Galveston couple joins war protest

GALVESTON — Calvin Wehrle and Creola Frye can’t fully explain what drew them to Camp Casey, but when they arrived, they found they weren’t alone.

“All sorts of people were showing up there,” Wehrle said, describing the makeshift camp that sprung up around war protester Cindy Sheehan. “There was nothing planned about it. It was just kind of spontaneous.”

The phenomenon was reminiscent of the movie “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” where people found themselves drawn irresistibly to an isolated spot in the Mojave Desert. Wehrle and Frye made up a poster that said, “I was making mashed potatoes when suddenly I found myself forming the face of George Bush.”

Wehrle said many of the people he’d met identified with the poster.
