13. Because there are provisions that are necessary in the Patriot Act
Even Feingold agrees with that. They want the language to be improved.

12. The SAFE Act
There is a better bill, the Senate already passed it. This is the one we should have been supporting all along. It protects due process and privacy rights, but keeps the invesitgative provisions that Democrats had been fighting for since OK City.

10. I told you guys
I told you that even Feingold said he supports 90% of the Patriot Act and that he also supports a new version that retains alot of what was already in it. You cannot just kneejerk against everything because it's on somebody's political agenda. Even the ACLU supports the Senate version. Most of the Patriot Act isn't going away, only the due process and privacy violations, which many of us have been trying to get past the noise for years now.

Reid's statement should not be surprising to whoever actually listened to Feingold these last few days. He said as much.

11. Much of it is needed
It is just those controversial segments that go over the top. The rest bring many laws into the current technology age.

Kucinich has been trying to push a bill through that removed just those civil liberty restricing parts.

They always play it safe. But just in case we are attacked by a terrorist between now and when the Psatriot Act is renewed, the Democrats cannot be said to be weak on terrorism.

17. Did any of you even listen to what Feingold said today.
They dont want the Patriot Act to expire. They want it renewed with modifications. They called these modifications the SAFE Act and that is what was voted unanimously in the Senate earlier this year.

The Conference report rejected that and came back with a very different version, which is why they decided to filibuster it.

They want to keep the old version for 3 months so that they can try to find an agreement with the Senate.

Is it just too hard to understand for you.

20. No, I'm not an idiot!
I understand that they want to keep some of it, but the parts that take away our civil rights (imho) trump the parts they want to keep.

I would rather the whole damn thing expire, they can start over.

treating Feingold as a God, and tonight, people are upset at Reid and Leahy to say exactly the same thing.

Here is Feingold's last statement on tmpCafe

PATRIOT UPDATE

By Russ Feingold

We've just had a tremendous bipartisan victory on the Senate floor. We were able to hold off a cloture motion that would have put a time limit on debate, and for all practical purposes would have led to the eventual enactment of a deeply flawed reauthorization of the PATRIOT Act without the reforms we need. (Here is a statement I gave just prior to that vote.) There is no doubt that the reaction from citizens like you on this issue helped convince a number of Members to vote with us.

The Administration has argued that opposing the conference report would put the American people at risk. Yet, according to Senator Frist and Senator Specter, the President would rather let the law expire than support the unanimously passed Senate-passed bill or a short extension to let negotiations continue. I can't imagine anything more irresponsible than compromising the safety of the American people to score political points.

And actually, Reid and Feingold are playing very nicely here. They put the blame and the irresponsibility on Bush and Frist if they dont vote the extension. Good play.

28. He's causing Frist a stomach meltdown.
Because Frist said it had to be his way or no way. Well, explain that to your elephanttitos Fristy when you refuse to vote for the same patriot act that has been in existence since September of --when was it, oh yeah...September 11th.

But don't worry, you'll have plenty of time to read the constitution again shortly. From your jail cell.
