Church bought building with adult video store to shut it down

Adult video store being evicted by church owner

December 11, 2005

MILFORD, Conn. --Two years after buying a building that houses an adult video store, the Kingdom Life Christian Church is moving to evict its tenant.

The church bought the building in 2003 for $245,000 in an effort to force Video Pleasures to close. But owner Michael Friend remained in the building by exercising a three-year lease agreement he had with the previous owners.

<snip>

"The whole effort has been to drive me out of business," he said.

City officials hope the church can do just that.

"The sooner that business is not there the better," said Mayor James L. Richetelli Jr.

<snip>

Ramirez said the church has no plans to buy other adult businesses. He noted that Video Pleasures is the only such business located in a residential zone.

"I don't intend to make this a citywide crusade," Ramirez said.

1. Was the area zoned for such business types?
Unless the zoning has changed, I would think the church would be stuck renting to an adult business.
I sure hope the price was above market price. If they want to spend their parishioners monies on this sort of thing??? I sure wouldn't be putting money in the offering on Sunday for such activity. But I am sure there would be many a bible banger that would.

2. The lease was up.
Edited on Sun Dec-11-05 02:44 PM by Silverhair
When you lease a place, the lease is not forever. When the lease runs out, the owner can decline to renew the lease. The porno shop had two years to know this was coming, so he had plenty of time to prepare. All he has to do is get a new lease in another building and move.

No sympathy.

How the church used the money is between the leadership of the church and the congregation. If they wanted to put up the money, and were able to do so, then that is their right to do so.

7. Not my point - The store was there prior to the purchase by the church
The Church was obligated to uphold the lease.
Once the lease was expired, then the Church was able to do what it wanted.

10. If you read the article, the SOB did not uphold their end of the lease...
so there is no reason for the church to maintain it.

4. I'm sure they refused the tennant's dirty porn money for those.....

I wonder if he has any rental records for the church elders.

6. It looks like the church did everything by the book (laws).
There doesn't seem to be much of a story here.

11. Who said business had to be nice?
In fact, the SOB wasn't being very nice when they were in arrears on their rent. They knew they had a "death sentence" at the end of the lease. They were in arrears on their rent. No sympathy here.

13. Sexually-Oriented Business.
Here in Dallas we constantly have zoning fights, so I guess I assumed everyone was familiar with the acronym.

16. You know it, man! This stuff I'm drinking now has some heat on it..
Get this:

2-row pale malt
60L crystal malt
Chocolate malt
Northern brewer and crystal hops
Star Anise
Nutmeg
Ginger

It's like Christmas in a bottle. Never did figure out its alcohol content, but I think it's up there.

19. It's in the middle someplace.
Somewhere in the chapter where God gave the wonders of Net Present Value, Arbitrage, and Capital Asset Pricing Models to His flock.
