Who has lost a job lately?
or know someone who has. What good economy, this dumbass won't be happy until everyone is living on the streets. He really want to start a draft for his other wars. I'm am sick of seeing this arrogant, lying ass strutting on stage dicatating that garbage that condelezza, rove and cheney write for his dumbass. When he's reading it he looks at the audience like he saying " I said it and you better believe me and you can't do anything about it. He really believes he is a deep thinker and his repugs believe that shit.

1. I have a BS degree in computer science
and I'm making $9.50 an hour doing work that is not related at all to what I planned on doing. This economy is just roaring ahead for me and other folks in the computer field. It's just great, still living with my parents about two and a half years after getting a degree. I couldn't imagine a better future for myself anywhere else other than in George W. Bush's Ownership Society.

17. Yeah I've considered moving to the DC area
I think that is one of the best areas right now for computer folks.

The problem I'm running into is, like cap said, that there are very few job offers advertised for people with little or no experience. Most job ads I've seen, even those for "Junior" engineers, seem to want at least 3-5 years of experience. Many jobs in DC also require current security clearance which I do not have. So overall I've been in a nice Catch 22 situation here between the experience and clearance requirements for the last few years. My location in Maine and the lack of just about any tech industry here precluded me from doing any interships during college and I can't afford to move somewhere now and be an unpaid or poorly paid intern for 12-24 months. I do have about a year of experience in a job where I basically donated a lot of time on a gamble, but that ultimately failed and now I've been working on non-computer related jobs for over a year.

18. My company hasn't hired a new programmer inhouse in 5 years.
I have been here a bit over that and I'm still the young guy. The reason noone wants to hire young college grads is because the grunt work, the actual coding you do to really learn the guts of a system is outsourced now.

So they just need a handful of experienced people on that system who write up the specs and shoot it off overseas or to people onshore. Its ultimately self defeating as people leave/retire there will be noone left who knows what the hell is going on.

Doing that grunt work is critical to becoming a good programmer(and to keeping your skills up) you learn so much more, see it work, work with the business, learn the business. That is being lost at many many companies around this country.

30. Look at Patuxent River and China Lake
They run a program there that brings in people fresh out of college and then trains them through several rotations for two years. They are begging for Comp Sci majors last I heard.

2. Haven't lost a job (I'm self-employed)...
Edited on Sun Dec-11-05 08:06 PM by Blue_In_AK
but my retired husband has just been informed that his pension check is going to be reduced by an additional $500 a month starting in January for his health care premium. This is ridiculous -- we don't spend $500 a YEAR on health care. If I could be sure neither of us would get sick any time soon, I'd tell him to cancel the friggin' health care insurance completely. His take-home out of his pension check has now been reduced $800 from when he first retired 10 years ago. We're not even in our 60s yet -- by the time we get old, there probably won't be ANY pension check left -- and they'll probably have found a way to take our social security, too. Bah, humbug!

3. after a 20+-year career of professional success
companies folded and I got laid off in 2001, 2002 (after taking a 33% pay cut), in 2003 (actually my own business failed) and again in 2005 (after taking an additional 50% pay cut).

now, I can't even get an interview for the few jobs I can even find out about.

this economy rocks!

(if you are a defense contractor, an oil company executive or a predatory lender.

20. Sounds like my situation, except that I'm self employed
I don't get laid off, but my corporate clients keep folding or cutting their freelance budgets. I'm making 75% less then I was when Clinton was in office. I don't know how much more of this "surging" economy I can take!

23. This is exactly what I was going to post
I'm also self-employed and most of my clients are secular non-profits or governmental agencies. The business was grossing well over six figures pre-Bush. Now I'm lucky to gross 50K. If I were willing to consult for some of the "Neo-Christian Government-Funded" organizations, I could probably increase my profit line again. At this time, I'm not willing.

29. Don't I know that one
I had more work than I could shake a stick at during the Clinton boom. I could even cold-call and get work, people had that much business for me.
My income has gone down every year Bush has been in office. Fortunately, the husband makes a good buck, we have health insurance (so far) and an inheritance from my father means I have money socked away for retirement. Though it's still depressing to watch your income disappear, little by little, every year.

4. Three years ago
I was laid-off along with about 30% of my co-workers. To my knowledge at least half of us remain unemployed. I'm a single 40 something well-educated professionally licensed female who has endeavored to update and acquire new skills. I'm seriously considering going to dog grooming school.

22. Thanks!
Yes, dog grooming can be strenuous and it can have some definite risks.

I'm looking for a trade or skill that I can take with me if I relocate, cannot easily be outsourced, does not require a large investment of time or money to learn or to begin ones own business.

I've also considered custom embroidery and sewing alterations but decided against it because I have very poor vision in one eye, culinary school but decided against it because of the expense and time required to complee the program, funeral directing and burials but decided I personally could not deal with death all the time, and various arts and crafts including stained glass wok, jewelry making and beadwork but decided against it because I do not want to rely on the internet or traveling the arts and crafts circuit to make sales.

Did I mention that I have ten years of college including three graduate degrees and two professional license? In my last job I worked as a money manager and had sole responsibility for hundreds of millions of dollars (mostly other peoples trust funds). I see that as being a dying field. Most people who inherit money now spend it rather than maintain the investment and very few are able to save and invest. Those who are largely are choosing to invest in their McMansion. There are banks here that have already eliminated their trust and investment services.

14. do we know each other?
lol, you just described me. . . except i haven't lost my little house (yet) and am NOT moving in w/ relatives regardless.

but it does suck, have not had a single response to any apps submitted. Take that back, 2 seperate responses that the position i applied for were 'not being filled afterall' although a few weeks later i saw the same job's ad ran again.

i have run through what savings i had, and can only find small 'fixit' jobs for a small clientele that needs some various repair on their homes. At least i can find that.

8. Me
I was laid off this year, for the second time in two years. The first was from a job I'd had for three years, the second for one. Since then I have been able to find a handful of temp jobs, which pay a few bucks an hour and can last maybe days. (For the record: I have a BA and two years postgrad.)

9. 250 Frito Lay employees in my town
were called into private meetings and given their pink slips.

http://www.mysanantonio.com/sharedcontent/APStories/stories/D8EC9FN8D.html

Snack maker Frito-Lay Inc. says it will stop regular work at its headquarters building Friday and call in all 2,000 employees for meetings at which 250 of them will learn they have lost their jobs.

The company announced the cuts and picked the jobs to eliminate in early November, but individual employees will not learn their fate until Friday's one-on-one meetings with supervisors, said Charles Nicolas, a company spokesman.
