Hopes for federal aid face do-or-die week

By GEOFF PENDER

JACKSON - Thousands of homeowners and South Mississippi's overall Katrina recovery face a do-or-die situation in Congress this week, in part because of partisan politics surrounding indicted Republican leader U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay.

snip

If the relief is not passed this week, before Congress breaks for Christmas, it could be put on hold indefinitely. Talk on Capitol Hill last week was House Republican leaders would delay returning to Washington until at least Jan. 31, an effort to give DeLay a chance to clear himself in court next month of a money laundering indictment so he could be reinstated as House majority leader in the new year.

Barbour and Coast officials, testifying before the House last week, warned that many South Mississippians are on the bubble financially and emotionally. The grace periods on their mortgages for their destroyed homes have ended. They have no insurance payout coming because the federal government told them they didn't need flood coverage. Their jobs are gone and many face bankruptcy. They may give up on rebuilding and start a mass exodus soon, Barbour warned, sucking the wind out of rebuilding efforts.

1. Comeuppance for Haley Barbour?
This is the Congress that Haley Barbour helped put into power in 1994, and now they are coming back to bit him right in his big fat white ass.

Of course, it's the people of south Mississippi who will suffer the most, and it remains to be seen if Barbour will suffer politically as a consequence. Or maybe Mississippians will just vote their race come election time and get sidetracked by non-issues like the Confederate flag. In the end, the old Stars and Bars won't pay your mortgage and bills every month.

6. In the first days/weeks Barbour was most concerned about casinos
Every time he was shown on the news, he was talking about the damage to the casinos and emphasizing the need to rebuild the casinos as soon as possible. Besides the casinos, he spoke a lot about how much help they were getting from the Bush Administration. I hope he faces some repercussions over this.

2. I feel for these people
but they need to get pissed off at Delay, Hastert and the other assholes who are responsible for keeping them living in tents. And they need to let their own repuke representatives know they can be replaced if they don't get some action. Time to get the taar and feathers ready.

morning all. This is not about gulf coasters getting pissed and demanding help, this is about the rest of their fellow humans getting pissed and demanding help. Peace in pissedness! Off to call my congressional representatives, tell them to represent me.

Edited to add this from the OP's quoted article, and the comment yeah, right:
"Where's W?

Despite promises he made after the storm, George W. Bush doesn't appear willing to add to that clout. In fact, Katrina recovery hasn't appeared to even be on his radar lately.

He hasn't returned here in about two months and has mentioned it only a handful of times, in passing, in speeches he's made. His office has said much of the relief spending Mississippi wants can wait and has insisted any additional Katrina spending be offset by cuts elsewhere, something that could spell its doom in Congress. He's appeared more focused on damage control on his falling approval ratings over the war in Iraq.

Bush's lack of support has drawn some criticism, even from Mississippi Republican stalwarts and Bush supporters, including Barbour and U.S. Sen. Trent Lott.

Wicker said he still doesn't know why Bush hasn't gotten behind spending to help Coast homeowners.

"But I think in the end the president will sign the bill," Wicker said. "I guess every administration has its bean counters, and I think they may have won the initial arguments over there. But I think (Bush) really wants to help. I surely do think he'll sign i"
