I need to rant.
I am a mother, Im 52 years old, my son is in the National Guard, and they wont let him go because the National Guard has put a stoploss on all reservists and Guardsmen and women who are legally supposed to be discharged when their time is up. They might send him overseas on Friday.
Im mad. Of course Im mad. Im a mother.
Let me tell you what being a mother is. If you dont know. It begins with having a child. You are a young girl, (I was only 27), and you give birth. wow....what a birth..my son took 38 hours of hard labour to give birth to. He weighed almost 9 lbs,
he was so beautiful..I dont care how much pain it was now, he was worth it..wanna know about him? he was so cute..he had fat cheeks and a smart little mind...he knew the alphabet by the time he was 14 months old..I taught him..his name is Bobby
He was so cute..he called all animals FEEFAWS...what a little bundle of laughs he was..I tried to teach him compassion...it worked..he had such a good heart, he saved so many animals from being hurt by other kids..he saved so many small animals, brought them home and asked me to save them..he fought once, when he was 5, a group of small boys who tried to kill a toad..he actually fought for a toad...wouldnt let anyone hurt it.
Bobby grew up and I watched him as a little boy...he played in a neighborhood with other little boys..he was taught , by me, to be kind, but of course he played hard games..like boys do..he played sandlot baseball, and he told me once "Mom...baseball is more fun when its just us kids...forget the adults around, they ruin it...Its more fun when they are just kids"
Ya they were kids, all my boys...Bobby was too..he was named after his dad...he lost his dad when he was 11, his dad wad killed in a horrible accident at work..
I pretty much raised him..I did the best I could to raise all three of the boys, and I tried to teach them one thing...kindness, compassion, and empathy...maybe I should have taught them something else...
Dont trust the US government.
I did try that. I showed them the movies, Apocalypse Now, Born on the 4th of July, every anti war movie I could show them.
They all knew what I was doing. I showed them what Vietnam was, I did everything I could .
When Bobby was in High School he protected a gay kid here from being beaten up in school. I like to think that came from me teaching him, as a kid, always to protect the underdog, always to stand up for what is right.
Thats why, when , a few years ago, when Clinton was in office, I was called by Bobby and he said "Hey Mom...I joined the National Guard..I want to help."
He knew I didnt trust the military, but in his mind, he felt it was the kind, and the good thing to do. He assured me "Hey Mom..Ill be able to help the people here in Michigan...fight forest fires, protect us"..
Ranting away here.
sorry.
Now, hes supposed to be OUT of the Guard. Legally, he is supposed to leave the Guard on November 17.
Who would have ever thought that an illegal bastard by the name of Bush would be now on the verge of murdering my son, and not allowing him to be discharged on his due date???
Who would have ever thought I , as a mom, who watched my little boy grow into a man of Integrity, a man, despite the horrible death of his own father, still became of man of decency and kindness and compassion and NOW, because of some FRAT BOY WHO WANTS TO MAKE MONEY FOR HIS FRIENDS
is being allowed to murder not only our sons and daughters in this war, but will possibly send MY son to be murdered and die in some godforsaken place.
Yes, I rant. Im tired. I have 25 years of watching my son grow into a man of decency, kindness, and goodness. I also know that on Oct 24, he will lose his right to be discharged, and be deployed to god knows where.
For what. For what. A spoiled Frat Boy with no Intregrity and NO compassion who will murder him for money and his corporate friends?
Flame away.
Im mad. I am very mad.
I gave birth, I raised a wonderful young man.
No one, I mean NO ONE, has a right to take him from me.
end of Mothers rant.

2. ya what am I supposed to do now
watch him go on Friday???
say goodbye? never see him again??? Oh ya....never see him again how many of us have been thru that
I have 3 choices
1. stand in front of the WH with my sons picture and scream
2. stand firm and help my son by being there for him and working to get him out (which is what Ive been doing)
3. get drunk all day, and sleep.
the 3rd option, at my age is getting close to being the best. I might even get drunk enough to get some publicity....hows this
I will set myself on fire in front of the WH with gasoline....if they dont let him go..
orrrrrr there is always a hunger strike..I am not kidding..
I will do it. I will do it.
If
Bush
Kills
My
Son
I
Will
Be

18. I'm so sorry
I mean, they are only words, but for what it's worth, I'm so so sorry. I'm in tears. It's awful. War is awful. Unnecessary war is even more shameful.

