It's Propoganda Day on The HIstory Channel
Right now they're running "Saddam and the Third Reich". In the cable description it reads "A profile of Saddam Hussein draws parallels between the former dictator's reign of terror and the tactics and ideology of Hitler's Third Reich". First it was propoganda about Iran and now this. This is going a little overboard. Now if it was followed up by "Bush and the Third Reich" with the same description I'd be the first to tune in!

2. I'm lucky not to have cable
but I remember being shocked and appalled 2 years ago while I was taking care of my dying mother that the History Channel had morphed into The War Channel.

Between the endless warfare on that channel and the endless silly motorcycles on Discovery, the dumbing down of cable has been completed.

And now you get the same damn commercials you do on broadcast TV. Such a deal!

3. I mourn for Discovery and The Learning Channel.
I still watch The History Channel, as it usually airs something of historical relevance, but Discovery and TLC just air lame reality shows. The only show worth a spit on either one is Mythbusters, because you can at least walk away from it feeling like you learned something.

I do wish The History Channel would stop their war fascination, even though I do find the ins and outs of WWII to be intriguing, and get back to showing documentaries on the ancient world.

9. And the Travel Channel is nothing more than a huge
advertisement for Las Vegas. I so looked forward to this channel when it first aired because I love to travel, but it turned out to be a dud.

13. And Discovery Civilizations
I took the History channel off of my TiVo 'favorites' list shortly after the Iraq war started. It's a crime what's been done to what used to be fascinating watching.

17. Yes, learning the history and mistakes of the Roman empire would be of
great importance now. The only difference between the Roman empire and us is that they ruled the world for 1000 years, we are strugling to make it to 250

25. Agreed. They should merge and form the Home Improvement Network.
Because that is all they show on those stations now....

I remember when they actually used to have science shows on those channels.

4. If I weren't so sensible, I'd think it was a plot to kill PBS...
In the 90s, the programming on TLC, The History Channel and Discovery was excellent. Educational viewers left PBS and watched the cable channels. Now, my local PBS is now full of 50s Do Wop and other unwatchable crap aimed at their remaining viewers. Meanwhile, the cable channels turned into propaganda/UFO/Motorcycle/Bible Code crap.

To quote Pink Floyd, "I got 13 channels of shit on the TV to choose from."

16. Well, thank fundraising for that hour and a half devoted to
Ricky Nelson. I have no clue why they tie absolute crap to their fundraising; doing their fundraising while they air their regular programming might be much more effective.

(I did learn something from the 5 minutes of Ricky that I tolerated. I knew something had always bothered me about him when I was a kid, and now I know what it was: his eyes were dead)

6. Who owns The History Channel, anyway?
Do you think it will morph into something else as more of our WWII Vets join their fathers?

11. Whoever owns it, they are truly telling HIS story--not the truth.
I've seen it lately and it's scary what passes as "history" according to them. Even more scary are the generations growing up on this carp. They will actually believe it's true.

19. The "Hitler Channel" is owned by Disney, Hearst and GE...
Per the Columbia Journalism Review at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism
http://www.cjr.org/tools/owners/disney.asp

And that should explain why it's so damned right wing. :grr:

I like history, but can't stand watching that channel. It's just one glorifying war documentary after another...

18. Agreed - now the NYT is on TV with the "Discovery Times" channel,
Edited on Sun Dec-18-05 06:03 PM by gulfcoastliberal
"The Military Channel" and I believe there is even a "Pentagon Channel". The History Channel is a total propaganda tool glorifying the Iraq war, while glossing over the dead civilians, etc. The NYT channel even has a show called "Off to War" glorifying the Iraq conflict by showing these poor kids from some small town who were in the Nattional Guard get shipped off to Baghdad and all their excellent adventures in country. I remember catching a snippet with the producers/directos and they basically said they did not wish to show the "bad" side of the war.

The New York Fucking Times channel! It galls me!

The National Geographic channel is OK. History International is now where it's at, but it's not part of my package. Heh heh I said package. :eyes:

21. History Channel...Part Of The GE Empire...
http://www.cjr.org/tools/owners/disney.asp

Listed under Disney...who is part owner...here are the others

The History Channel (with Hearst and GE)

I avoid the History Channel during Primetime...History Channel International is a lot better and not loaded with all the propaganda. The one that I can't stand is the drill sargent from Full Metal Jacket...I sure wish Gomer Pyle would come back and put him out of our misery.

Cheers...

22. But Saddam and Hitler have a lot in common...
they were both bankrolled by the Bush family, for one. And US companies sold them war material and didn't care who got killed.
