That the poor credit cards are having a hard time of it lately. It seems that far more citizens were lately educated about the legislation taking effect this fall. Bankruptcies are at a record level, and their profits are down.

Weren't we talking about this last year, and didn't we decide to spread the word far and wide? I seem to remember something about that...

9. A brief summary:
Despite an earlier written guarantee, the House Republicans have inserted 45 pages of language into the Defense Appropriations Bill (which really needs to passed) protecting the pharmaceutical industry (because of bird flu). And, despite giving reassurances to Dennis Kucinich - in response to a direct question on the floor of the House - that ANWR had been removed from the bill, ANWR is still in the bill.

If this passes the House it will be up to the Senate to reject it, which will be difficult because it is a must-pass bill. This has NEVER been done before with the DAB.

the Senate will have to:
A) Pass it over their own objections
B) Reject it and have to start all over again with the defense appropriation, which would be a disaster.

The bill, HR 3893, passed 212-210. They held the vote open 40 minutes until the Republican "Leadership" could twist enough arms in the cloakroom.

57. They are compelled
by their boards to deliver maximum ratings, and thus shareholder value. Maximum shareholder value means highest ratings. Now you and I know that impeachment trials get good ratings, but the news editors and press owners are conveniently, and legally required to seek the highest per hour ad revenue for programming.

News operates on the same exact dynamic. Yes they are responsible, but they are operating as the system was designed, and we have the loss of the "fairness doctrine" for much of the state of news.

100. If It Were All About Ratings, They Would Play Up Republican Scandals
Edited on Mon Dec-19-05 03:04 AM by AndyTiedye
There have been so many of them, each would have been worse than Watergate
if the media had given it any airtime.

Lying about WMDs, and starting a war based on those lies.
Billions of no-bid contracts to Halliburton, even though Halliburton shamefully bungles the work it is contracted to do.
Breaking into the Democrats' computer system.
Disenfranchisement of thousands of voters. Loss and theft of thousands of votes beyond those.
And now, spying on us all in a direct violation of the law, directly ordered by the pResident.

Surely there are enough scandals in the administration to keep every muckraker in the country working overtime,
and keep us riveted to our sets watching news of them unfold.

Instead, they sit on the real stories, and give us a front page that resembles the cover of "People" magazine instead.
WHY

The news isn't about ratings and advertising time. If it were, they wouldn't have it at all.
It is about power. The power that comes from owning the news.

Freedom of the press belongs to the man who owns one. (A.J.Liebling)

Typing up Dem's statements prevented me from clarifying that point.

I totally agree with your point about it being better ratings to discuss the actual news.
I agree that the rules of the corporation give the owners the cover they need to justify the lockout of important stories, such as congress passing Defense authorization at 2am.

They use the market to justify the manipulation of the news.

And you are right, its the power and the perks that come with that accumulated power, in pwning the news.

It's called the Deficit reduction act, but the bill increases the deficit by billions.

Self interest run-amok. ...

Reminding everyone of the house ethics committee's opening moves this year (trying to dump the filibuster?)

i dont know how much more unfair you could get than that.

"they are gonna provide cuts for the poor : prenatal care, disabled child education, local school districts, leave no child behind funding gone, tutors gone, seniors utility bills programs cut.

and to be fair they are gonna also give cuts to he wealthy,

Makes Scrooge look like a philanthropist.

I challenge the members of the republican party to show me one major religion in the world that says to take the most from those with the least, and nothing from those who have the most."

What the american people are seeing, is the rhetoric of the republicans, these bills are neither compassionatenor conservative. ....

Strong on national defense? 8 1/2 billion dollars cut from the defence bill.

Wrong now, wrong any time of the day.

The first of the year is going to bring a depression and a world that the people that now inhabit our country, for the most part, will not be able to understand or deal with. It is almost time to pay the piper.. and as it gets closer things get more and more insane.

lot of euphemisms on the other side.

just the cuts in the rate of growth are neutral

7 billion 70% of the cuts fall on the backs of students and their parents. The cuts increase the cost of education is outstripping the ability of middle income families to (pay)....

so the republican idea is to make college more expensive.. when we need more college educated people for the economy.. yes dems have a better alternative to make it cheaper.

medicaid: they are reducing the cost of increase.. how ? by increasing premiums and copayments.
If its not bad enough, they are gonna cut hearing aids, eyeglasses,
and if TINY TIM WAS HERE, THEY'd TAKE AWAY HIS CRUTCHES!!

"You can talk about slowing the growth, but the growth in the costs to parents, and patients increases."
maybe that doesnt sound like a tax increase to you, but it's a cost increase.

What we have here is one cruel, one inhumane, one insensitive budget from the Republican Party.

130. Yes. Wikimedia
Governments can err, presidents do make mistakes, but the immortal Dante tells us that Divine justice weighs the sins of the cold-blooded and the sins of the warm-hearted on different scales. Better the occasional faults of a government that lives in a spirit of charity than the consistent omissions of a government frozen in the ice of its own indifference.

As they trickle, and their yachts rise up, a few lucky folks will get to wash the decks of the yacht.

10x as much as is being cut.

Republican party since the days of reagan have lived by the motto of mrs thatcher.

no society, just individuals.

That is contrary to Isaiah, the prophet is categorizing what is going on in Jerusalem and why it is failing, as the wealth accumulated.

Isaiah 1:23 Everyone loves a bride and runs after gifts, they do not defend the fatherless. The widows cause does not come before them.

Nobody knows whats in this budget, except 6 people who wrote it. NAMES I WANT NAMES?? frist....

He brings out a lump of coal.

You have the nerve to cut child support, food stamps, medicaid, and then you say to people merry christmas and happy new year. That takes the height of gaul or no feeling whatsoever.

There is no way you could talk about those issues if you knew what these people were going through.
We all make 150k per year at a minimum.

We are making it difficult for them to make a living because of our own greed and materialism.