All those senseless deaths.

I swear, some days I don't know how we make it to another day with all the evil that goes on... blatant evil right in front of our faces! And no one cares. No one does anything.

The evil people continue to win.

The emperor has no clothes and we continue to commend him on his fine wardrobe.

Damn, if I weren't babysitting 4 kids, I'd have myself a drink right now.

a real man is kind...a real man holds a child in his arms and smiles with gentlekindness...a real man is good, and isnt afraid to be compassionate and empathatic..a real man knows that in ones weakness, one finds their strength.

There are no actual adult men running this country.
The only people in charge of this country are infants, spoiled infants.

11. I agree!!!
Every time a man is in power, that man or some other man does something mean and nasty.

I say, herd up all the male leaders and lock 'em up and put REAL women in charge for a while, say for 10 years. Hillary comes to mind as does a lot of my co-workers.

No, that wasn't sarcasm.

20. Here's another hug from another mother,
I'm a single parent of a 12-year old boy who has promised me that he'll never go into the military despite what his fucking freeper father wants, but you never know! He's my only child, he'll be my only child, and we're extremely close.

I simply cannot imagine going through what you're going through right now. I won't be patronizing and say I know how you feel, because I don't. My son isn't preparing to leave with the possibility of him being killed and never seeing him again, and I'm not sure I could handle it it he were. But, as a mother of a son, I do have at least some idea of where you're coming from, and I wish I were able to be there in person for you. We're all here for you whenever you need us. And please keep us updated on what is happening.

If that doesn't help...pack your son's bags and get him the hell outta dodge. I cannot believe they will not release Bobby from duty. These people are wicked! Cruel, wicked assholes!

Its now at this point....his unit will be sent to the Middle East, a National Guard unit from Michigan. some will be sent to Camp Atterbury in Indiana....where they go from there, no one knows..
This is an ad hoc draft of men and women IN the units who are NOT being allowed their legal discharges
This is about Bush and his buddies saving face and spinning their LIES
This is about killing OUR kids for Haliburton and Bechtel.
THIS is about losing our sons and daughters for NOTHING>

5. I can't tell you that I know how you feel, because I don't relly know. My
son is only 11. But I do know that when I can't find him, I get so scared. In fact, I've even been know to call the police when I've looked everywhere and haven't been successful. (The little rat strolled around the corner as I was making the police report.) You will have no one to call, because the people who we elect to run this country and keep you, me, and your son safe are a bunch of frontmen for the some of the greediest thugs that ever slithered the face of this earth. They are sending your son someplace we have no reason for being based on lies. I am so sorry. I feel such sympathy for women like you. The mother's of these men and boys in Iraq have to be suffering much like the mother's of the men and boys that served in Vietnam. I am old enough to have lived through that experience, and I remember it very well. But I do believe that if you, and other women like you speak up, tell these vicious greedy bastards that what they are doing is killing and maiming your sons for their own evil ends, that people will listen. Surely you have a right to rant. And again, I am so sorry.

I, and so many other pepole are furious that men and women are dying, and the fraud in the White House doesn't have the guts to give their loved ones a damn good reason why he has sent them into this hellhole of a war without adequate supplies and troops. 61. We can't expect Mari to be "reasonable" about it.
He's her son, after all. Even the stoic Vulcan Sarek said, "My logic is uncertain where my son is concerned."

All we can do is support her in her worry and outrage, and pray or spellcast that her fine young man -- and all the others -- come through the experience safely.

And of course, work to get Bush's whole immoral crew out of power as soon as possible.

young people who are dying in Iraq are the same age as the students I used to teach. I would hate to think of any of them getting killed in an immoral and unnecessary war.

By the way, I think you would agree with the remark of a former Viet Cong who was interviewed for a TV documentary. He had obviously done a lot of self-examination since the war and he said, "When you kill a soldier, you are also grievously wounding his mother."

I wish we had that kind of wisdom in the White House.

Sorry for your situation. It's weird, your kid seems to not mind his role, but you see the permanence of what could happen to him in Iraq. Kids think nothing can go wrong. I was like that when I was in the military during Vietnam Era. You don't understand until you are older what your parents were going through and how lucky you were to come out OK.

