Chretien thanks troops, but says military spending doesn't pay
KABUL -- Prime Minister Jean Chretien paid his last visit to Canadian troops on Saturday, thanking them for their efforts and telling them he has asked the military to do more than ever since he became prime minister.

But Chretien suggested afterward that military spending doesn't pay and added money he has restored to defence in recent budgets is the best the federal government could do after 10 years of defence cuts.

Cpl. Rob Lelacheur, an infantryman from Cape Breton, said soldiers respect the office of the prime minister.

''He showed up,'' said Lalacheur. ''He sent us here; at least he had the integrity to come here and see us.''

1. Sure it pays
for the likes of Halliburton, Bechtel, Brown & Root, etc.

2. Canadians have been pulling all the shi**y duty,
since the U. S. almost abandoned Afghanistan, leaving most of it to the warlords.

Kudos to Chretien for acknowledging his troops' contributions. At least he doesn't hunt for the nearest rock to hide under, while waving the flag. And we appreciate the Canadians doing what we should have done WITH the Canadians, being real peacekeepers.

3. Thank you for your post
I have always thought that being peacekeepers was and is our strong suit and I am glad and relieved to see that, in Afghanistan, we are continuing that tradition.

4. Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be shot at by both sides.
