What's wrong with sacrificing some of our rights in a time of war?
Edited on Mon Dec-19-05 10:44 AM by info being
We live in a time where suspected terrorists, US Citizens or not, can be snatched up and taken to torture camps around the world without even being charged, without due process, without any assurance of basic human rights. One might interject, "But we're talking about terrorists, who cares? We have to do whatever it takes to protect our country."

To those who fail to see the deep and fundamental problem with this state of things, please imagine the following scenario:

A personal enemy of yours sends an incriminating postcard under your forged name and with your return address to a suspected terrorist organization. Imagine our government is working as it claims it should, and a deligent federal employee discovers this post card. Imagine that agents break into your home, kidnap you, and transport you in secret to Guantanimo Bay for daily interrogation and torture. Imagine you have nothing to confess because you're innocent and know nothing about what has been done to you. Imagine they keep you for years, breaking you and taking your will to live, as your loved ones are left to speculate and grieve. Imagine.

This is a very plausible scenario in the America of 2005. Think about how fragile your life is...how easily it can all be destroyed. EVERY HUMAN BEING deserves due process under law.

We all know, at some level, that this has happened and is happening at this moment...to somebody else, yes...but how long before it is you?

This is the way of the Communist USSR, Nazi Germany, and the Mafia. People who support this state of things are your personal enemy.
