Camp Wellstone is a weekend-long training program that provides hands-on, practical training in grassroots politics to citizen activists, campaign workers, and people interested in running for office.
The people in attendance are progressives, not necessarily democrats, and range from those with a lot of activist experience to none at all. I have heard that something like 30 graduates of the "running for office" track have been elected to office!
I went to a training last winter on the "activist" track and would like to attend the "campaign worker" track this year. It was an inspiring, information packed weekend, with loads of practical information.
Its a bargain: The regular Camp Wellstone is $75 for a 3 day weekend with a couple of meals included, and the Campus Camp Wellstone is only $35.
This year they are focusing on eight targeted states: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Arizona, Washington, and North Carolina. They will conduct 2-4 Camp Wellstones in each state between January and mid-September, and they will conduct 1-6 Campus Camp Wellstones in each target state.
The first training of the year has been announced, and its in Minnesota:
