Has the information you read on DU changed your opinion on death penalty?

With all of these threads and passionate arguments, I'm just wondering if it has had any effect.

"Why won't they shut up and start selling the programs and ice cream and off the n****r?"

My guess is, depressing though it may be, considering this is DU, you'd get a fair number of takers on that one.

I really didn't see that. Could you provide a few examples? Have they lied about the death penalty statistics? And, I'm not talking about Tookie, but arguments for and against the DP generally.

I would have liked to have seen an option stating; I am even further opposition to the death penalty.

Every time one of these comes up, it becomse more and more clear how fucked up and biased our criminal justice system is.

proles, I will say that DU was partially responsible for my change of opinion on the DP (more than a year ago now.) Sapphocrat played a major part in that change in me. She basically talked to me, gave me her opinions, but left it alone and wouldn't force the issue.

From there I used to read a lot of the DU threads on the DP I would stumble across. Every little bit of information and opinion I got from DUers helped me see things differently.

So let me take this time to thank Sapph and every anti DP member of DU. You all helped me to see the light. :)

For the record -- for anyone on DU who doesn't have a bead on you -- let me say this: Ain't NOBODY gonna coerce foreigncorrespondent into NO position, not NO-HOW. :)

The credit belongs solely to you. You're the one who changed your own mind. All I did was tell you why I believe what I believe. We all make the choice to listen or not, to anyone. And you, my dear, I salute for having the openmindedness to listen to EVERYONE, ALL the time. You may not always reach the same conclusion I do about every issue (although we hit it about 98% of the time; the other 2% we don't agree on, we really don't agree on, but here we are anyway, six years later), but that's not what matters. What matters is that you give everyone and everything a chance to make a case. And then you process it all and figure it out on your own.

You epitomize the Aussie ideal of "fair go." In the end, your conclusion about a specific issue may not be popular, but it is based on informed opinion. I can't pay you any higher compliment, as a human being, than that.

So... Nobody on earth knows better than I do that you make your own decisions solely independently of anyone or anything else. You are NO sheep.

And thank God/dess for that. I wouldn't want you any other way.

And what if you decided I was simply wrong about DP? OK by me -- because I would know you had taken in all the pros and cons, and nobody had influenced you... not even me.

as I am now. Each time this comes up, I explore new links and ideas, and it only has made me stronger in my stance. Also, it has provided me with an arsenal of facts and statistics that I can tap into for discussions.
