10. Worst. Year. Ever.
Dad diagnosed with bronchoalveolar carcinoma. Mom almost died from diverticulitis and had to have bowel resection surgery. Grandmother's house and all her possesions blown away by Katrina. She used to be such a happy vivacious person but now bawls all the time. At least she gets to live in a proper home, but is still buying clothes to replace everything she lost. State Farm denied her claim for house contents, she's signing up for the class action lawsuit. Not a good year at all.

I mean, things really shoulld be worse, given what happened in 2004. But consider that Dean is the DNC chairman; Reid and Pelosi have come out swinging; Bush's Social Insecurity plan has been foiled (for now); justice is being carried out on Libby and DeLay; and Bush is down to below 40%.

Things have been bad (obviously), but I'm cautiously optimistic.

14. My best year
Despite the darkening zeitgeist, this year's been a watershed year for me. Personally, professionally and creatively its been a year of fulfillment and opening to new horizons -- though my heart breaks sometimes at all the calamity. Making peace with the suffering and living with the truth there's almost nothing I can do about it all, except to make peace with my small share of it. If I were to describe a theme of this year for me, I'd say it's been "The Year of Being Human".

:hi: Happy Holidays fellow DUers, and may this coming year bring joy to you and yours.

15. Trauma.
And of course, most of what was posted in the poll. Hope--sometimes of a desperate nature. Disgust--well, before Katrina, yeah, it was only disgust. Happiness--of a fleeting variety. Oh, wait, here's another one: For me, it has also been a year of gratitude. For all of the allies on our side, for the people who remain my friends, for the perverse kind of luck I have had, despite all of the unluckiness I have also fallen victim to.

16. Considering I met the love of my life and will be getting
married in three weeks - I had to go with happiness.

However, in the political world - I'd go for disgust.
