A death penalty question
Edited on Mon Dec-12-05 05:11 PM by Chimpys_Last_Stand
I ask this sarcastically, but also sincerely...if that makes any sense:

What happens if a death row inmate, on his/her way to the death chamber to have their sentence carried out, suffers a heart attack? Or is befelled by any other life-threatening condition? Are paramedics summoned? Is CPR performed? Is the inmate rushed to hospital...in an effort to save their life....in order to have them killed at the behest of and in the manner dictated by the state?

Just wonderin'.

1. My guess is that unless he was unconscious
they would go ahead and strap him in.

2. I would say yes

based on the fact that before the needle is inserted the skin is wiped with an antiseptic swab. The reason is that until the inmate is actually dead there is always the (even if very remote) possibility of a stay.

4. Paramedics are absolutely called in
Oddly enough, he or she has to be healthy enough to execute. He or she has health care rights and the state has responsibilities until the execution is actually carried out.

14. wait a minute
Are you saying a person walking down to be executed shouldn't be revived if a health emergency arises?

So what if at 11:30 death row man falls down with heart attack--he is dying. No medics called to resusitate cause he was gonna die anyway. Governor calls at 11:50 and says STOP the execution.

So now the state has failed in its duty to take care of its prisoner.

15. Not at all....
I'm simply pointing out the sheer insanity of the death penalty. Hurry up and get his heart going again, he's got a date with the executioner in half an hour. That's what I'm saying.

6. yes, they revive him, and postpone the execution if necessary.
states insist that the condemned by conscious and alert at the time of execution.
they also are required to provide humane medical care right up until the moment the execution is carried out.

to some it seems absurd to revive the prisoner, to others it points out the absurdity of capital punishment in the first place.

it's the odd juxtaposition of humanity and barbarism that makes the situation seem so peculiar.

12. They are put on suicide watch 24 to 48 hours before their execution.
The people who want to kill him don't want to be deprived of it.

13. There actually was a case where someone tried to commit suicide,
they resuscitated him so they could execute him.
