Rumors that liberman may be appointed sec of defense
On raw Story

Frankly, I don't believe it, but if it did happen it would be an opportunity to finally replace his Senate seat with someone with more progressive ideas

1. His senate seat would be replaced by a Republican
The Republican governor of CT would appoint a fellow Republican to the seat. While she is fairly moderate, she is still a Republican and a Republican appointee would have a leg up in the run for the empty seat in 2006, when Lieberman's term expires.

The top Republicans in CT
Nancy Johnson, long-term congresswoman in a Dem district, conservative
Rob Simmons, 3 term congressman in a Dem district, conservative
Chris Shays, long-term congressman, moderate.

If Rell appointed any of those 3, the House seat would likely be a Democratic pickup. It might also get popular AG Blumenthal into the race for the Senate next year. He's like a small state version of Spitzer.

2. Don't fall for that.
The only reason Lieberman would ever be allowed to serve in a Bush Administration is so that when HE has to make the ultimate decision to pull out our troops and Iraq falls into ultimate chaos with terrorists groups worse than the Taliban running the damn place, then BushCo. and the Republicans can blame the Democrats.

I'd rather have slimy Joe win his seat again and be but one of, hopefully, many more Democrats in the Congress in 2006 (meaning, he would either have to side with his own fucking party for a change, or finally just switch to the dark side, officially) than have a coup d'etat on the Democratic Party by the neo-con leadership.

And I say this as someone who lives in Bill Frist's state - so, believe me, I understand the frustrations with poor leadership.

3. Deal is, Joe ISN'T going to win his seat again. Weicker (ex Gov)
said he has had it with Joe and will run against him.

Lowell Weicker is one of the most beloved political figures in CT and I think he would wipe the floor with Joe.

Therefore, I believe the bushies will appoint the whiny ass to something just to keep his "Democratic" voice in the loop.

4. Do you really think he can win it?
I am not familiar with the voting patterns for Connecticut, but I've always assumed - probably because of Lieberman and the Republican governor - that Connecticut was a conservative-leaning blue state.

Maybe I'm wrong.
