Clinton Says Bush Is 'Flat Wrong' on Kyoto
By CHARLES J. HANLEY, AP Special Correspondent
7 minutes ago

MONTREAL - Former President Clinton told a global audience of diplomats, environmentalists and others Friday that the Bush administration is "flat wrong" in claiming that reducing greenhouse gas emissions to fight global warming would damage the U.S. economy.

With a "serious disciplined effort" to develop energy-saving technology, he said, "we could meet and surpass the Kyoto targets in a way that would strengthen and not weaken our economies."

"There's no longer any serious doubt that climate change is real, accelerating and caused by human activities," Clinton told hundreds of delegates, environmentalists and others. "We are uncertain about how deep and the time of arrival of the consequences, but we are quite clear they will not be good."

Canadian officials said the U.S. delegation was displeased with the last-minute scheduling of the Clinton speech. But U.S. delegation chief Paula Dobriansky issued a statement saying events like Clinton's appearance "are useful opportunities to hear a wide range of views on global climate change."

11. Clinton is on our Canadian television right now in a press conference
with Paul Martin on the issue of climate change. He is so articulate, charming and political savvy that, I swear, if he were to become a Canadian and run for the leadership of the Liberals, Paul Martin would be toast, lol.

Kyoto accord won't hurt economies: Clinton

snip

There's no longer any serious doubt that climate change is real, accelerating and caused by human activities. We are uncertain about how deep and time of arrival of the consequences, but we are quite clear that they will not be good," said Clinton.

He put down the main U.S. fear about Kyoto -- that it would hurt the economy by chaining it to greenhouse gas reductions that were not achievable.

That claim, he said, "was flat wrong."

"And we know with every passing year we get more and more objective data (that) if we had a serious disciplined effort to apply on a large-scale, existing clean energy and energy conservation technologies -- we could meet and surpass the Kyoto targets easily in a way that would strengthen, not weaken, our economy," said Clinton to applause from the delegates.

Edited to add: If an article comes on-line re his comments at the press conference I will post that as well.

3. Awesome!
I just love how he pisses off the bush admin at the most 'inconvenient' times and their reps have to bite their tongues and take it, it is positively delicious. Clinton is well liked and respected in Canada, indeed, all around the world partly because of actions such as this.

5. Good for President Clinton. As mad as he makes me, and I did say I'd
withhold my judgement on his view of Kyoto until I heard what he had to say (I'm always afraid he'll cave to Poopy), I do greatly appreciate this. Now if we can get Hillary's interest away from video games and flag burning, I'd say this should warrant her attention as well.

7. The religious wack jobs are counting on getting raptured before
the shit hits the fan. The 'it's all about me' crowd isn't worried about Global warming, and that includes Pinhead**, cause Jeebus will save them. Selfish and self-serving, but what else is new with this crowd?

Seattle and the woman who is next in command after Ken Livingston in London. Both talked about how the cities are the key places where some of the biggest changes can be made by making their own decisions.
The mayor of Seattle talked about what was being done and planned there and the woman from London focused on how raising tolls into the small area of central London improved air quality tremendously, helped businesses and increased public transport, particularly the bus. Also, a switch of delivery vans, etc to alternative fuels as well as more cars that do come into the area are hybrids.

Apparently, 4 more cities signed on while at this conference, so it's somewhere over 170 or so, all aiming to cut emissions by large percentages. This is coming from both Republican and Democratic states and cities...not all Rethugs are oblivious on this matter.

Bushco was portrayed as being basically stupid and uncooperative (no surprise there)....the reporter said the US people had left the all night talks, just refused to even accept future plans for negotiating.

WHAT CLODS!

This group's been doing some good work. I'm glad that they are getting more attention. The Seattle mayor (and his predecessors) have been speaking out about global warming mitigation and sustainability for at least a decade now.