Take care

published in all the leading papers. maybe even get you on tv. too many people STILL need to be jolted into seeing what's going on here. if you need numbers to back you up, i'm here as i'm sure just about everybody here is. maybe you on tv with a huge petition. forget going through all these organizations. what could be more powerful than a mother's righteously angry plea? you really know how to get your point across, Mari333. please seriously think about getting this post out there.

39. Thank you for your post Mari.
I am so sorry that your son is not receiving the original discharge date and I can only imagine how difficult that is for you, and for him right now. But your honesty and anger certainly brings sense in this primarily nonsensical time. What a thought provoking, heartfelt post. It was a reminder to me how important our experiences are for others to hear.

Ive been thinking about the direction this planet is taking and it seems as the drums of war get louder, womens' voices are seemingly becoming less heard less valued, and more invisible in our society .

The bearers of life like you, are the ones who know what it is like to give birth, and realize the incredible value not only in bringing a life into the world, but in the incredible experience itself.

I believe we need to hear from more women, and I think when women learn to trust more, our intuitions and instincts, we will start appreciating and valuing our gifts, that are so necessary to maintaining a balanced world, and know how vitally important it is have our voices heard, not only for us, but for the planet. Many men already appreciate and know this sadly, more than many women do.

Maybe this turbulent time will be a catalyst for people to begin to realize the value that women and men can play in promoting peace and healing in the world. I hope so.

Thanks again for sharing your voice.

41. When my son was born I wrote this and sang it to him every night
Edited on Sun Oct-19-03 09:35 PM by Mari333
He was born in the spring.

"I listen to your voice, the coo so gentle in my ear
the day you came to see us was the first day of our lives
and as you grow and learn and feel this love becomes so strong
sweet baby how the sun shines in your eyes....
"See how the spring sends flowers to welcome you to earth
see how the world has opened up her arms?

do you feel the million tuggings that are growing in our hearts
the wonderment of all your baby charms?

You....are my love....every finger on your little hand?
You....are my love....my lovely little man..........."

I wont let him go to die in an illegal war for these thugs.
I wont.
Not my child.

63. Damn Mari you have me crying again
That was beautiful.

I called Senator Levin's office on Tuesday, they gave me a cursory thank you. I called again on Wednesday, hoping to get someone to talk the issues, but I still got the cursory Senator Levin is aware and thank you. When I called Senator Kennedy's office this week to thank him for his words on the Senate floor, I brought up this issue, they asked me to put it in letter form. I did and it was mailed Friday.

Call me Mari, if you need to reach out.

I don't think I could handle this if it were my son. He is so precious and dear to me, a loving, intelligent smart kid, who told me yesterday he wants to become a US Senator. This is all so heartbreaking, a young man completing his duty, while an awol whistle ass uses a creative draft to keep him in against his will.

43. Can we start a letter writing campaign for you
We should all get a letter writing campaign going for Maries son. If we all faxed a letter into to her Senator or Senator Byrd I bet that they could help.

Mari I don't have kids and I can only envy you for having a son. If I did have a Son I would go to a lawyer and every politician in office and tell them about his due date to be discharged. I hate F'CKING BUSH (Excuse me)and he needs to be taken out of office by the people of the USA. He is an AWOL bastard whom never fought a day in his life for anything. Your son has served his country and he should be released from duty.
I grew up in the Viet Nam era and a man being sent to Nam was like a death sentence. I feel that Iraq is going to be that way in the future and we don't deserve to lose our your men and women for oil or any other reason.

DO YOU NEED HELP WITH A LETTER CAMPAIGN?

Lawyers have sent letters..My son has called the GI Rights hotline...we are doing everything we can
Levins office says..sorry...we cant do anything more.
Its not just me...remember..its THOUSANDS of kids out there being held in an AD HOC DRAFT....the military wont let them GO when their time is UP
If (and he probably will) go on Friday, I will be a mess. But I will also be BUSH's WORST NIGHTMARE.
I know how to fight. I will make a stink like the BFEE has never seen before.

48. Marie, I understand, too
My son is just the same age as yours and even has the same name. I totally understand what you're feeling. It's something I've been thinking about since 911. I'm lucky in that mine isn't in the service, but you know, if he'd said he was joining the National Guard a few years ago, I doubt if I would have thought twice about it. It simply wouldn't have occurred to me that they'd be sent overseas.

