FBI improperly spied on peaceful rallies, ACLU says

By Karen Abbott, Rocky Mountain News
December 8, 2005

The American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado said it will release documents today that show FBI agents improperly spied on peaceful protesters in Colorado Springs in the name of combating terrorism.

"These documents are further confirmation of our contention that the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force is wasting resources and threatening First Amendment rights by equating nonviolent protest with what it calls domestic terrorism," said Mark Silverstein, ACLU legal director in Colorado.

FBI spokeswoman Monique Kelso said the FBI only investigates or watches people when it has credible information that a crime may be committed, will be committed or has been committed.

The newly released documents, to be posted on the ACLU's Web site at www.aclu-co.org, were obtained by the organization through the federal Freedom of Information Act.

1. FYI...
Since I've been coming to this board I get hit by the DoD regularly. I think it sucks butt. I have no doubt they are spying or attempting to spy on us, heck I have proof they are attempting to scan my computer - and only when I am viewing or have viewed this message board.

7. FBI has a history of spying on peaceful folks
did it during Viet Nam, so this doesn't surprise me now. Hmmmm....if they check out this computer, they'll find I stream AAR, go to yahoo mail, and some fan sites as well as here.

3. Remember what happened to Peace Fresno
Fatherland Security sent one of the Fresno sheriff's deputies to infiltrate Peace Fresno until he was killed in a motorcycle accident.

Hi, Agent Mike! :hi:

6. They are republicans. They don't need to follow the law
They shred any documentation that shows that they are breaking the law by violating our civil rights.

8. Whoa, the sun is shining! On a clear day!
Sorry, I shouldn't be sarcastic, but the FBI has had peace and other demonstrators under surveillance ever since the FBI was formed. Yes it is illegal, yes they should be busted for it, but sadly that probably isn't going to happen without a major societal shift, especially in this day and age.

I applaud the ACLU for its actions and will continue to donate to them in order that they can do so. But really, this isn't news. Hell, judging from how many times I've been filmed in marches over the years, the FBI probably has a feature length film on me by now, Mad Hound, from child to middle age.
