The Airwaves, They Are A-Changin'
Bob Dylan Signs With XM Satellite Radio to Host a Weekly Show

By Paul Farhi
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, December 14, 2005; Page A01

Bob Dylan -- singer, songwriter, former counterculture figure and voice of a generation -- has added another line to his rsum: radio DJ.

The enigmatic troubadour has signed on to host a weekly show on XM Satellite Radio, the D.C.-based pay-radio provider. Dylan will select the music, offer commentary, interview guests and answer e-mail from listeners during the one-hour program, which will start in March, XM said yesterday.

The deal is a coup not just for Washington-based XM, but for satellite radio in general.

Dylan's hiring is not just a coup for XM, which is in a fierce battle for new subscribers with Sirius Satellite Radio, but also another score for satellite radio over conventional broadcasting

1. For whatever this is worth...
...Imus claimed on his show this morning that stock for Sirius Radio has moved to "sell" status, and XM stock has moved to "buy."

It will be interesting to see the measure of Howard Stern's star power. In the "fierce battle," if stock is any indication, XM has the edge.

2. Dylan interviewing guests? That requires talking.
AND speaking clearly. I can just hear the questions. "So, what do you think about my latest CD?"
"What does it mean when you have a pain here?" "What does my cat sound like coughing up a hairball? Hack Hack, meeeeeeeeee-oooooooowwwww."

7. Depends on your prefrences
I have Sirius, and it is OK. I am a Howard Stern fan, so that is the main reason I chose Sirius and really the only reason I got satellite radio on the first place.

I have noticed that Stern is not very popular here, i suppose because people find him degrading to woman which to me is ridiculous, but to each his/her own. I have read here that XM has better progressive programming than Sirius does so if you want better left wing radio I think XM is the way to go. However, Sirius does have ONE progressive channel that features Stephanie Miller and Lynn Samuels both of whom I enjoy.

As far as music programming is concerned, I think they are about equal. I know from experience that Sirius has a lot of good musci channels and I know people that have XM that say that the musci is good there as well. I do have one gripe about the music at Siruis though, and I would imagine the same is true for XM. My gripe is that one of the supposed big attractions for satellite radio is that it had a wider variety of uncensored music than regular radio, but I have noticed that even satellite radio does the one thing that I hate about regular radio - They MOSTLY play only a select few songs from a band and don't give AS MUCH variety as I would like them too. With that said, you DEFINTELY are not going to hear some of the songs that they play on satellite on regular radio, I only wish they would play an even wider variety.

As far as price goes, it seems that XM has cheaper hardware, but I think the monthly fees are comparable.

All in all, I enjoy it and find it to be a worthwhile investment, especially if there is a specific program that you are looking for and spend a lot of time in your vehicle.

Hope that helps. Feel free to ask me any questions.
