I would like to think that in that situation, I would have aimed for his knees or legs or arms to stop him, cause pain, but leave him alive so he could be questioned. What if he had been a terrorist, wouldn't we have wanted to talk with him? (btw, I do mean talk not torture).

So, how many mentally ill people are we going to shoot and kill before the counter-terrorist specialists around the world reconsider this response? This is the second one I have heard of. Sheesh.

2. From what I've read, I believe I would have
It is sad there is not another method at present. But evidently, according to accounts, he said over and over he had a bomb in the bag. That's what those guys are there to deal with.

4. The problem with this question is "Based on what was known at the time"
Reports are now coming out he never said he had a bomb, his wife was screaming that he was sick or mentally ill. So what did the Marshals really know at the time? We probably will never learn the truth.

19. True
If they had worded it "based on reading news and accounts later reported, and from researching political blogs, would you have taken the shot?"

Would have produced a different result, I agree.

5. under what circumstances ?
the circumstances are not clear, more and more tends to show there weren't even the word "bomb" involved...

all this reminds me of the classical attitude "shoot first, ask then"

same kind of stuff like the shooting of the Italian reporter in Iraq. What strikes me is that other countries are normally not that trigger-happy. And statistics shows that no more Europen soldiers are killed, no more bombs explode because they don't shoot the first car coming too near. On the contrary very few innocents are killed and the civilians accept more the presence of those soldiers...

17. This whole, He screamed he had a bomb thing is stupid
Do you really think a terrorist would scream I have a bomb then run around for 5 minutes without setting it off? From what Randi said yesterday they actually had the guy sitting down in first class and were going to question him, when he grabbed the bag and ran. If this is true then the whole argument is moot...

18. That's exactly right. No real terrorist is going to announce he's ...
got a bomb. When someone starts shouting for all the world to hear he's got a bomb that ought to tip you off that he's not playing with a full deck.
