Salt Lake City news:"Christian soldiers battle the 'War on Christmas' "
Edited on Sun Dec-11-05 11:45 AM by Bluebear
After noticing how few Salt Lake City businesses mention Christmas in their seasonal window displays, Thomas Corkish took an informal survey last week. Every time the Baptist pastor visited a store or gas station festooned with yuletide greenery, he queried an employee about what they were celebrating.
"No matter who I asked, they'd say, 'We're celebrating the season,' or 'We're celebrating the holiday'," said Corkish, pastor of Anchor Baptist Church in Holladay. Note: Why is he living in such an evil sounding town? "It's almost like people have been asked not to say, 'Merry Christmas.' I've been a pastor for 50 years and I've never seen anything like it."
Corkish joins an emerging chorus of religious conservatives and commentators who, bothered by what they see as a secular watering down of a Christian holiday, want to put the Christ back in Christmas. These groups contend that a fear of offending non-Christians has led retailers, schools and government agencies to ignore Christmas' biblical roots in favor of folk symbols like Santa Claus or generic phrases such as "Happy Holidays."
This debate flares each December, but in recent months the outcry has gotten louder than ever. They even have a term for this supposed anti-Christmas bias: the "war on Christmas," named for a new book by Fox News Channel anchor John Gibson, whose subtitle is, How the Liberal Plot to Ban the Sacred Christian Holiday is Worse Than You Thought. ....

11. Precisely.......
these nut-wads don't even know the origin of the HOLIDAY they're celebrating for christ's sake. December 25th is no more jesus' birthday than groundhogs day. I've been silent on this "assault on christmas" shit, until now. I didn't want to get involved with these mindless drones over something this inane but they just keep pushing and pushing, as always, until they get everyone in the country divided and taking one side or the other. Guess what side I'm on? ;)

Why can't these idiots take the bible's advice and pray (and prey) in private. Why must they continuously shove religion down everyone's throats? I don't see atheists knocking on people's doors, erecting elaborate anti-god displays, covering their cars with anti-god bumper-stickers etc. No, only the "poor persecuted christians" do that! Screw 'em.

2. Whole place is like that . . .
. . .with the exception of a few brave souls.

IMHO the only reason one should ever cross the Utah state line is in a Jeep, preparing to descend into the canyonlands for a blessed few days of solitude.

Now I'm thinkin' bout Mormons. Where's mah patented tonic??!!

3. why r so many christians so insecure about their own religion?
the pathological need to shove it up the butts of all living beings and then claim to be persecuted victims
is kinda pathetic. its almost as if their own beliefs are so shaky and fragile that only by forcing them
on others that they can feel any sort of security.

What they need is a Jesus that says it is better to go in their own closet and pray rather than
show off and brag in public.

Happy Holidays :-)

PS - Kmart has no problems advocating and promoting christians only holidays. Went there yesterday and in about 30 minutes
heard 3 songs mentioning jesus by name. No songs for the Jews, which is a hoot since the mythical jesus was jewish, and no tunes for Islamics or atheists.

5. "... their own beliefs are so shaky and fragile ..."
Bingo! God forbid their intolerant b.s. be held up to the light of scrutiny, or compared with anything Jesus supposedly said.

Silence the godless hordes at all costs!!!

Interesting you mentioed the tunes. I've heard "Let It Snow", which is pretty generic and wintry, than any other carol so far this "season". :)

12. they have no beliefs
they have wants. They want to have nice things. Christmas is the season of being given nice things; sometimes by people you care about. The War on Christmas is the result of confusion (caused by some cynics) on the part of some dim, mostly harmless, people who are afraid if people do not say "Merry Christmas" it will somehow result in their not getting nice things.
If these people had real belief, not to mention a real belief in the message of Jesus' ministry as told to us in the Gospels, there would be no War on Christmas.

4. First of all, what DBoon said....
and second, there are other holidays being celebrated at this time of year, despite what some of the more ignorant among us may believe.

Jesus Christ!!! I enjoy a tree and a new gadget as much as the next guy, but if someone in front of me in line buys a menora (sp) or multi-colored Kwanza candles, why give them a hard time?

What happened to the teachings of Christ with these people, instead of the selfish bullshit some of them have embraced in their perceived "persecution"!? Where do these people get off?! Can we just boot them off while traveling full speed?

myself, I'll probably never get out there. :(

Colorado's just breathtaking, though. At least, the flatirons near Boulder. :hi:

10. "This debate flares each December"
> This debate flares each December

They make it sound like this is an old tradition. The fact is that this is nothing more than a media stunt, and it began "flaring" only recently with the advent of wall-to-wall right-wing networks bringing out what has become their "usual holiday programming."

Outside of right-wing media addicts, many of whom mystifyingly are big DU posters, this "debate" is completely unknown. If it weren't for the plethora of postings on DU about this, I wouldn't have known anything about it at all.

13. The self proclaimed Christians are missing the fact that
the materialistic extravaganza that now passes for "Christmas" in no way represents or has anything to do with real christian values.

14. Quit buying into the evil commercialized "holiday" if it offends
If your eye offends you, pluck it out. But leave my eyes alone.

Honestly. Why is it that non-Christians always have to help Christians understand what the hell their own dogma is saying to them?
