Is there a complete list of Patriot Act abuses since 9/11 somewhere?
I figure the domestic spying is only the tip of the iceberg. Them spying on Quakers could easily be tied to that peace group Michael Moore featured in F9/11 and beyond that could be tied to the Justice Department demanding records of people who had abortions.
As a whole thier argument continues to be that we were just spying on suspected terrorists but these people are clearly regular Americans and we can make a serious case that Bush decided to sick the CIA on his political enemies.
1. Patriot Act searches are secret. There is no way of knowing.
Subpoenas are secret and the targets are unaware of them. Persons and institutions served with them are forbidden to discuss them. The law itself is classified. Civil liberties groups need special clearance from the courts to even challenge the specifics of the law.
Aside from the odd protest from from a librarian or two, everything happens in secret. The target can only guess that his home has been searched.
You may be a victim without ever knowing it. That is one of the biggest problems with the Patriot Act.
3. It's Safe to Assume We Are All Under Surveillance
Peace activists and progressives are the real targets of the Patriot Act. Terror suspects were already under surveillance; but the FBI is too inept to do anything about them. They feel more comfortable harassing war protesters.
