WaPo Finally Gets It: "Bush admin wants to torture AMERICANS"
WaPo Finally Gets It: Bush admin wants to torture Americans

Editorial Washington Post
Torture and the Constitution

Interpreting the Constitution as permitting waterboarding in secret prisons is, to most experts outside the administration, legally outrageous and politically untenable. It means that the Bush administration accepts, in principle, that the FBI may use waterboarding, painful stress positions, forced nudity and other methods on Americans, in American prisons, "in certain circumstances." That's why the Justice Department has classified its memos on the subject and kept its conclusions secret. That's why President Bush and Vice President Cheney have worked so hard to stop the McCain amendment, which would pave the way for legal challenges to their interpretation. They want to give themselves the authority to commit human rights abuses without having to explain or justify themselves to the public, the world -- or an impartial court.

Just back from Christmas shopping, and checking online stuff. Don't feel very festive, but sure as hell would rather be informed. Thanks for the post.

19. It'll be ok.
There will be tv, warm meals, rec time, and only the occasional fecal humiliation, waterboarding, and good old fashioned beatings with rubber hoses. We will be with all of our friends. That's the best part about Hell, living or otherwise: only the best and most interesting people get invited.

Cheney, Myers and Rummy aree right now drawing up the plans for 9-11 Part 2.

16. Anyone recall Nixon raising alert status to DefCon III twice...
...during Watergate?

Here's one version of it:
http://www.fas.org/nuke/guide/usa/c3i/defcon.htm

As I recall it, Nixon felt the Soviets under-estimated his power because of the Watergate scandal. This was his way of showing them (and everyone else, natch) he was still in charge.

These goons are headed for war crime trials, considerably worse than what Nixon faced.

But really, don't be surprised if Bush pardons his entire administration on the last day in office. Then he resigns and Cheney is sworn in and pardons Bush.

All neat and tidy...

17. I do or, read about it later. As he descended deeper and deeper
into his paranoia, he issued a bunch of orders that his people just had to ignore.

But, as bad as he was, he was mostly a crook. Cheney and his cohorts are a different order of magnitude, imho. They frighten me and that doesn't happen very often. :(

...Reichstag Fire, Enabling Acts, agressive war based on fraud, Night&Fog, the People's Courts, the SS, torture.

I've been watching this coming for over a decade, and couldn't do a damn thing to stop it.

33. Neat and tidy. Oh, and regarding your sig line...
The quote is attributable to Eric Brazilian with an "r". He was the leader of the philadelphia reggae/pop band The Hooters, who went on to have some national success with watered down versions of their good songs. He also wrote True Colors, which Cyndi Lauper made into a hit.

I use to love the Hooters, before they went commercial. Project for today: find the original Hooters album Amore. The definitive vesion of All You Zombies, plus fun songs like Hangin on a Heartbeat and the title track.

7. The most frightening thing about the "Patriot Act" is that......
....nowhere in the entire text is the word "terrorist" defined. That leaves the word wide open for subjective interpretation by the Chimpministration, or arguably any local jurisdictions, say for example a protest of Ohio residents who do not like the way that state's corrupt government is attempting to suppress any questioning of electronic voting.

Anybody who believes expanded wiretapping, searches without warrants, investigating library records, and the invention of a legal non existence called "enemy combatant" was only done to investigate foreign "terraists" has their head permanently stuck in their ass. It's been about harassing American citizens from day one, and despite the time in which it was passed, there was no excuse not to READ the fucking thing before signing it.

I'll bet they've assassinated americans, done all kinds of things. There was the absolutly fucking crazy period from 9/11/2001 to about late in 2003. Now the craziness is starting to disapate, and a lot of illusions are being seen through. And its going to tick on for awhile, its going to take years, but the lies will fall, and there's going to be one hell of a hangover!!!

36. I wish we could be sure we -would- find out...
...it might happen that everything is swept under the rug in the interests of national security.

Imagine the world finding out Bush had an official policy for torture: are there any future wars where American prisoners would be safe from torture?

What about the censure? Would the world continue to do business with America? There'd have to be consequences if the truth is revealed.
