U.S. said to be deeply angered by Martin's comments at climate conference
(Also posted in the Canada forum.)

MONTREAL (CP) - With one day of talks to go at the UN climate conference, desperate efforts to draw the United States into the global effort to curb greenhouse emissions appear to have hit a brick wall, and
Prime Minister Paul Martin is being blamed.

An official with close contacts in the U.S. delegation said any hopes of drawing Washington into the process were killed when Martin pointed a finger of blame at the United States in a news briefing at the conference.

"That was a big mistake," said the delegate, speaking on condition of anonymity Thursday. He said the U.S. delegation, which is directed from Washington by Vice-President
Dick Cheney, was deeply angered by Martin's comments.

In his comments Wednesday, Martin called on all nations to join the global effort to fight climate change, adding: "To the reticent nations, including the United States, I say there is stuch a thing as a global conscience, and now is the time to listen to it."

Pissing off dick cheney a mistake? LOL, not during an election campaign!

C'mon, cheney, if you're so fucking right, let's hear an intelligent response to a germane point. (What's that? Cue the crickets?)

3. W & his administration have an environmental conscience?
Won't happen. These corporatists could care less if they are killing their own kids and grandkids.

6. okay, Cheney's been in touch with the think tank people for so long
...that he has a head for spin. This is gonna be the talking point that the right wing uses now -- 'we were going to be good stewards of the earth until the Canadians pissed us off'. Yeah, we'll all swallow that.

The Bush admin wasn't going to do anything their corporate sponsors didn't want done in any event. Nothing Martin said is or was going to change anything.

7. Pissing off Dick Cheney is a duty and an honor.
If they are allowing the global ecological catastrophe to proceed because Cheney had a hissy-fit, that's all you need to know about the Bushites, really. Who do they think they are?

11. The admin didn't want
Clinton to speak either.....another threat not to sign. They had no intention of signing, and the job loss in the US is another red herring.

The whole stance is just another bit of posturing.

Martin is being accused of using Clinton to get votes, too, which is more posturing by the right......our right, this time.

I might also point out that Focus on the Family and the NRA are campaigning for Harper, the Bush clone. They started their campaigning in Toronto.......one of the largest, most racially mixed and inclusive cities on the continent. Toronto eagerly welcomed the court decision allowing gay marriage, and most here regard it as a human rights issue, rather than a religious issue. We've also had more than our normal share of handgun deaths this year, so the NRA message is coming off rather badly.

13. I see! Cheney was going to join into KYOTO until Martin said what he
said.

Man - CHENEY must really think Americans are stupid.

Nobody in Canada will buy it. Just a special message from CHEYNEY to the American voters "we tried to sign up on Kyoto but they were mean to us".

How sad!