Keep up the good fight to get him released, but just on a personal note, vis a vis keeping your sanity - his odds are very good. I don't mean that you should accept this or that it's right, just that you should remain very hopeful that he'll be fine even while you fight to get him home. Some of my son's friends have been there and we and of course, their parents, were worried sick, but they have come home. The last person that we know personally that was there was in the 3rd ID and kept getting extended past his time but he finally came home. Your son will come home.

44. Mari. When I was born..........
a girl, a good girl, fresh in the world and just off the farm would look deep into my eyes as she changed my diaper. She would hum a simple song and kiss my little pink feet and have dreams for me, dreams of castles and ease that she herself had as a girl and had since abandoned as a new adult mother, thinking rightly that it was too late for her. 50+ years later, she still has those dreams for me Mari, may you and your son be so blessed.

Peace, be still

Tom

P.S. Being a military brat who refused to serve I truly enjoyed your rant. Being a single Dad of two boys, ages 11 and 16 (cannon fodder) I fully sympathize with your post. Vote the bastards out, and if that doesn't work, hit the streets. If our vote doesn't count then it's time to end the illusion. Turn off the tube and clean your rifle.

47. I have turned off the tube.
I cant watch the lies.
I will make the news, if anything happens to my son.
I will make the news. It will be ugly. I wont take this lying down.
I will not let anything happen to him.
I will die first. My son will not die before me, thats my assurance, I did not give birth to my son so that he would die before me.
Thats not natural.
And if they dont discharge him on Nov 17, and they send him anywhere and something happens to him, remember my name.
I already have a grave. I will die honourably, and die for my son's memory if anything happens to him.
I am not kidding.
I have 2 other sons. They dont understand how committed I am to them, or their lives, but they have no kids.
I did NOT give birth to a child to lose him like this. and I wont let this go.
They will NOT hurt my son.
I wont allow it. They will be the sorriest sons of bitches on the planet if they try.

49. My God...
Hell, no...I'm not gonna Flame...and I'll take to task anyone who does!! You are right on the money here, Mom...and I'm sorry for your son. I wish they could ALL come home...

Maybe This will help give you some perspective...

"War Pigs" - Black Sabbath

Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction
Sorcerer of death's construction

In the feilds the bodies burning
As the war machine keeps turning
Death and hatred to makind
Poisoning their brainwashed minds...
Oh Lord Yeah...

....

Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that all to the poor, yeah

....

Now in darkness world stops turning
In the fields the bodies burning
No more warpigs have the power
And as God has struck the hour
Day of judgement God is calling
On their knees the warpigs crawling
Begging mercies for their sins
Satan laughing spreads his wings...Oh Lord Yeah

64. My prayers and thoughts are with you both
My son is a freshman in college and the thought of the draft scares the shit out of me. I pray that you can talk your son out of leaving with his unit, I pray that there is some place for him to go. This needs to get out there and I hope Will Pitts can help. Oprah should get a copy of your letter, the *'s AWOL needs to be brought up as a defense for our young men and women who don't deserve to be shipped off to an illegal war. These brave young men and women who fullfiled their duty that they signed up for and now they are being taken advantage of is deplorable. Not one more service man or woman should go until the *'s twins have a chance to serve their country.

You and your son will be in my thoughts. I wish I could offer more to ease your pain.

I keep wondering when more Americans will finally see how wrong this entire mess is and take to the streets weekly..daily..telling the govt to stop..enough is enough.

They are extending the NG for a year here. Those attached to us won't be coming home until this time next year...after already served their required year. It's wrong. Just wrong. The NG are being done dirty in more ways than regular troops.

Please keep "ranting"...you words speak the truth to the myth of this war on terror....

66. it's an old, old story

Ten million soldiers to the war have gone
Who may never return again;
Ten million mothers' hearts must break
For the ones who died in vain--
Head bowed down in sorrow, in her lonely years,
I heard a mother murmur thro' her tears:

Chorus
"I didn't raise my boy to be a soldier,
I brought him up to be my pride and joy.
Who dares to place a musket on his shoulder,
To shoot some other mother's darling boy?"
Let nations arbitrate their future trouble,
It's time to lay the sword and gun away.
There'd be no war today
If mothers all would say,
"I didn't raise my boy to be a soldier."

What victory can cheer a mother's heart,
When she looks at her blighted home?
What victory can bring her back
All she cares to call her own?
Let each mother's answer in the years to be,
"Remember that my boy belongs to me."
