I can hardly wait for the next polls to come out. It's gonna be ugly. His little one-point bump will quickly fade into history and free-fall will resume.

37. Yes, It's Time to Impeach
I'm sick of what that shithead has done to my country.
Get rid of him! He uses the War on Terror as an excuse to give himself more power. I want a leader who will concentrate on the *real* terrorists & not the people in the other party. Bush has forgotten what he is really supposed to do. He is not protecting the American people when he is acting like a power-mad dictator.

Edited on Sat Dec-17-05 10:53 AM by Toots
All those who voted on the morals issue are quite tainted when it comes to morality. In fact this entire country is morally bankrupt. The first indicater is the Death Penalty. We are the only westernized nation that has not abandoned such barbaric behavior..The world will not mourn at the passing of the US of A....

14. Everyone clearly misunderstands

Bush is operating in his capacity as Commander in Chief.

He declared war on the rightfully elected government of the US in November 2000 and took illegal possession in January 2001 and tried to dismantle the laws and institutions by fiat starrting immediately.

Edited on Sat Dec-17-05 10:59 AM by Wordie
They threated our civil rights and remove the checks and balances that we rely on in our government and our American culture. There always needs to be some sort of oversight. Feingold and all the many other Senators who managed to accomplish the rejection of cloture on this bill deserve a huge thanks from all of us.

20. The reason for the conspiraciy stories about 9/11...
Everything became so convenient for them. The neocons can explain away any breach of our civil rights with "The world changed on 9/11". The can also say, with a straight face, that they're upholding the consitution in "a time of war".

Feingold

Earlier on CNN:

"We have a president, not a king, and that's the way he's talking," Feingold said in an interview with CNN. "What he's doing, I believe, is illegal. And it's really quite a shocking moment in the history of our country."

22. the best thing about this is
they know that he's using this as a weapon against them, he is spying on them, he trusts
no one, remember how long it's been since the original Abu Ghraib pictures were released, they did nothing, now that they see that it impacts them, they will ACT.

EDIT: Grammar

Amendment IV

Edited on Sat Dec-17-05 12:24 PM by undeterred
He is impassioned, but always cool and rational. Anyone who respects the constitution and the laws of this country will have to respect his arguments. He never makes it personal, and he's not into power.

He's the kind of man that makes you love lawyers. I hope he's our next president.

31. Link to a synopsis of the actual laws ....

http://wampum.wabanaki.net/vault/2005/12/002161.html

<snip> " For anyone interested the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act is here.

Violations of the law carry criminal penalties and civil liability. The criminal sanctions are as follows:

(a) Prohibited activities

A person is guilty of an offense if he intentionally---

(1) engages in electronic surveillance under color of law except as authorized by statute; or

(2) discloses or uses information obtained under color of law by electronic surveillance, knowing or having reason to know that the information was obtained through electronic surveillance not authorized by statute.

(b) Defense

It is a defense to a prosecution under subsection (a) of this section that the defendant was a law enforcement or investigative officer engaged in the course of his official duties and the electronic surveillance was authorized by and conducted pursuant to a search warrant or court order of a court of competent jurisdiction.

(c) Penalties

An offense described in this section is punishable by a fine of not more than $10,000 or imprisonment for not more than five years, or both.

The potential civil liability is as follows:

An aggrieved person, other than a foreign power or an agent of a foreign power, as defined in section 1801 (a) or (b)(1)(A) of this title, respectively, who has been subjected to an electronic surveillance or about whom information obtained by electronic surveillance of such person has been disclosed or used in violation of section 1809 of this title shall have a cause of action against any person who committed such violation and shall be entitled to recover--

(a) actual damages, but not less than liquidated damages of $1,000 or $100 per day for each day of violation, whichever is greater;

(b) punitive damages; and

(c) reasonable attorney's fees and other investigation and litigation costs reasonably incurred." </snip>

It seems pretty clear that Bush broke the law here - these authorizations were not 'by statute'.

NYT has sat on this for a year? Then I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that this was well known and part of innoculating the population against its eventual revelation was to throw out a bunch of chaff like this Christmas war crap to distract and detract.
