say I agreed with him a lot, but I respect people with integrity. I'm beginning to come around to the freedom fries man himself, Walter Jones. He's a good honest man. I respect Brent Scowcroft a lot too. Richard Clarke is another one. Respect guys like Chuck Hagel and Dick Lugar on certain topics. Still wary of lots of stuff in their backgrounds and so on.

But, I might still say, Larry Johnson.

54. Not really. I don't think Abe would be a Republican in this party.
He was hardly a conservative. His administration changed everything and certainly not in a reactionary way.

I would love to see how conservatives would react if liberals nationwide and others against the war united by joining the Republican party. :grouphug:

11. I really have to say, that the only Republicans I liked were
my parents, but I think they were misled. They were honest in their beliefs, but misguided. As for the rest of them, nah. There was a time I could respect the difference but not anymore because they are really nothing more than a country club that wants to keep everyone out they don't like, except the staff who is necessary to do the work.

12. A Dead One
No, in all sincerity, I have to at least give some respect to my Republican Senator, Arlen Specter. He's not a neo-con, he's a noted thorn in the side of the neocons and extremists of his party, he's a moderate, an old-school Republican, and, he has at least earned my respect.

but, outside of Arlen, my answer "A Dead One" holds as my favorite Republican.

13. Has a Republican died recently?
That's him. My favorite.

Probably not the answer you were looking for, but each and every last stinking one of them is corrupt and filthy in some way or another. I saw footage today of some Republican Congressman from Tennessee giving a list of conservatives who said the war was a bad idea. But when push came to shove, he was right there at the Bush Rallies. No morality. No nothing. Screw 'em to death with a splintery baseball bat.

John McCain actually embraced Bush after his people ran a racist campaign against him with things like "Didja know McCain has a nigra baby?"

Anything that passes for honor in them is a sham to support the sick little corners of hate they inhabit.

For me, it's sort of like "Name your favorite fascist."

"Well, the SS had some really cool uniforms . . . and you could kill Jews in 'em and they didn't show the blood."

Sorry. Can't play.

21. you're only talking about elected people
So are you going to tell me Richard Clark fits into that same stereotype that you put out? No, I doubt that you would. Be wary of having too extreme of a view that it makes you hate anybody who is a Republican just because they are one. Lots of good people call themselves Republicans, many just don't know anybody. The ability to see things and think rationally is what seperates us from the people on the far-right. We're better than that. Just don't let all the bad stuff get to you too much. I used to be like that myself.

36. He also let the CIA run amok in Guatemala...
Under Ike, the U.S.replaced the freely elected government of Guatemala with another right-wing dictatorship that would again bend to UFCO's (United Fruit Company) will.

...The history of Guatemala since the Spanish conquest is one of continuous domination and repression. For a brief ten years from 1944 to 1954, Guatemala experienced the fresh air of democracy. However, with a right-wing dictatorship back in power, Guatemala was thrown back into the dark ages and the stage was set for the next 30 years of repression and killing. As part of their efforts in the coup, the CIA made a list of 70,000 "questionable individuals". During Guatemala's 36 year civil war that just came to an end this year (1996), the government often referred to this list originally put together by the CIA...

http://www.mayaparadise.com/ufc1e.htm

But at least Ike had the sense kiss the giant cooperate ass and effect regime change covertly.

44. warned of the military-industrial complex
for one thing. He's moderate compared to these guys nowadays. A pretty respectable guy, certainly not a perfect and not as good as most Dem presidents, if not all of them, but he had some merits.

Bill Clinton supported NAFTA, passed a shitty welfare reform bill, did more talking on minority issues than actual acting, but he was still pretty solid all around. Can't all be perfect.

Then you have guys like Bush who is a special kind of bad. Where Eisenhower may have sucked on some things, Bush is detrimental on pretty much everything. Plus the guy could fuck up a cup of coffee too.

As governor of my state, he got land use laws passed, got the nation's first bottle bill passed, and staged the only state-sponsored rock festival in history. He called for Nixon's resignation, too. Damn good Republican, he was.
