Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) will vote against the updated Patriot Act and will join with senators who are seeking to block the bill from coming up for a vote, RAW STORY has learned.

Reid has told aides he will vote against cloture -- a Senate procedure which requires that 60 senators support a bill being brought before the Senate before it is brought to a final vote. In essence, voting against cloture means supporting a filibuster.

"Senator Reid has several concerns including the National Security letters, the library provision, and some of the habeas corpus aspects which have nothing to do with terrorism," an aide told RAW STORY.

Sen Russ Feingold (D-WI) has previously said he will filibuster the revised version of the act. In voting against cloture, Reid will be supporting Sen. Feingold's efforts.

Reid may be pro-life (he has a dismal NARAL rating) but damnit, he's my guy for majority leader. I'll vote for a DLCer knowing that ultimately I'll help get Harry Reid the majority leadership. He's earned it!

And what's important is whether he'll uphold Roe V Wade if it ever came to that. In my personal life I'm pro-life (and more than just like the fundies) but I am pro-choice.

Republicans who oppose the bill are doing so on libertarian grounds, saying the government should respect Americans' right to privacy. Among Republicans opposing the revised version of the bill are Sens. Larry Craig (R-ID), Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE), Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Sen. John Sununu (R-NH).

True (paleo) Conservatives distrust government power and detest the Patriot act. It's only the sheeple of the Republican party who want the government to have power.

With every show of strength, Dems will gain points, especially among white males.

It doesn't even matter what the issue is. As Clinton says, Americans tend to go for "Strong and Wrong" over "Weak and Right."

Could the Dems finally be getting it?

This will be interesting if it happens. Frist is threatening the nuclear option re: Alito, but I think he only means to apply that to judicial appointments. I wonder if he'll try it for the Patriot Act.

PATRIOT ACT UPDATE

Yesterday there was a press conference opposing the Patriot Act reauthorization bill headlining Bob Barr and the ACLU, an impromptu debate between Senator Specter and me, and announcements from Senators Reid and Leahy that they will oppose cloture. Today, the Senate may formally take up the conference report. Sen. Frist announced on the floor this morning that he will seek a time agreement to limit debate on the Patriot Act in the Senate. I will object to that. Extended debate on this reauthorization bill is needed.


I plan to speak on the floor at length at some point today. I will try to give you a heads up on the timing of that speech.

This morning, the SAFE Act cosponsors released a "Dear Colleague" letter, laying out our objections to the conference report and pledging to vote against cloture. You'll see some new names on this letter - including Republican Senator Chuck Hagel.

Attorney General Gonzales has a Patriot Act op-ed in today's Washington Post. As you can see, it's filled with more of the same misleading rhetoric that the administration and the leadership in the House have been pushing in recent weeks. It fails to discuss the responsible, compromise bill that passed the Senate without a single objection earlier this year. And, rather than talk about the controversial, intrusive provisions of the Patriot Act, it focuses on the provisions that everyone supports.

Please continue to contact your Senators to urge them to oppose cloture and insist that a Patriot Act reauthorization bill include the modest but crucial reforms that we have recommended and keep sharing your thoughts with me here.
