Skinner cleared it up! I was WRONG.
I am wrong, and so are A LOT of other DUers. Skinner has formally said in a thread (that he locked) that, DU was not intended to be home to any particular flavor of progressive

Well, I honestly learned something tonight. There are "flavors" of progressive thought? There is now a "moderate" progressive? Maybe now "conservative" progressives? That's called an oxymoron.

My thread didn't say that moderates - or anybody else - weren't welcome. That takes some stretching. I said they are more in abundance now and that they shouldn't always be talking about the "far left" as if we don't quite pass muster. I posted that with the (false) belief that DU was, in fact, a truly PROGRESSIVE site. Skinner cleared that up by welcoming progressives of all "flavors"...

I am learning some very interesting things here of late. More by what's not being allowed to be said. A "liberal" site is the LAST place you should see this kind of policing of thought. Which is EXACTLY what my post was about. I THOUGHT - as did many others I imagine - that "progressive" meant "progressive".......there's no "flavors" --- the term has a very SPECIFIC meaning in a political context. Unless, of course, it ruffles feathers.

7. Cherry Garcia. Wait.
Progressives aren't ice cream?

See, that's the trouble with a label. Turns out, the people who use it have all different definitions for it.

Maybe someone should define the term we use so loosely here. Maybe all of you should take a stab at defining it. Find out what the hell you've been talking about all this time.

Much love.

12. SEE?????
No, my friend, PROGRESSIVE actually means something. You can't "define" it any way you wish. Orwell's America has come to DU. NOTICE ALL THE Wesley Clark REPLIES? You people have attempted a coup of sorts by turning up, down and red, blue --- but, by God, you WILL NOT and CANNOT make a general who waged war on the Serbian people a PROGRESSIVE. You may try to hijack the term - even successfully here, apparently - but you will NEVER hijack the spirit!

8. Looks like we have 2 parties: Democrats and Progressives
I'm a Progressive and am proud of it. I'll disagree with Democrats, who'll likely disagree with me too.

I'm appreciative Skinner tolerates me.

Whatever the future holds is what is to happen.

And you're right on the oxymorons. That's why "Democrat" and "Progressive" segregation makes more sense. That way we all know who each other is!

Oh well, I'm off to watch Barbara Feldon in Laugh-In...

Edited on Sun Oct-19-03 08:24 PM by wyldwolf
IMO, he subscribes to few too many conspiracy theories.

He has harassed me via DU private message - demanding to know if Wesley Clark pays me to support him on DU. :eyes:

I have no sympathy for him.

Only symphony! :nopity:

25. Like moths to a flame or ...
Can't say it for it might be perceived as inflammatory or whatever and be unceremoniously locked or deleted, *GASP!* That's the problem with comedy, it's got to sink to the lowest common denominator or else some overly-sensitive politically correct person thinks it's the biggest insult of all time!

Sigh. It's human nature I suppose. Best to just sit back and watch humanity childishly destroy itself. It's sad, really, dung beetles are more civilized than humanity at times...

(this was a generalized statement, not directed to any one person.)

Did I miss a vote? Would have voted 'no,' so if someone could get that into the tally, I'd be appreciative.

22. Get off of it Will
For YOU to ask that question? The same William Pitt who willingly accepts the celebrity worship and "Mr. Pitt" crap -- dare suggest that I think I was elected "arbiter" of anything? You have made a CAREER out of doing that here, bub. You're not the only published author on this board! But, you ARE the only published author here who reminds everyone of it at all time. If there is any ONE SINGLE poster at DU who thinks he is "arbiter" -- it is you, "MR." Pitt.

It seems like there's a lot of hostility floating around right now. Did I miss something? Why so many flamewars? Why so much sniping at each other? Anybody got any thoughts?

26. I am locking this thread.
It is in clear violation of DU posting rules, namely:

29. That is just silly
There are no "flavors" of progressive thought? Where have you been hiding?

I have been in the movement for 25 years. I helped organize 10,000 to protest Ronbo Raygun's deployment of Pershing II missles to Germany in the 80's. I provided aid and transitional housing to the hundreds arrested doing civil disobedience there. Since then, I have protested Nixon, Raygun, Bush I, and now Bush II.

During these years of activism I have met anti-abortion progressives, pro-environment progressives, pro-choice progressives, lesbian seperatist progressives, anarchists, socialists, marxists, greens, anti-death penalty progressives, marijuana reform progressives, heterosexual feminist progressives, gay rights progressives....

I could go on and on. No two of them think quite alike on every issue. Like on the environment, some are social ecologists, some are deep ecologists, and others yet are animal rights activists. Some are vegans, some are vegetarians, some are ovi-lacto vegetarians, some are simply carnivores. The great thing is that each finds his or her place and is welcomed to participate.
