... As DFL mayor of St. Paul, he started out a loyal Democrat. There is footage of him at a DFL rally asserting that 'the most important thing in this election is to re-elect Bill Clinton!!"
Of course, he later put his finger to the wind, found that the Republicans were in ascendancy and -- presto! -- Norm's a Republican.
Now, for anyone who doubts he's simply a craven politico driven solely by ambition....
I have friends active in state Republican circles (I don't often admit this..) who concedes,on more than one occasion, that Coleman, while a DFLer, looked around at the pecking order and who would eventually get to run for governor or U.S. Senate (remember, this is a guy who ran for governor and LOST to the cretinous Jesse Ventura)
Norm saw that the line was longer on the DFL side. Three, maybe four party activists had priority before he'd get his chance. He looked over to the Repub side and saw only one or two people who would be ahead of him.....and emerged a Republican...
there are many, including Republicans, who don't trust him not to do another shape-shifting act if the wind changes direction. howevre, conventional wisdom says he's been so very very helpful to the Bush Administration that he has painted himself into a corner he'll never get out of...
and yes, it is possible to kick his ass in the next election..
